AMMO REVIEW: 9mm Federal PUNCH JHP

UPDATED July 24: Using meat for this was my last option for test material but I was curious. During the weeks of putting this together I was thinking that meat would be the focus moving forward. The format has benefits, but my preference is to run with something more standard and useful for comparing gel results. I've reached out to Corbin's for SIMTEST but that product is out of stock indefinitely. What's next? Over the next few weeks I'm going to experiment with building my own 10% ordnance blocks using Knox powder. I can only setup one at a time because keeping actual food in the frig is important. Also, I'm likely returning to four layers of denim as the cover, which is the IWBA protocol. This suggestion was from several people in the LEO community as it's a more challenging format. This is a work in progress and the protocols are more stringent than anything I have attempted......very much a challenge. The 9mm PUNCH will probably be retested in 10% gel, but I don't have a timeline. This is still a ton of work so please be realistic with regard to my cost and time allocations for this hobby outlet. There have been dozens of requests in the first week of this video being active and fulfilling even a fraction of those is not possible.

Tn, I'm so glad you're back and I understand that this is a hobby but your data is so spot on. To echo Ian, I understand the meat is not as consistent as gel it appears to fully represent how these rounds would probably act in a IRL shooting. The gel just seems so artificial whereas the meat puts in my mind a real world application.

in my experience, these appear better than HST's...about half the HST's i test clogged with denim and barely expanded ..been using using Hornady Critical Duty or Critical Defense, both polymer tipped bullets; never a problem it's nice to have good options..as long as they run in your gun; use them

I had a box of Federal HST 124gr +P 9mm for security details. 👮🏻‍♂️ . I also packed Winchester Defender 124gr +P bonded & in early 2021 Ready Defense 124gr +P. I got 1 50rd box of the hard hitter, fast 127gr +P+ Ranger T, T series 9mm but I rarely carry it. I like the design of the Ready Defense but by engineer specs, profile it's not as strong as the 🚔 Ranger One line.

I have missed your reviews and this is a most excellent one! I, too, prefer "over-engineered" designs and still have quite a selection from my LEO days. That said, the average citizen really doesn't "need" ammo that meets the FBI's protocol as their shootings tend to be face-to-face and not involve cover (the same cover that might keep their neighbors from getting perforated ... maybe). Shooting meat, IMHO, is great and even the burliest Body By Club Fed bad guy won't have muscles THAT thick. Now, as it was explained to me in a long-ago ballistics class, the first 4" of gel is simulating getting through our much more elastic skin, BUT I think with all that cloth (more than we're going to have here on the coast) and the plastic cover, we're looking at some good skin simulant, too. In any case, while this would not be my main choice for duty, I think I'd be perfectly comfortable with it for carry these days. Great work, as always, sir!

Gelatin is more consistent obviously though the actual human body is not consistent and also contains bones. If you average with a big enough sample size, you will get great data I think. Or with gelatin and a substitute for bones but I think meat will be a good way to do it.
