Éamonn O’Moore presented global data on people in prisons worldwide and stressed that more than 30 million people worldwide move between their communities and prisons annually. Prisons represent a high-risk environment for transmission and amplification of infectious diseases, and therefore states have a specific statutory and ethical obligation to protect the health of people in prison and beyond. He pointed out that imprisonment represents a public health opportunity to address health inequalities and to improve the health of underserved populations. To achieve that, one good practice example is the UK Health and Justice Information System that ensures continuity of care and transmission of health and surveillance data.
The Robert Koch Colloquium is an annual interdisciplinary lecture series, each year focusing on one specific innovative public health topic, such as Burden of Disease (2019), Public Health Surveillance (2021), Climate Change and Public Health (2022), and Social Inequities in Health (2023).
