I love how this is not an album; it's the story of a man who had one hell of a life from the get go, from start to finish, The way of a true Viking to the end. The more I listen to this, and other melodic deth: Insomnium, Kalmah, Belakor, I think..... man there is nothing like this in the mainstream metal community. Some people can't get past the vocals, I couldn't put this stuff down due to the guitar and got used to the vocals.

The story arc of this album is quite sad when you think about it, a boy gonna astray to become an outlaw after killing trying to protect the person he loved, dwelling on the past his whole life. I love this whole album so much, it's like a retelling of a man's whole life starting with his first kill and subsequent exile, barely surviving his journey, "enjoying" his exploits as a viking pillaging and plundering and slaughtering, then getting rejected by the love of his life, before returning home, getting killed in battle and Freya guiding him into Valhalla.... beautiful!

I was always interested in archetype Psychologie as pioniered by C.G. Jung. It’s glorious how effectively Amon Amarth expresses the warrior archetype, obviously part of our collective unconscious, man but also women alike. That’s how it should be. This archetypical energy is to be used for strength, faith, pure passion and feeling secure about one’s goals and convictions. They represent that so well. Many Metal bands have that flavor more or less, but here it is very clear and to the essence of the warrior in a humans soul. Not to destroy only, but to hang on and to create.
