It wouldn't be that unsensible compared to the nonsensical nature of the game itself, except that in the early chainsaw scene the chainsaw is literally shown to cut through things like solid wood like it's a light-saber instantaneously rather than being a chainsaw. Gameplay-wise I actually like the idea of being able to parry it, though, as long as it's not easy and is still extremely risky. Some might argue this takes the tension out of it - but I think that loss of tension is worthwhile to some extent if it makes you feel like a badass for pulling something like that off. Kinda like how I felt about Alien Isolation, my favorite pure horror game experience of all time (I wouldn't count RE4 or games like Dead Space as "pure horror"). In that game you'll die to the Alien if you get caught and mostly need to sneak around, but there are times where you can stun it and escape later in the game as it is sprinting towards you which while making it "easier" also are very cathartic and tense experiences in their own right.

@@aiceriz7923 Leon in RE4 is similar to Dante in DMC3: they're so lame that they're wrap right back around to being cool. His one-liners were terrible and any time he talks to Ada he sounds like he wants to suck her toes. That was the appeal of the character, at least to me (and it was a fairly believable development from the lovesick idiot he is in RE2). RE4R Leon in turn is a believable development of the RE2R Leon. It's just different, and given that the remakes haven't overwritten the originals ala Warcraft 3 Deforged or the GTA Trilogy I find the changes acceptable.

@aiceriz7923 Жыл бұрын
@@enterprise9001 I heavily disagree. DMC3 Dante was actually cool, super fun, and it's the only good written version of his character in the entire series with a proper character arc to boot. The only "lame" aspect of his character was his deliberately juvenile cocky attitude early on that made you think that he was full of himself, which is something that he grows out of throughout the game which is directly tied to his character arc focused around him growing into his father's footsteps. His character became lame in DMC4&5 when they turned him into flanderized clown with no purpose in the story. Also: "any time he talks to Ada he sounds like he wants to suck her toes" Did we play the same series? RE4 Leon clearly cared about her but he never sounded like a simp and he never let his feelings cloud his judgment, that's why he chases her after she stole the sample. The Damnation movie shows that he can act plenty casual around her and RE6 shows that he's lovesick and cannot let her go, to the point where he's willing to protect her with his life. Og games also hinted that Ada clearly has feelings for him despite everything. I don't see it at all in REmake 4.

@SinHurr Жыл бұрын
Same. And even some of the boss characters have a bit of personality and back story now. Chief Mendez likes photography! Or did before he was turned into a Crombie. There's more focus on what would be called "standard" character development and interaction. Like, obviously I miss some of the camp nonsense but over all I'm very happy with how this turned out.
@ObiJohnKenobi67 Жыл бұрын
I agree, Ashley came across as way more likeable and her interactions are much more cute, but I feel like the lack of camp kind of takes away from some characters. Salazar is honestly the best example of this. He went from the comedic highlight of the game to sort of a forgettable antagonist imo.
@lukeskywalker987 Жыл бұрын
@@ObiJohnKenobi67 Personally I thought Salazar was very interesting; He's a small and repulsive heir to a line of legendary heroes, and grew up on their stories while receiving nothing but disgust and contempt from everyone around him. So when Leon shows up like a modern hero, Salazar treats him with a surprising respect by calling him a "knight" and treating their conflict as theatrical. He only drops the act when Leon goes off script by shooting him during a monologue. I think it's really clever that they adapted the original's campiness into someone more Romantic and Theatrical to fit the greater focus on horror. Granted, it's not exactly clear and requires you to read random files across the castle so I'm sure a lot of people missed it.

A bit plus for me was the combat and enemy AI. The more versatile, agile and aggressive enemies really work wonders. One of my concerns going in was that modern controls would make combat too easy, but on the first play through at least the intensity of the original is retained thanks to the smoother controls being countered by more aggressive enemies. @@hollandscottthomas OG RE4 is one of my favourite games of all times and I think the controls work fine for the game they designed. BUT I absolutely agree that the purists are just lying to themselves that this isn't just an objectively WAY better playing video game lol. The movement, shooting, melee, knife, added stealth kills all feels, looks and sounds WAY better. Especially on PC at 120 FPS , being able to accurately nail my shots like John Wick is perfectly balanced by the faster and more overwhelming numbers of enemies. Even the more recent games have been pretty campy with shit like the chainsaw duel in 7 or the woman who shoots bugs out of her crotch and the OP hillbilly who just fucking punches all the monsters to death, or in 8 the bit where you fight a dragon and later on have a mecha battle. And those games still managed to be scary and have good survival horror gameplay while being full of silly shit like that, it isn't even like some tradeoff where you have to sacrifice the horror or the more slow-paced, strategic gameplay in exchange for the fun campiness. Sometimes Yahtzee's cynical yuckster attitude that we all love him for gets in the way of his quality as a game critic. The knife point is a great example. The combat and knife system is far more complex in the Remake. In the original you could do horizontal slashes to stun/damage enemies and it was your fallback weapon. In the Remake, you can parry, perfect parry into melee, perform horizontal slashes for damage/stun, perform precise stabs for damage/stun, stealth kill, execute stunned enemies, execute enemies who are about to enter a second phase, block insta-kill attacks, block projectiles, and even delimb enemies. This new knife system is so OP that making it breakable and in need of repairs is a no-brainer for balance. And if you're skilled enough, upgrade it, and use other knife consumables wisely you'll need to repair it less. Yet the main takeaway from this review is "yes it's neat you can now parry and do stealth, but you're lame for making my knife breakable". It's such an oversimplification and sounds almost whiny for the sake of "it's not exactly like the thing I remember is."

Yeah, the new abilities with the knife were the best additions to the gameplay. The combat (especially the bosses) is objectively better. Yahtzee's such a fanboy of the original that he complains about any changes, positive or negative. He already had the narrative of the Remake being the original with its "edges sanded off" months ago (he talked about it in a podcast). He complains about how there's no Salazar robot section but never mentions that there's a fire breathing Salazar statue in the elevator room (or how the new minecart section is far more campy than the original version). He even turns being able to parry the chainsaw into a negative somehow.
@brentblayoneblayone3948 Жыл бұрын
Yeah the combat here in RE4 Remake is objectively deeper, more engaging, and WAY smoother while having a higher skill ceiling. Parrying, knife degradation, and aiming while moving dramatically change the feel for the better across the board, it both forces you to be more mindful and measured in your movements and actions, while also making said movements and actions blend together and animate 100x better. Saying anything else reveals the rose tinged glasses that nostalgia whores are wearing lol. I literally played RE4 OG and Remake back to back and they're both excellent, but in terms of the feel of the core combat it's a HUGE improvement for Remake. Though to be fair, Yahtzee has never been a remotely legitimate game critic IMO, he's always incredibly biased and reductive/dismissive of anything that doesn't cater to his exact tastes. He's a comedy writer and games are the subject. Though TBH, I find Worth A Buy much funnier, as his outrage is so genuine and over the top that it's impossible not to enjoy it lol, Yahtzee's pretentiousness and snarky dismissiveness is more annoying than funny as of late IMO.

@EllieBerryPie Жыл бұрын
I think in concept, a remake or maybe something closer to a remaster makes sense on some level. Even as someone who beat the original back when it was new , going back to the controls and, although smooth for the time, now somewhat clunky movement are difficult to go back to. Having to stop moving to aim would put a lot of people off these days, and having to then aim with the same stick you use to move is really jaring. (And personally I don't think it's jaring in a way that adds to the sense of horror like fixed camera in Silent Hill or the original RE games) Apparently the modern consoles ports fix that part. And honestly the new graphics are a welcome addition. The fact they changed the tone is where the biggest problem it seems, but hey if someone who wouldn't play the original because how off putting the controls are plays this, well at least they are playing a version of one of my favorites games ever made, even if it isnt the version that I fell in love with.

Knife degradation was never an issue for me, I think I only had one instance in 25 hours where I didn't have a knife (they give you so many extras that it easily carries you until you upgrade durability). Boss fights are for the most part objectively better, pacing in the 3rd act doesn't drag as much, characters feel slightly less one-dimensional, there is more enemy variety, and defensive gameplay is infinitely better. As someone who got into resident evil through resident evil 4 I'm going to say: really enjoyed it in every capacity yes there was a few things that are missing but I also didn't notice they were gone. They still have the statue and it's still technically chases you over a bridge just it does it automatically. Not sure if you just didn't notice that. They just took out all of the scenes that had QTEs. But it still chases you across the bridge just you don't do anything for it because it was a QTE.

@@marcosdheleno you can shoot the bell once you reach the church in the original and all it does is spawn a few Ganados, in the remake you can shoot the bell from the village and end the siege early. The chainsaw people added so much to the horde-horror-factor of RE4. You were always focusing then down somewhat and the adrenaline was so high when they decided to stand up again after a shotgun blast and you having no sniper bullets. But with weapon degradation and knife blocking that just Falls flat. Now your blood pressure is just high from annoyances not adrenaline.

I don't usually disagree with Yahtzee but this review felt a bit cynical. Which I get it, it's Yahtzee's thing, but he didn't even mention the new enemies/weapons, the incredible attention to detail involving some of the original secrets and such (shooting the lake still does the thing for example), the expanded areas, and the fact that despite a couple areas not making it into the remake it's still a good 90% of the original game. Love ya yahtz but this is a good ass remake
@blitzstange Жыл бұрын
Agreed MMY2K. I don't think I've disagreed with Yahtzee's opinion more than on this review. His grips are reasonable, but he ignored all the fun stuff ! It feels like he got the cliff notes on what was bad in the game then wrote a review without playing it.
@braystar8578 Жыл бұрын
There's quite a few things I disagree with in this review, especially the last sum ups. Combat is amazing and fun, and the knife is more powerful but also tactical, you have to think when you want to use it, knowing having no knives means no parry. Leon and Ashley also have more chemistry together compared to the original.
@jenkinsuu Жыл бұрын
Except the knife is actually much weaker especially early on, as durability actually means now you can really only use it to parry instead of the general tool it was in the original. Sure you can pick up the disposable knives but that’s a ton of clutter in your inventory which could be used to store more ammo since less knife means more shooting. Instead of dodging and weaving and combining your pistol, kick attacks and your knife which I’d argue takes more skill, now it’s just stand still, shoot them, press the parry button when it lights up, kick them and shoot them while theyre down. Feels much less skillful and rewarding

Always been my tiff with "remakes". They change the game to appeal to the new generation while hoping the nostalgia group will still love it for what it is. Only to gasp when we list complaints of said changes and the collective why? The old saying,"If it isn't broke, why fix it?" Its why I've not touched any of the RE remakes nor FF 7 remake cause of said changes.

I think, after years of watching yahtzee, this is first time im disagreeing with him. Imo capcom has been knocking it out of the park with the RE remakes and especially RE4. Leon is honestly as campy as ever (yeah, the hand line is gone, but they added ALOT of combat banter thats just as cheesy), the knife mechanic actually makes a lot of sense and works well with the new stealth takedowns (if you think about it, the knifes durability is just another form of "ammo", that you need to manage, as you should in a survival horror game. Otherwise the knife would be OP as hell, considering you can take down semi-bosses like the potato sack or the new cow-enemys), i like ashley way more as a character (even tho they removed her "ballistics" lmao) and her voice actor makes me feel genuinely sorry for the poor girl, being stuck in that hell) All the new areas and enemys also fit right into the world. The quests, admittedly, are just an expansion of the blue medallions from the first RE4, but are still nice to have. Especially the ones that have you fight elite enemys make sense for the game imo. Do you skip it and conserve your spare ressources, or do you risk burning through your entire inventory for the chance of additional loot?

This disagreement shows exactly the usefulness of a critic: their consistency of tastes and opinions. Learning what they like and dislike, alongside their specific biases, lets you know whether a game would be a good recommendation for you. It's perfectly fine to disagree with Yahtzee's takes every now and then, because it shows that it shows the range of what you and him agree with, which helps us better judge whether a game is worth playing or not, based on his reviews

Beating or even matching the original was always going to be a challenge. It was such an amazing, campy and hilarious, if a bit hard to control masterpiece. 90% of people in this comment section complaining about the game being too serious or about the knife durability either haven't played the game and are parroting what Yahtzee is saying or are just blinded by nostalgia, i swear. RE4R is made with so much love and care that it's impossible to not acknowledge that, yet this review conveniently does not say that yes the Salazar robot is still in the game, yes Leon still says dumb one liners throughout the whole game, and the fucking minecart section in chapter 11 is possibly the craziest shit i've seen in recent videogame memory. Dude they even have Saddler come out nowhere just to pose in front of an explosion like a B movie villain. They have Krauser unapologetically saying I WANT POWER in the corniest, cheesiest way. But nah, right? The remake is too serious. Gtfo here with that shit.
@jesuszamora6949 Жыл бұрын
This is sort of the problem with remakes in general. Yeah, you're going to get a lot of people loving it for nostalgic reasons, but you're also going to get a lot of people hating it for same. It's kind of the same shit that happened with the RE3 remake. People act like that game is this huge downgrade from the original, and while there are certainly parts the original RE3 did better (Nemesis was more organic), people forget that the original was a mostly loveless cash grab done because Code Veronica was taking too goddamn long, and that the "action-oriented RE" spin they were going for isn't realized anywhere near as well in the original, owing to the camera angles not jiving with an action game.
