Exploring the question as to whether carrying a firearm with a loaded chamber is right for YOU!
_________________________________________________
Welcome to the "Hickok45 Talks" Channel. This channel is a place for me to just pontificate about random topics that somebody out there might find interesting. I will talk about firearms issues quite a lot, but I'll also exercise my license to talk about any topic I might pretend to know something about.
If you have a topic you'd like me to address, let me know. Doesn't mean I'll address it, but who knows, I might.
Thanks for your support, and I hope you'll subscribe to all three of our channels and keep up with all the brilliance here!!! :-)
/ @hickok45 - Our main channel.
/ @hickok45clips - Our channel where John pulls clips from our existing library of videos.
/ @hickok45talks - This channel where all material is new material where I talk about one specific topic in each relatively short video. Hope you enjoy.

I retired in 2016 after 27+ years in law enforcement. It was never a topic of discussion when I went through the Academy. You always would have a round chambered. I agree, why carry a pistol if you’re carrying it without a chambered round? To me this isn’t a topic of discussion. Any people who do it are stupid. I couldn’t imagine being in a split second life or death situation and you pull out your gun and have to chamber around. FYI, I was in the first Academy class with the 9 mm having transitioned from 38 revolvers.

The operative word here is "training". Either way, your effective response to a threat depends on how proficiently confident you are adding a lethal weapon into the conflict. I personally carry without one in the chamber. I have conditioned myself through training to rack, retrieve, and if necessary, fire in one motion. I have been licensed to carry for well over twenty-five years. I have also had to draw both my striker and hammer fired pistols in actual situations where a potential threat existed. When a round is carried chambered, that usually means the next event is the firing of the weapon. Whether intentional or not, once that occurs, there is no turning back. Odds are less likely you will find yourself in a situation where you have absolutely zero chance to charge your weapon to protect yourself from hurt, harm, or danger. Conversely, the likelihood of a shot gone bad from a rushed engagement carries a higher probability. For me, I want to be sure and in complete control (most importantly my wits included) when my gun goes off. The Rambo/Terminator/S.W.A.T/Sp.Ops. wannabes of the KZbin gun world might disagree, but to each their own.

I am retired 30 year US Army. The 1911a1 was the firearm I was issued the most. I was taught to carry it in condition one; cocked, locked, and one in the chamber. If you have to use a firearm seconds matter. I am now a civilian and I carry a Sig Sauer 938 that reminds me of the 1911a1. I carry it in condition one. I do not recommend this to a novice, but it works for me!

Before I left the house to do a little shopping yesterday, I took a moment to make sure there was a round in the chamber of my daily carry, that the magazine and the two spares I always carry were also full....That took all of roughly two minutes at most....I'm looking at that pistol as I type, and I KNOW there is a round up the tube because I did NOT clear it after I got home. But I will still check it before I go out again in the morning....Just to be sure.

Appreciate the almost uniformly civil dialogue on what is a passionate topic. One point I will add is don’t forget there are a lot of relatively new handgun owners, and carrying one (along with your training and confidence level) is not static; it’s a journey. Let’s not intimidate people into not carrying at all by preaching that the only answer is a loaded chamber combined with some idealistic level of “training”. In the real world, abilities, budgets, and confidence levels vary. I carry with one chambered today, but I admit I didn’t start that way. And I have taken several concealed carry courses and regularly practice drawing and reholstering, both live and dry. And, I insist on a thumb safety for my strikers, unless I carry a DA/SA. That may not be ideal, but it worked for me.

Hickok, I saw your video introducing this channel this morning where your son said this had become your livelihood. Have you ever thought about starting a Hickok 45 shooting range ? With 7.7 million viewers, it might work. You could set up four or five shooting areas that duplicate your range. You could also put several paper target pistol ranges. People could rent and shoot some of your guns. Maybe you could build a little stage with wooden benches, and show up for a one hour relaxed discussion a few times a week? Nashville is already a vacation destination, I would come up to shoot at Hickok 45’s “range”. It would be fun to have a few tries at the gong or buy and shoot a few $5 2 liter bottles. Maybe spend $5 a round to shoot a Henry or some unusual historic rifle. In the big city, all we get is paper to shoot at. It’s something that might give you and John and income for several years.

Watched an Israeli army video about carrying chambered vs unchambered. New recruits carry unchambered and commandos don't. However their training involves drawing from the holster and chambering in one smooth motion so you are ready to shoot as the gun comes on target. The Air Force did not teach me this technique back in the 90's. Thanks for the thoughtful presentation.

My wife carries 2 M&P 40 cal. at all times. 1 in purse and other in cancan belt. 1 has safety the other doesn't. This is confusing to her so she opted for carrying chamber empty in both. We went to shoot last week (long overdue) and the gun she carries on person wouldn't cycle. Bang then hang up etc.. Apparently I picked up a 9mm mag and loaded it with .40cal. That doesn't work! Just a reminder to check your gear and become familiar with it. I am guilty of not doing this and it could have been a very bad situation if she needed it to function properly. Huge fan of Hickock and Son for many years, please keep your videos coming!

My take is that, if you find yourself with ony one hand at your disposal, you already failed at two stages. 1.- your situational awarness, 2.- Your threat assessment. Thefore, you have cut your chances of survival by as much as half. I choose to carry empty for my own personal reasons, but I make sure that stage 1 and 2 are covered so I can give myself ample time to load one when needed.

I don’t remember this being a big deal when most people carried either revolvers or automatics with frame or slide mounted safeties. Since all the popular carry guns now are striker fired with no safety and light triggers… it’s understandable some people don’t want to carry them with one in the chamber. The answer isn’t just train more or don’t be a wimp. The answer might be get a different gun. I’ve never heard of anyone afraid of carrying a loaded revolver. Even Barney Fife would have carried a loaded revolver if Andy had let him.

Sage advice from respected old timer. Every where you look, read, listen these days people are talking about the need to be armed. Consider that as Hickock said, the odds are you will never need the gun. Now that will invite howls of protest but keep thinking about these following criteria. In the past several years gun ownership and the attitude of needing to be armed has skyrocketed. That means a lot of newbies and for my way of thinking I would personally expect that a large measure of them are NOT competent with handling a gun much less are they adequately prepared to stage a self defense shooting in public with the problem of collateral damage. And a lot of the wanna be armed titans have no clue how they will react psychologically in determining a threat, deciding to use the gun, assessing the conditions of the shooting field and the very real thought of deciding to kill another person. I am 75, I am of the opinion that to carry and use a gun in self defense is purely a risky roll of the dice, likely as not you will screw up, the authorities will prosecute you and or your attacker will remain to be a threat to you for ever more. The very best you can do for yourself is to be vigilant, a constant state of situational awareness and seeking to steer clear of trouble whether out in public or at home.

I always carry with one in the chamber with my pocket pistol, but as soon as it's loaded, it goes into the holster and stays there unless I need it or am unloading it. I also like to use a good heavy double action trigger for my pocket pistol for the extra safety. However my full size 9mm that I keep for home defense, I usually just have the magazine loaded. I feel like if someone's trying to break into my home, I'll have time to rack the gun when I grab it, but out on the street, that's a totally different matter. But I agree that people have to make their own choice. Sometimes with a new gun, I carry it with an empty chamber until I've shot it at the range and feel confident with the gun.

If you are thinking you are that fast and capable to draw, ratchet in a round, relocate your hands into position, acquire a sight picture and perform a properly squeezed shot with all the momentary considerations that one has to factor in when you fire then you are not figuring in your opponents state of readiness. By having one in the chamber you have just cut your response time and action by at least 20%. In other words there's a good chance you never got to clear the holster and if so not got in that all most always most important shot, the 1st one. So be sure and have some ID on you besides in your wallet so the LEO/EMS can notify your next of kin.

Potentially lethal confrontations are time compression events. You never hear of bad guys racking a round “after”they have initiated the commission of a crime. They know racking a round could cost them their lives. It may appear racking a round doesn’t take much time, but against a round already in a bad guys gun ,you have been robbed of racking your gun in a time compression event. They have the advantage. Do not help them out! This refers to those packing semi autos. Revolvers are a different story. Empty chambers in PC’s are tombstones waiting for inscriptions.

Should you carry with it chambered, hummm, the bad guy is 20 ft away rushing you with a knife , do you have time to take your weapon out , rack it and squeeze one off to the targeted area ! 🤔 , , today one of my main concerns is the people that conceal carry are knowledgeable enough on when is it time to make the decision to use the weapon ,

For me, the bigger question is, the decision time needed to decide you have to shoot another human. How many of us are confident that you will make 100% the right reaction? 100% of the time? This is what worries me with carrying a firearm. I just don't trust anyone that they are competent with their choices. Obviously, a threat of being killed by another and reacting within your legal right would be one thing, but what if its undetermined if your life really is in danger? I often wonder what line has to be crossed before you decide to react with such deadly force. That has to weigh heavily on one self when you carry. If it didn't, this is what makes me nervous about "other folks" reaction time and that they don't end up panicking and taking out someone that turns out wasn't a deadly threat. Good talk on this would be intresting to see the different sides on this important issue.

You use a firearm to protect life, not that complicated really when you think about it, especially in the moment I would think! There are bad people in this world trying to hurt and even kill us. I will make my own decisions like we all do. We are all like minded on this topic. You will feel it in your heart when you or your loved ones lives are in danger. It's not a guessing game.

@jakejudson8578 believe me im all for carrying, I wish us in Canada had the right but that's another days topic. I often thought about how I would react as once the trigger is pulled you can't take back that bullet. My thought is really, how many that carry are really mentally capable of making the correct response in such a quick stressful event. Do you think everyone should go through some kind of reaction training like those rooms set up with good guy/bad guy situations? Just curious......

@@canadianbeefeater1672 sure why not. I'm sure some people would choke in the moment but not everyone. I think there's a mental block with some people about the realities of this world and how dangerous it can get, especially if you are unable to adequately keep yourself safe. I believe Jesus gives us the power to do the things we have to do, all we have to do is believe he is God! Works for me every time I pray to Him.

@jakejudson8578 our laws in Canada are so much different when it comes to protecting ourselves from bad guys. The biggest issue we have is we cannot harm, injure or kill a bad guy unless the bad guy "has caused life threatening physical injury" to our own body first. Even if bad guy breaks into our home we can't take him out until the above has taken place. Even then, our reaction cannot be "excessive force". Its absolutely terrible our lack of rights in Canada. I can tell you bad guy wouldn't be a witness after such attack on my life or family. We have basically zero rights to defend ourselves.

@@canadianbeefeater1672 they are God given, I don't trust man, no offense! Women either, though they would be more likely to catch me with my pants down. And what you said about letting someone hurt you so you can defend yourself is ridiculous! I'm pretty dumb and I didn't even have to think about that one. I guess it's ignorance which I can relate to. But I'm well aware of corruption in the world and it doesn't matter what walk of life we're talking about, I'm sure there's a bad guy in all of them. Sorry for preaching to the choir, judging by your profile picture you look way more experienced than me! I salute you sir!!

I only carry one chambered when I carry one of my 1911s. Darn near shot myself re-holstering my Glock 19 after lots of training. Humans make mistakes. Too many cops shoot themselves every year and they may need to carry one chambered in certain situations.
Is Glock Still Relevant?
