The soundtrack of my youth. In 1967, when I was eight, my father walked into a record store for a birthday present for my mother and asked what was new and exciting. The clerk said Sgt. Pepper's, so he bought it. My mother, who was more of a classical music fan, played it once and laid it aside. I got hold of it and took it downstairs and played it over... and over... and over again. It blew my mind. Expanded my mind. Took me out of myself. On heavenly journeys. It opened new worlds of scenes and sounds and colours. A liberation. A joy. An inspiration. What life could be. Forever grateful.

Makes me laugh when people say they weren’t great musicians? John was an excellent rhythm guitarist Paul one of the best bass players in Rock history, George has created more famous guitars riffs than any other musician and ringo is often cited as an influence by many famous drummers with his unorthodox but very memorable drumming, and just listen to the creativity of songs like strawberry fields and I am the walrus, complex musical masterpieces.

It seems unlikely, though, that any of the Beatles were great as instrumentalists. I admit I say this as a non-musician who MOSTLY going off what I've read. On the other hand, there's nothing in The Beatles catalog has nothing at all like the musicianship of "Voodoo Chile" by Jimi Hendrix. The closest is probably "While My Guitar Gently Weeps" which was Clapton on guitar. With all that being said, of course, what really made the Beatles what they were was the songwriting. Best songwriters ever.

The whiny, unusual, background instrumentation on "baby, you're a rich man" that kicks in just short of 10 secs into the track is John Lennon randomly rolling an orange over the keyboard of a clavioline. I have a music degree and I am a musician and musicologist .I published a book a few years ago debunking your appraisal of the Beatles .I also played in a group / Band in the early 60's in the north of England playing gigs in the same places as the Beatles.They were not so revered as you allege and were not particularly rated in Manchester ,and parts of Liverpool. The band we all followed was a three piece power trio called "The Big Three ".They were not matched in their live onstage magnificence by any other band in the land ,except by ,perhaps the " Pirates " from London.And no,the " fab four " did not come anywhere near making false teeth gyrate.The Beatles became a nice acceptable band for pubescent young girls to scream at,The Big Three ,and the Pirates were for grown ups !

The Beatles were so into with the feelings and attitudes of young people and their needs and wants to let them think for themselves and express themselves. The establishment didn't want or accept change and tried to put the youths down. The Beatles were such a blessing because they didn't particularly adore their government, the U.S. government or any other government, they represented the youth in their music and change was happening for the good thank God. Putting the great music aside for a moment, the Beatles story of how they rose up from almost nothing to the GOAT rock band is simply an amazing story. Not to mention the individual stories of the four of them, the people they met along the way that helped them. Had they not found a drummer named Pete Best, perhaps they don’t go to Hamburg and learn their craft. The whole story is almost unbelievable, like it was made up. They improved so much from 1962-1963 and learned to write great songs at exactly the right time. They never repeated themselves once the hits started coming either. My most favorite subject for over 50 years now.

Very dark days for me, then, our beloved President was assassinated- I couldn’t believe this would happen in all places like the US of A. The freest nation in the world. Just the other day…on Jan. 24, ‘23 I was in my kitchen doing some things…where there’s a Bose Wave radio atop my fridge. I often put it on where my oldies station awaits. All of a sudden this boisterous and nervous drum roll erupted from the radio…followed by an imperative shouting chorus of how “She loves you yeah, yeah, yeah!” was thrown at me. At that very second I tried to imagine what this was like in ‘63 or 4 when it first arrived over the airwaves. The song still excites me! I loved every second of it - all 2 1/2 minutes of it. I mean these guys wrote their OWN songs and this tune opens with the chorus! This was huge. They weren’t a covers band and it was a big deal. It changed most everything. What I find fascinating is that within the less-than-three minute songs they wrote, there so much vital information within those couple minutes. Song crafters at their best!

Their foundation in '63 and '64 set it all in motion, but it was their 1965 album 'Rubber Soul,' and their 1966 album 'Revolver,' where their music really took a left turn and became ARTISTICALLY EXPLOSIVE!. If you compare what they were doing in 1963 to what they ended up doing a mere seven years later, it's like listening to two completely different groups. What's hard to believe is how little time they were actually together, yet how long their influence has lasted!

They were together as a performing band far less than a decade (especially with Ringo's uncanny percussion talents onboard)... and yet they changed the world in ways that are still being talked about, felt and evaluated today in 2023--- over sixty years later. Sadly, John was lost to a madman's bullets at the tender age of 40... and George was ravaged by cancer while still a relatively young man. Ringo genuinely seems immortal ... and so does the immense talent that is Sir Paul McCartney, MBE. I grew up with The Beatles, having turned 14 just a few months after they became world famous on Ed Sullivan's TV show. The rest ~ as we all know ~ is history. The Beatles' influence continues to this day -- and who can say how long their impact will endure. 'My guess is that their music and their cultural impact will never fully fade away... long after all four have lived out their mortal lives. The impact of The Beatles is likely to be as endless as the oceans' tides.

The Beatles certainly changed my life. I was born in 1954 so I was at just the right age to fall in love with them when they arrived on the scene. I saw them on The Ed Sullivan Show and from that point on they have been my favorite music artists of all time. They’ve been the soundtrack of my youth and the music I’ve turned to that always has the power to make me happy no matter what tragedies I’ve experienced in my life, and there have been many. I was too young to have an opportunity to see them in person, but I WAS able to attend several Paul McCartney concerts and he’s always been fabulous! One time I was on vacation with my kids visiting my cousins in Lake Tahoe and Paul was playing at AT&T Park in San Francisco during that week. So of course I drove down to SF (about a 3 or 4 hour drive) met up with a group of my friends, went to the concert (which was FABULOUS!) then drove back up to Tahoe to rejoin my family on vacation. Paul played an extra TWO hours that night, so it was 4am when I got back to my family! I loved every second! 🎶🎸🎹🎵❤

When my eldest sister was 14/15 she was in love with Paul and dad took the whole family in the car from Holland to London (7 kids mum and dad) back then you could drive with no seatbelts on. We stayed in a hotel in London, walked the street and drove to Abbey Road and to the Studio as well as to Paul's house so that Kitty could see his place, took a photo of the brick wall. We all had photo's of us walking Abbey Road too. This would have been 1970 as my youngest brother was only a young child in a pram born in 1969. My sister Michele is named after the song Michele my bell. I use to sing it to her at her cot when I was 4. It was so good to take my youngers sister to see Paul McCartney on the Got Back tour in Sydney on 28th October 2023. Wont be able to top that gig.

1. WRONG. No singer/band, actor, ever changed anything: it is the pop culture mindless masses who DO IT FOR them so, THEY, the fans, who change music or "the world." 2. They are hardly any better than One Direction or Justin Bieber, or Jason DeRulo or Taylor Swift, etc., in fact, that's who today's Beatles are. The music and talent are easily secondary. 3. I love Rock music, and I enjoy their music, but I don't know all their names as some people say...nor is their talent outstanding as for example Deep Purple, Black Sabbath, Led Zeppelin, Guns & Roses, Iron Maiden, Pearl Jam, Rush are/were. Apart from Rock, they are not better than Sade, Stevie Wonder, Elton John, maybe others. 4. They only say they were influenced by them to kiss the asses of their feeble fans, who are many. On the other hand, Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath influenced MANY hard rock and metal bands who actually became World Wide well known, selling the biggest stadiums of their times, from the 1970s through the mid 1990s, and even after this period hard rock and metal continue, even though with not as many listeners. The Beatles have NEVER come close. Their only major success was, as I said before, the same reason why Justin Bieber, One Direction, Jason DeRulo, etc., have become big names in pop music: pop culture mindlessness buys their music and concert tickets and THEY, the fans, make them number ones. I have had this conversation with Beatles fanatics before, and they can never ever win because the truth and realities are not what they stand on.

The Novelty Songs When you’re five or six years old, ‘Yellow Submarine’, ‘When I’m Sixty Four’, ‘Here Comes The Sun’ and the like are fantastic songs. In pretty much the same way as ‘Mary Had A Little Lamb’ is fantastic poetry. The fact is, though, that The Beatles novelty songs are, frankly, embarrassing. They’re generally awful music hall pastiche with - in far too many cases - the tone deaf Ringo singing. The Stones avoided this trap and thank God for that.

I saw the Beatles concert/event in 1964 at Indianapolis is on U tube. Wow It was amazing. There could not be a more excited crowd. The girls went crazy and were carried out on stretchers passed out. It changed my music over night. I started playing Premier R/R Drums. I was playing Pop and Jazz Trumpet. It was all great. Our talented band was playing album rock before we knew what album rock was. We and no others tried to play the Beatles. Nobody was good enough with trick equipment to play their world changing music and how they presented themselves. Why insult their new type of music. It speaks of class culture, the state of Liverpool and Britain 2 decades after the war, the cries of the young trying to find themselves and break out of their established roles in life. This film is about culture and politics, moral standards....and about how The Beatles changed all that like we never understood before. It zooms way, way out and shows us much more than the music.

I humbly say I'm one of the biggest Beatles fans in the world. My parents graciously bought me my own record player when I was 6 years old, and I listened to their Beatles albums over and over. Revolver is my favorite, but their three run peak of musical perfection in Rubber Soul - Revolver - Sgt. Pepper will never be equaled. My grandfather was friends with John Lennon for a couple of years, and I have some neat stories. Love is all you need. God bless!

Our parents in our home town of Portland Oregon turned on The Ed Sullivan Show that night in early February 1964. We had no idea what we're about to see. From hearing those first words sung, and their spectacular instrumental accompaniment from each of them, I could tell that this was something really special. [Even if my young age, the middle instrumental verse in the cover number they did Till There Was You with Paul McCartney inging. That middle verse was a short fill-in of guitar by George Harrison. Looking back in retrospect I now realize that their musical abilities were quite mature for their age. Harrison is seen playing diminished an augmented chords like almost jazz or Bossa Nova. Just a young man in America back then or even today at age 20, that can play sophisticated jazz guitar.] The Beatles names were flashed on the screen, our mother began to scream for John Lennon. I was nine and a half years of age then. The next day my brother and I went to the local record store and bought the first album, Meet The Beatles. After playing it on our small phonograph a few times in our bedroom, I decided to make cardboard mock guitars with kite string, so my brother and I could pretend like we were lip-syncing to the music. We invited a couple of other friends to do this with us. One of those friends later told his mother that I showed him how to play Beatles music on a cardboard guitar. She said she would get him a real guitar and send him to music school. He eventually quit high school early, and went to attend the New England Conservatory for Music in Boston. He became a great Blues and jazz guitar player here in Portland Oregon, and credits me today for getting him interested in playing guitar when we were about 10 years of age. [Now thinking of this today, I wonder if I invented lip-syncing...?] I told this story to the famous Aimee Mann on NPR's Talk of the Nation, when they commemorated the 40th anniversary of The Beatles Sergeant Pepper's album release. @@MitchHawkes An hour and 48 minutes is a pretty short time into which to condense the epic story of the Beatles . Take the Beatles Anthology 1-3 films as a comparison -- I think that this single film did a really good job of distilling the story down to a third of the size of those. It's a weird thing, though, and kind of mind-boggling to think about the fact that the Beatles' career itself was condensed in terms of time, but it was such a supernova of creativity and change that volumes and volumes have been written about it, films are still made about it, and they continue to be fascinating to this day, 60 years later. Time and space don't really exist when the Beatles are the subject.

The USA was still going through the shock and sorrow of losing JFK. The Beatles' sound was a healing experience which was sorely needed in America. My grandmother in Manchester said the world would never be the same because of the Beatles' music. Well-said, Gran! Countless thanks, Paul, John, George, and Ringo! To my mind (and ears) "Please Please Me" was an amazing amalgam of The Everly Brothers (vocally) Buddy Holly (guitar) and Eddie Cochran (lyrically and musically). I'll be 60 next year and apparently, like you, I grew up listening to (and loving) the Beatles music. While I'm certainly glad they had such phenomenal success- money is the last thing I consider when thinking about the Beatles. The music always comes first, the money, to me, is irrelevant. I don't know about you, but I was so young when I was first exposed to their music that my critical thought process hadn't formed yet- so there were very few Beatle songs that I didn't like, and I had and listened to all their albums, nearly equally, although I mostly consider their last albums progressively better than their earliest work. As a child, I'm pretty sure songs like Within You, Without You. and Tomorrow Never Knows were a bit too sophisticated for my 2 to 8 year old taste. But I can recall the first time I read and actually was able to comprehend the meaning of Georges lyrics for Within. Long before I had taken any acid and had my mind expand- i remember realizing what a beautiful concept he was describing,and I've loved that song ever since. A boring song became a great song just like that. If you have any memories, feel free, I'll read them. Working graveyard shift at a motel front office at the moment. 3 days part time work pays my rent, and the possibility of danger keeps me sharp and on my toes. Peace.

@@dionmcgee5610 I was four when they played on the Ed Sullivan show, I don't remember it, I don't even know if we watched it, I was probably in bed, haha. Somewhere along the line, I connected with them. I don't even know when. It may have been just hearing them on the radio as a four and five year old, or seeing the Beatle cartoon on Saturday mornings occasionally while watching Casper the Friendly Ghost. An older cousin brought over the Help Album, the Capitol version of course, and played it, but I don't remember what I thought, but I was definitely aware by then that the Beatles were a big deal and were very famous. My sister had a copy of Rubber Soul and that kind of sealed the deal, particulary the song In My Life. I don't consider myself a first generation fan, but I'm thankful that they existed during my lifetime. I've read many of the books about them, collected their records and seen Paul and Ringo play live. It's been a fun journey. I hope to go to Liverpool and London and see the sites they made famous.

The Beatles set the bar for creative growth for a musical act...each album was a leap forward into uncharted original territory... to go from Love Me Do to I am the Walrus in 4 years is mind boggling ...and no band has had near the far reaching cultural and political impact the Fabs had...but their undeniable genius talent as song writers and composers aside the Beatles also had that chemistry magic that is very near impossible to get with 4 different people and that the beatles themselves never had with anyone else they played with in their solo careers - and while solo they still made some excellent music together there was just that magic that would happen when the 4 of them played together that elevated them above the competition....and when you realize that they did all that while in their 20s is absolutely astounding.

From the time I saw that first appearance on the Ed Sullivan show through today, I look back and still can't believe the newness of the music that I still feel today whenever I hear a Beatles song, the volume of music and the quality of that music. You can watch a thousand documentaries, but unless you were there in the time watching it, experiencing it, and living it, you can never truly understand the immense talent the Beatles possess. One particular thing that amazes me is that they had 4 or 5 songs at the top of the charts at the same time. The Beatles stand with the great composes of classical music as well as those of modern era. I don't believe we will ever see anything like it again.

I was only 9 when the Beatles first came to the US and we already knew from the radio that there simply was no other band with a comparable sound---from the guitars to the back-beat and of course vocal harmonies and Paul's deep bass in perfect synch with Ringo. My Dad said "they won't last 6 months" but we had the last laugh and he even began to like their later tunes.

I didn’t start getting into the Beatles til my early 20’s, I’m 41 now, but now that I’m older, know mostly every song they’ve ever wrote and heard ‘em all a hundred times, but I like watching the documentaries just as much cuz it’s really a story about history, some of the few storylines we all know happened 100%, unlike most the history we’re all taught in the indoctrination camps we put our kids in, myself included, but at least mine are in Private School. Which is why I can connect a little bit with Baby Boomers and Gen X. A lot of people back in the day at least started at Private or Catholic schools, wearing 2-3 piece suits and a tie. But the Beatles really were the catalyst, if not Elvis, to open the minds of many people… some would say it wasn’t for the better, but you can’t ever take away that they’ll most likely always be the greatest band in the history of music. Imagine if we got 20-30 of the Beatles… 🤔 just, “IMAGINE.” 😎✌🏼🤘🏼

I was in grade school when Beatlemania happened. I’m in my late 60s now and I haven’t seen anything that has ever come close to what happened back then. Don’t think we ever will.

@6catalina0 WTF, which culture created Rock&Rock in the first place. The first songs the beatles Sang was black American songs, which white radio stations would not play. That elevated the beatles, but they could not get that American sound because their musician skills were still novice so hence the beatles sound, which was basic.

The Novelty Songs When you’re five or six years old, ‘Yellow Submarine’, ‘When I’m Sixty Four’, ‘Here Comes The Sun’ and the like are fantastic songs. In pretty much the same way as ‘Mary Had A Little Lamb’ is fantastic poetry. The fact is, though, that The Beatles novelty songs are, frankly, embarrassing. They’re generally awful music hall pastiche with - in far too many cases - the tone deaf Ringo singing. The Stones avoided this trap and thank God for that.

A comprehensive documentary. In retrospect, the way the four young men met and grew progressively more influential is almost mystical. Brian Epstein becoming their manager, George Martin their producer, every aspect of the Beatles' story is touched by magical meetings. The decision to stop performing live and use the studio as a creative force was perfect.

It's incredible how much more we are still learning about the Beatles. George and especially Paul rarely said anything about being raised in Catholic homes. Not too popular in UK where plenty of my and plenty of other people's ancestors were put to death for being Catholic. George and Paul met at a Catholic boy's school.

I grew up on this and I recall seeing the 1st live broadcast of The Beatles, in Black and White, this band changed my life! I wanted to become an astronaut, then I wanted to BE RINGO! I went to the music store and bought drumsticks! I still Play the drums at age 66! Then this vid, (Brought back so many memories) reminded me that as a young boy, Richard Nixon drove through my home town and I shook his hand! A few years later, he resigned. I was glad he did! BUt anyway, this was a really great documentary! SO glad I watched it!

I was Invested in the documentary and reached about 50 minutes in when the song Girl was featured. I know all the Beatles music but this song hit me as ifI'd never heard it before. I had to stop and find a recording of the song. It's stunning. So beautiful, the lyrics, John's vocal, the harmonies, it's just perfection and yet it's a lesser Beatles song. (Reminds me of Because which is another lesser known song that has incredible harmonies.( They created so many astounding tracks...

The lesser known Beatles tracks are often the greatest Beatles tracks. “Because” is a masterpiece, “Girl” is perfection, so many more gems that are often greater in many ways than the singles

I'm 29 years old. My dad was born in 1956. As a young child I grew up listening to nothing but The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, and every other band from those times and even some you've probably never heard of. Lucky for me my dad had a wide range of taste in music. I was spoiled. But as a young boy going into my teen years I couldn't appreciate any of it. Now as I've got some years under my belt that's all I listen to. I couldn't tell you a single thing about music today. Literally. Not a single thing. But ask me about a song from almost 60 years ago and I'll tell you the name of the band and who the drummers mom is.

I was rig 1! It was a total honor being on this! Thank you for the 3 out of 5 Beards. To answer a few questions: The bag was actually an e-bow, I was offered all of those maestro pedals for a crazy good price form a buddy who liquidated all of his gear, hardcore zen is a book about a punk rocker who found himself becoming a Buddhist monk, the patch cables? No excuse. Limited space, comic books are cool. Great series and I’m super proud to be here!
