ALIVE INSIDE is a joyous cinematic exploration of music’s capacity to reawaken our souls and uncover the deepest parts of our humanity. Filmmaker Michael Rossato-Bennett chronicles the astonishing experiences of individuals around the country who have been revitalized through the simple experience of listening to music. His camera reveals the uniquely human connection we find in music and how its healing power can triumph where prescription medication falls short.

My son suffered a massive stroke at 17. He was completely unresponsive for weeks. Doctors said he would never improve. I hadn't seen this, but I felt like music could help. I made a playlist for him and played it non-stop for days. He can walk and talk now, and has minimal cognitive deficits. Music is powerful.

I have mental health issues - severe chronic depression. Being depressed doesn’t mean I feel sad. Being depressed is feeling complete apathy. Devoid of feelings. Hollow. Something I realized. In 2007 I started working from home and I didn’t listen to music as much. No car ride to work. No stop at the gym on the way home. Anyhow, my depression got worse and worse and worse and to a point where I don’t want to leave my house. But what I’ve found, is that when I listen to music I like - I see an incredibly positive effect on my mood. I feel more of everything and my anxiety drops. It makes me laugh, cry, it fills all of me. Music is the spark of life. Since watching this I’m going to do an experiment - where I will listen to music for 20 min daily or maybe twice daily. Anyhow, I want to do it for a month and see what comes of it.

I can't stop crying. One of the most amazing documentaries Ive ever seen on the healing powers of music. My Dad is 8 years in to dementia. I made him a playlist of all his favourite songs, while he could still remember them. He loves listening and singing along with them, even though he barely knows who he is anymore. And he loves to play his harmonica. When I asked him how he remembered which notes to play, he simply pointed to his head, and said, Well its all up here - I remember.. Stunning

I worked on a lock down Alzheimer’s / Dementia unit for 10 years. It’s like these people are in prison. They eat when they are told, they shower when they are told, they take their meds when told. It was horrible. When Covid hit these residents couldn’t see their families. Nothing could be brought in from the outside. Our church services were stopped, pet therapy was stopped. The birthday parties stopped. We lost 16 residents out of 28 in 2020. Residents were made to stay in their rooms. No activities were done. These residents just wasted away from grief. It was so very heartbreaking. The company I worked for was all about the all mighty $. Most of the time we worked short staffed. 1 person for 28 residents. 1 person to assist with in eating, bathroom and changing, showering. 1 person. Residents were being neglected but a blind eye was turned to them. In early 2021 I could no longer take it. I resigned my position but oh how I miss my residents.

I've worked on a lock down unit to, also in the Covid period. We lost 11 out of 16. 2 with covid and the others wasted away and died. I quit, because I couldn't work in these places anymore. I have little hope that the situation in general will change. I am glad we had much more staff, so we did the best we could. But I wont forget that a family watched their mother die behind the window. Thank you for your heartwrenching, also relatable story.

Incredible!! I suffered from a horrible brain injury 10 years ago and I have memory issues because of it, but watching this it occurred to me that music I used to love will come on and I can remember every single word from those songs even after many years of not hearing it. I’m going to tap into this more for me personally. This needs to get shared!

My darling 62 year old wife has secondary progressive MS, has an underlying heart condition and has survived 2 strokes, one in each hemisphere. She is severely paralysed all down left side and has dementia. She’s so bashed up - but the music in her headphones brings the woman I married back. For a while she’s in the world again and her eyes shine and so do mine but for different reasons.

We let our great grandma stay with us at our house before she passed. We took care of her, and that was really sad. She was always working on stuff, setting up inflatables in her yard for the most minor of holidays, and you get the point. She had this hyperactive life, and then she was cut off to just laying down and talking. She just felt so bad that she couldn’t pay us back, other than saying “thank you”.

I’m not fully done with the video but if there isn’t one, there should be a GoFundMe attached to this video. Or, another idea is - think about the number of older electronics we have and don’t use (phones, MP3 players, tablets, etc). I wonder if those could be donated to nursing homes so they can be repurposed for residents to use for music or even games they may like to play. My great grandmother always had the radio on, or a musical program on TV (yes I’ve seen every Lawrence Welk episode and Liberace special) and played cards - solitaire daily. She lived to be 98 with no memory loss. I think there is something with the music and keeping the mind active

I work in elder care and my oldest son used to come with me to bring games and just hang out with my patients. He saw the good bad and ugly. He called it the pound for people. It is a sadly true relation in many ways. I give my all to ensure while I’m there it is not that way. It is difficult for our elders more than most caregivers understand or are willing to see. It’s heart breaking I agree.

I'm really mad they kept using the name iPod. This feels like intentional product placement thinking you NEED specifically an ipod in order to help someone. Any music player will do, any MP3 player, apple has become so money hungry over time and it isn't fair for people like these, where music can reignite their spark.

These caregivers are such a tangible blessing in our world. If we pay them what they are worth they would receive $8,000 a month--to start. At a home where everyone pays an average of $6,500, this is a realistic expectation. Greedy profiteering is the only thing preventing it. Lets pass laws to makw this happen.

Most nursing homes have shared rooms, open doors, and community rooms where a speaker would disturb others. That’s why the focus is on headphones for daily use. When we visited my grandmother at her nursing home, though, we were able to get a small private room so we could all listen and sing together. It really calmed my grandmother and briefly restored some of her cognitive function.
