Amnesia easily was the scariest game I have ever played, yes, but it never made me scream like a little girl, like every single exaggerated reaction video on KZbin. This might be a bit of a spoiler but... Every single time it freaked me out I just sat there, quietly, holding my breath, as if I were Daniel and I didn't want to scream like a little girl because that would have been a bad idea. Last thing Daniel would have wanted to do was scream so loud that every damn grunt and brute in Brennen-hellhole-burg knew that he was hiding in the morgue, staring in horror at the pile of corpses.

Its a shame that this days the Indi devs are the ones making good games or thinking of something creative And if there are any good Indi games its being overshadowed by the AAA titles from huge companies because they advertise the living hell out of their bullshit I mean remember DOTA, it use to be just a mod/ map for W3, made by two guys that though it would be fun, Or Dust Elisian Tail was made by one guy in 4years Ohh and lets not forget Crap-Com who took a huge shit on 4 Megaman games then flushed it down the toilet, where now a indi team is making Mighty #9 "DAMN YOU CORPORATION" I say
@Asger100211 жыл бұрын
It's because the video game market is highly unstable. Video games costs too friggin' much now that everyone wants "Better graphics" and such, that a team of 3 people can't put it together anymore. It takes millions of dollars, and that is why they can't take any risks, almost every video game company is one failed AAA titled from being bankrupted.
@RobertAniFreak11 жыл бұрын
Asger Frederiksen Reason why companies are getting bankrupt is because 1: The economic prices are so ridiculous that people lose their jobs and homes and cant afford socks so how should companies if nobody can afford games and 2: because they fuck the community one too many times and nobody trusts them, Like Capcom or EA, nobody buys their games because they don't want to fucked up the ass anymore
@Asger100211 жыл бұрын
RobertAniFreak That is wrong in so many ways: Video games are actually at their cheapest right now, if you adjust for inflation. Google it. Nobody buys their games? Look at Battlefield, one of the biggest AAA titles along with COD. And capcom... I don't know a lot about their works except for Remember Me, which was absolutely amazing if you ask me. So I'd trust them. I never trust reworks, though. Oh, and ridiculous economic prices? Oh please, I'm guessing you're from the U.S, because I've heard so much whining from them about a rise in prices of everything. Yeah, it's still cheaper over there than in, say, Denmark.
@RobertAniFreak11 жыл бұрын
Asger Frederiksen Thank god I'm not from the US, Capcom pretty much ruined most of their games on its own and canceled 4 megaman games half way trough which means it was a waste of money And yea BattleFiend lets be honest you have people who bought that game for 7000$ And you have religious extremists, racists and sexists walking around public so You can't argue you have a lot of weirdos in the gaming community... Who think freaking "Ride to Hell" was good, or "I cant see difference between Devil May Cry and DmC"

Amnesia still holds a place in my heart after all these years
@Icantdothatrightnow9 жыл бұрын
I've never found Amnesia to be all that scary. I'm not some hard-assed mofo when it comes to horror, but Amnesia was just so mind-numbingly boring that it never really got a chance to scare me, because I spent the entire time hoping it would end. Right after finishing Amnesia, however, I tried out Silent Hill 2, and, aside from being one of my favorite games of all time, is also my scariest game of all time. Don't know why, it just scared me to shitpants mode everytime I played it.
@nihilumbraste24289 жыл бұрын
Icantdothatrightnow Yeah, same here. Don't get me wrong, I have a very deep respect for Frictional, but SH2 made me want to explore the environment much more. And I couldn't stop gleefully playing with the physics.
@HPSmugscraft9 жыл бұрын
I'm kinda the opposite. I just started Amnesia last night and was cringing and grasping my head. Meanwhile, I found SH2 less scary and more sad. Granted, the latter had some creepy parts, but it didn't screw with my mind. But hey, to each his own.
@Icantdothatrightnow9 жыл бұрын
Jack Van Kirk Aye, I totally understand your opinion. Hell, I understand MY opinion LESS. I feel like Amnesia is scarier, I feel like it SHOULD be, anyway. But I, I don't know. Not sure if I stated it above (I probably did, just too lazy to read my writing again) but Amnesia absolutely bored the shit out of me. And that is not to say that I need games to have combat for me to have fun with them, I love tons of combat-less horror games. But there's something about Amnesia that just bored me to a point of dreading playing it because I knew that every second I played it I would want to stop. Whereas Silent Hill 2 just, disturbed me. I even fear quit it at one point. For the first time in my entire horror-watching, horror-playing, horror-reading life, I fearquit something. But, none the less, I have tremendous respect for Frictional, and will definitely be checking out their new game. EDIT: Yeah, I said that I found the game boring in my original comment. Gonna shorten my rant in this comment lol.
@DL-ij7tf9 жыл бұрын
+Icantdothatrightnow I really don't understand this. Can you explain what was so terrifying about Silent Hill 2 other than the atrocious voice acting? I understand that art is a totally subjective experience and all, but man I don't understand why people think it's that scary. Hell I even thought Dark Souls was scarier than Silent Hill 2 (and way, way better).
@oldannyboy379 жыл бұрын
Silent Hill 2 scared me more because of the atmosphere and monster design. I felt like the atmosphere changed as you progressed through the game to give the maximum effect for what was going on. I picked up on the gender/sexuality element of the symbolism in SH2 pretty early on. I'm not sure why, but it made me feel really unsettled and uncomfortable. Amnesia was scarier when I was actually playing it, but the horror elements in SH2 stuck with me long after I put the controller down. To me that's why SH2 is scarier (to me at least).

Heh, I love this review. The "Three kinds of horror games" bit is one of my favourite little rants by Yahtzee. Great game too, even if I was a bit hasty and foolish to say "This will usher in a new golden era of independent horror greatness!" because fucking Slenderman had to come along and drunkenly piss on everything. I will say though, why does everyone cite the water monster bit as like the single most horrifying part of the game? Granted, that bit was scary and I fucking hate anything living in water (I even have an irrational fear of harmless regular fish. No really, recently I nearly shat my pants playing GTA V when I was running from cops, jumped in water and HOLY SHIT WHAT WAS THAT EEWWWW CLOWNFISH AHH *jumps out and gets twatted on the head by a cop*) but for me The Choir was the scariest bit in the game. Oh god, the huge open area and those fucking torture devices - I KNEW they would do something scary and yet I still panicked the fuck out when the scary thing I knew would happen actually happened.
@racer9276 жыл бұрын
Afraid of Monsters does just as well despite having weapons, it's very rare with actual in-your-face jumpscares and monster closets. Most of the scares from from images flickering so fast, in the distance and/or in the corner of your vision that you just wonder if it's your imagination or if you saw an eerily grotesque face flicker in the sky. The fact that the twitcher enemies are relatively quiet and simply rush at you are just as scary, especially in the forest areas where your flashlight is the stupid GoldSrc aura-of-light-around-the-crosshair rather than a projected texture in Cry of Fear or any Source Engine game and suddenly a twitcher snarls from behind and you take damage in the dark.

Jon Squid well, in amnesia, the monsters don't jump out of closets and corners. you can usually hear them or know that something is wrong, but most of the time you only know something is there because you turned arround and saw it, otherwise it may be confusd for squeaky floor boards or the wind. it's kind of hard to explain, you should go and play the game for bit to get feel for what I'm saying.

t14016807c And so I shall, but I hope you don't mind me setting my expectations low. I'm very picky about my horror games.
@skittleserval509810 жыл бұрын
Amnesia doesn't practice jumpscares. There's maybe one or two, but most of the scares come on subtly, but make you scare yourself because you recognize the danger. This is a completely different concept from a game like five nights at freddy's, where the scares come suddenly and scare you largely because you heard a loud noise and saw a sudden, disturbing image. There's worlds of difference between the two, the latter requires no talent, and the former requires a carefully constructed atmosphere and execution.

I am 4 hours deep into Amnesia and I am really liking it, but..... once you realize nothing is PROBABLY going to happen I don't mind just running through the pitch black cellar while looking around for anything needed to finish the puzzle.

The blurry vision effect is because according to the sanity thing in the items menu you have a horrible headache.

Sanity for me spawns one of two (But usually both) terrifying almost unkillable creatures. And no one else can help. And then you die. Also, your screen starts moving and swaying. Basically what it's like to be drunk.

Next time I work in the haunted house I am most definitely jumping out at people and shouting "Abloogy woogy woo"

This vid is really awesome. The "wibbly wobbly" kinda reminded me of Doctor Who. And the way you phrased things was hilarious. XD

The invisible water monster for one. The monsters are meant to be a little scary but I can see where you're coming from. Like Yahtzee said, the more scary the monster is, is the less you see of it. So after your first couple of encounters with a monster, it's appearance stops being scary and the only thing about it that's scares you is the paranoia if it's right around the corner or not.

Like he said in his Dead Space review, it only startles you. A lot of people seem to confuse this for actual atmosphere. You see Slenderman and hear a loud noise that startles you for a second. After that you carry on. Good games build tension and create atmosphere that make the player feel uneasy and thats what horror should be all about.

Don't know why but when he says "Abloogy, Woogy, Woo", it makes me EVERY TIME! Anyone agree?

well there is one big contra: if you die, the monsters just go away, so it doesnt matter if you run away or not, because the Monster will just go away after it kills you. When you respawn, the monsters are gone and you dont have anything to worry about
