So i have an issue that no one is talking about ! That rear driver side quarter needed sanding ! You eluded to the fact that they missed sanding it at the factory ! Are you saying that Ferrari sands every car that leaves the factory ? Or are we to believe that for some reason that panel has an extremely poor ‘oem’ paint job ?

I used to work with a Ferrari dealership in Colorado just few years ago and this is not out of the ordinary. Ferrari’s thought process is that it’s on the dealership to finish up the detail, which usually means full body paint correction from all the quick rough sanding they do before it gets shipped out. The dealership that I worked for originally just wanted speed like Larry was saying but when we for a new detailer in who was young and passionate turned it around, and every brand new Ferrari that we got in usually had two to three days of paint correction then finish off with a ceramic coating. This is just with Ferrari though, the dealership also sold Bentley, Lotus, Karma and Rimac. And every single company’s cars came in like that (except rimac because while I was there no one bought one) they all just expected the dealership to finish the detail. But Ferrari definitely had the worst issues upon shipment.

I used to have a 2015 488 GTB in rosso scuderia, with a black roof (from factory). The black roof was 12'500 swiss francs (around 14'700$) when I got delivered the car, the battery was nuts the next day. So I called Ferrari and they just said, that batteries does not fall under warranty, because they say you have to keep the car on the battery tender when it's not in use. Completely crazy.. Also the car got delivered with a moldy carpet in the trunk. It got delivered on january, when it's pretty cold in Switzerland, so probably it was moldy, because of humid air, get in touch with cold air and condensed, resulting the mold. Ferraris answer was "Sometimes, this can happen, but will be cleaned for free by your dealer, you bought it from". Well I bought the car at Francorchamps, Belgium, which is around 600km away, from where I live. So I cleaned it by myself.. Another fault was, that on my specially ordered red seat belts was a 3cm big mesh, which came out of the belt. Ferrari's answer was "The function of the seat belt is not impaired by the protruding mesh and is therefore not covered by the warranty." Few weeks after this I went to a friend, who is a professional car detailer. I literally got shocked, when I saw the car under the special lights he got. The black roof had spray mist all over, and at some points you saw that there was a square formed sticker or something, because there was no spray mist in this area. At some point in the roof, you could even saw the rosso scuderia shimmering through!! So they paint the whole car at first with the primary color, and then they spray the black roof.. Ferrari didn't want to cooperate in repainting the roof, as they have a "strict quality control" at the factory in Italy and everything which is not perfect then, will be corrected immediately. BTW the whole car was covered in polishing residues. In every freaking spot! Last year I sold the car with around 9000km, but had to do various repair works on the car for 12'000 swiss francs (around 14'000$) for some leather faults, that came from factory, paint works at the side mirrors, as they're scratching the paint, when fold in/out, front cover gasket, and so on. I still have my 599 GTB since 2011, but will never buy another Ferrari again. I'm done with that crappy company!

The owner really needs to talk to Ferrari about this so it doesn't happen again! I used to work in a company that made headrest rods (those chrome sticks that slide inside the seat). I specifically did QA and sorted away deffective ones (scratched chrome, chip marks, rust, insufficient welds etc...). One day, someone let a bad rod slip and it went on to be installed in a BMW. The owner's child spotted this defect and they complained to BMW. Thanks to a relatively robust id and parts code system in the company, they were able to find out who exactly made and quality checked the part. That specific QA employee was fined and it stood as a warning for everyone else in QA to take their job seriously. And that was NOT a 500k Ferrari, just some 'plebian' BMW!

Ferrari in particular, has spent the better part of half a century building a mystique around the brand to the point where they don't care if customers are turned off because there will always be a line of people willing to put up with their bullshit just for a chance to be given a chance at owning a Ferrari.

@@nicolobonaventura5715it’s not surprise that Italian super car makers are poor quality now. Lamborghinis and Ferraris are known for poor quality when they used to be known for high quality. Sad when a $25k Toyota Corolla has better paint quality than a half a million dollar Ferrari 296 GTB. Reason why I got rid of my first Ferrari (20+ years ago) and have ONLY owned Porsches since and have a new G87 as daily for my wife. Never had a single problem with the 911s I’ve owned, ever. I inspect them when they get to the dealer, if I see something I don’t like (I’m very attentive and picky) Porsche gets it fixed. Takes longer, but when I’m spending $200k+ for a 911 I want a $200k+ quality car. Fortunately never had anything major and only minuscule interior pieces. I’ll buy and daily a Porsche 911 Turbo S until the day I die. My current one has 145k miles and hasn’t skipped a single beat. Next is the new facelifted 911.

To your point of who is responsible for the paint quality, from my experience working at dealerships, the manufacturer is supposed to get the vehicle as perfect as they can. This is easier on automation lines than it is for handbuilt or semi-handbuilt cars, but that is why they are so expensive. If the manufacturer does not do a proper job, it is ultimately on the dealership to make the customer happy. I'm sure exotic vehicle dealerships don't care near as much about retention, though, because where else are you going to go? If the dealership does not do an adequate job, the customer gets to deal with it. I personally would work that into the contract so I can charge the dealership.

I’m not gonna lie… this video was exciting to see because I’ve been detailing at an auto collision facility for over 2 years now and I’ve been dealing with cars that are exactly like this. (Not cool ferraris though, mainly Cadillacs and Chevys). All of this is a result from the painter sanding down entire panels, and then using a rotary to cut it out and never fully finishing. They’ll end up slinging compound everywhere, get it deep in every crack and crevice, and then it will sit there for days upon days until it finally gets to me, and then I have to refinish their panels, and cleanup all that compound. It’s been the biggest detailing nightmare and it’s just sad. It all ends up being on the dealership and the managers because they wanna (like you said) rush everything to reach month end numbers. Quality needs to come before quantity…

I think often times paint becomes an afterthought when so much attention is spent on things like mechanicals and electronics. Mind you too, people buy Ferraris (and other exotic Italian cars) for the look and the sound, not so much the reliability and quality of paint when it comes off the boat.
@henrylam92

@@stevencramsie9172 it is contradicting to say that people buy for the looks when the paint is a very crucial part of the looks especially with Ferraris who don't want you to customize their car in any form of way. So if you pay for that ferrari custom paint job for $28k wouldn't you want it to be the Ferrari way of being the top of the top? Ferrari used to rely on just it's mechanical engineering and brand loyalty. My old boss just bought SF90 and he is having issues lol

Ferrari have the largest mark up/ profit margain of any manufacturer by a mile. I think it is over 20%, so paying a cool half a mill and knowing they are making a chunk of money, I would expect much better finish quality. Back in 2008, I worked at Ford Jaguar Lincoln dealership and every jag came in with a thick covering coat layer to protect the paint during transport. We had to use a special cleaning agent to get rid of the layer and then that brought even more imperfections. Everytime we had a Jag to be delivered there was always some waxing/buffing happening and it would take forever then the seller gets mad at us for taking so much time cuz it's getting out of his commission. LOL. What a fun time we had.

I understand some imperfections that aren’t potentially disastrous, like in the GT3 comparison video you did a while back, that’s borderline acceptable in terms of delivery scuffs and manufacturing errors. This is a whole new level of unacceptable, especially from a marque as prestigious as Ferrari. I’m VERY surprised that quality control even let this car out in the condition it’s in. I always hesitate to place blame in any situation, but this is plain and simple negligence on the part of the paint department at Ferrari. Thank god there are guys like you Larry that can save these cars and bring them up to their full potential! I don’t know what we’d do without high level detailers.

This is very normal for this type of vehicle, especially those this custom colour finishes. Most manufacturers of this type pay for their cars to be processed at vehicle prep centres to resolve these types of issues, which aren’t always visible at factory (some defects become evident after time, especially when the car has been through changes in climate during shipping). Also the mark you found on the bonnet is either a blister caused by poor base coat drying (heat from polish causing it to flash off and bubble), or a substrate hole in the panel (common on painted carbon fibre panels)

I also had the honor of working on one of those. Car was delivered almost like you received it, only difference is that they washed it and put a quick detailer before giving it to the customer. The car was full black, i let you imagine the amount of swirls when it was under the sunlight. I don’t understand how it’s possible to deliver a car like that. It’s really a shame for Ferrari! For reference that dealership is about 300 miles away from the factory in Maranello. So no it’s not the boat or the transport’s fault.

For a half a million dollars I would expect perfection. The finish of that paint job is atrocious and that's after Ferrari obviously had a go at trying to make it better by sanding and buffing the paint. Pretty pathetic that after polishing a turd, it's still a turd. If I were the owner I wouldn't have accept delivery of the vehicle. I would have held Ferrari accountable and made them fix it to my satisfaction.
