@@randallreid424 The Saxophone solo in jungle land was beautiful and it sounds great at the end of Thunder Road and on Meeting across the River. I also like the sax the end of Dancing in the Dark but it doesn't fit on most of his other songs. Born to Run should've remained a guitar driven song. Had it, it would've been the greatest rock song of all time but the sax hums through it and that solo screws it up. Darlington County was a country song and he jammed one into that song even though it doesn't even match that style of music. It did fit the end of Cadillac Ranch and I'm going Down. I think a sax solo on Streets of Fire and the Promised Land were better suited than the one they racked onto Badlands. I think he just way over did the Saxophone in general. I have a version of the song Born to Run I made from instrumental outakes without the Saxophone and it is the greatest song I've ever heard.

There's no comparison. Why does Robert try? These music critics can kiss my tush. They never really describe anything, it's all an in-joke to them, making these meaningless blanket criticisms. Springsteen, Simon, Dylan. All just shockingly good.

Totally agree. Usually these pedantic scholars don´t even distinguish a guitar from a tambourine. They speak a lot from the otside and by ear. So they have to compose dark statements almost unreachable for us mere mortals...even for the musicians themselves who usually laugh out loud about all those brainy interpretations of the songs composed out of sleepless nights, broken relationships, doubts and even depression.

Several Facts about Bruce Springsteen. 1. He's not that dynamic of a guitarist. Most of his music tends to be basic guitar work and he's used about 20 chord variations in total since his first Album in 1972. 2. Born to Run was NOT the smash hit album that his fans like to remember it being. It barely sold 1 million copies in it's first year, barely enough for Columbia not to drop him from their label. In fact. Some considered it falling short of sells expectations given the publicity and marketing campaign surrounding it. 3. Darkness on the Edge of Town was his last innovative album that doesn't sound like the 3rd CD of The River. 4. Springsteen received his first Grammy Nomination in 1981 for best male Vocals on The River but lost out to Rick Springfield... Oddly enough. 5. The River was actually when Springsteen mania began and when his fanbase expanded Nationwide and in Europe and elsewhere. Prior to that Album, Springsteen was simply a fringe artist who's fanbase was centered between New York, Boston, Philadelphia and to some degree, Chicago. Basically the area within 500 miles of New Jersey. 6. In order to get Columbia to agree to release Nebraska, Springsteen promised record executives that it's follow-up would repeat the sells of The River and produce a top 10 hit. Very little was spent by Columbia to promote what was seen as a waste of money by the label. Nebraska has barely sold 1.5 million copies since it was released. 7. Born in the U.S.A did not debut at #1 on the billboard album charts. It entered at #9 on the charts and actually under sold the River in it's first week. The following week it climbed to #4 barely selling better than The River in it's second week and actually looked like a flop until Dancing in the Dark hit the top 5 singles charts and slung Born in the USA into the top spot for 4 weeks but then dropped to #2 behind Prince's Purple Rain album which stayed at the top spot for the rest of 1984. Born in the USA would then reclaim the top spot in Jan of 1985 for 3 weeks and remain on the charts a total of 84 weeks, beating out both Thriller and Purple Rain for length of time on the billboard album charts. Hence why it out sold Purple Rain (15 million copies to 13 million) even though Purple Rain was the dominant album of 1984. 8. The Born in the USA world tour was the first to gross more than 90 million dollars and actually broke the record for most attended event in history until Michael Jackson a Bad tour between 1987 and 1989. 9. Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band Live 75/85 was Springsteen's first album to debute at #1. It sold 3 million total units and 13.5 million copies. A record breaker at the time. Technically it is his second highest selling album and 5th highest selling album of the 1980s. Born in the USA is the 3rd highest selling album of that decade. The River it 28th. 10. Tunnel of Love was a disappointment for Columbia. It failed to debute at #1 and took over a month to get to the top of the charts and only remained there for a single week. This dispite the fact, Brilliant Disguise was a top 5 hit. 11. All totalled Springsteen is probably the biggest rock star in history ... In terms or album sells and tickets sold ...and is the only recording artist to outdo Michael Jackson in the 1980s. Michael Jackson sold just 4 million more albums than Springsteen in that decade but Springsteen sold twice as many tickets. So Springsteen narrowly outsold Michael Jackson and everyone else during that era. 12. More albums were sold between 1982 and 1986 than in any 4 year period before or since. I'm fact. More albums were sold in that four years than in the rest of the 1980s put together. Half of all albums sold during that 4 year period was from Michael Jackson, Bruce Springsteen, Prince and Maddona. Note. I'm not exactly a fan. His music was and is before my time but I love the history of pop culture since it's rise in the Jazz Age and the history of popular music. Personally, I prefer the far more complex guitar style of Rick Springfield and consider him as the most underated artist of that era. Sorry but Jesse's Girl has a cross generational appeal in a way none of Springsteen's have. In fact, outside of Born in the USA, very few Americans under 50 are all that familiar with Springsteen or his music and those that are, it has very little, if any appeal to them. I personally think he over uses the saxophone in songs and places it doesn't belong and has too many instruments playing at once they drown out each other... Which is why I rate Darkness on the Edge of Town as his best album. Sparse sax solos (Badlands and Prove it All Night) and a more stripped down sound and great vocals. Lucky Town is also a great but very underrated album but that fake Southern accent he started using on The River is hard to listen to.

Lucky town is indeed underrated. A solid rock album about springsteen being happily married. Sad nobody wants that.

I watched this entire documentary, and I just can't leave alone the comments of Larry David Smith who wrote a book about Bruce. And I'll say this directly to him. Sir, I sincerely believe that your personal opinions about Bruce and his music are incredibly inaccurate! It's almost as if you are disagreeing with the messages that most people who follow Bruce understand as true. I'll go chronologically as per the documentary. Let's start quickly with the "4 Mindless Party Songs"? What? Then, "Independence Day", and no ambition?? Really? That's the questions your looking for the answers to in this song? In Mansion on the Hill, he is not sitting in a car in the woods staring down into someone's house, stalking a family because of jealousy, self-pity, or bitterness. He is admiring the very expensive and glamorous "Mansion" from a distance, reflecting on the fact that a common working man would only dream of acquiring such a house. In Atlantic City, he not looking for a cheap way of making money because he's lazy and a slacker, he's telling the story of a person who has worked his whole life, and still can't find any way to get ahead, with bills pilling up, and no other way to rectify his very desperate situation. You describe "Used Cars" literally!! My man, your starting to worry me that you can't see the irony in the song, and can't see the metaphor of a "Used Car" compared to hitting the lottery and never owning a used car again? Scarier yet, is that YOU ACTUALLY WROTE, AND GOT PUBLISHED A BOOK ABOUT BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN!!! But the kicker, and the point where I realized that you sir, are not a smart person, and furthermore, have absolutely no no business writing about about Bruce Springsteen, Superman, or the Lucky Charms guy!!! "These people never talk about getting an a job, an education, saving money, or doing anything industrious to get things". "They think the can go to a casino and win big, they can win the lottery, they can do a litle favor for a friend"?? ARE YOU KIDDING ME??? Sir, youare truly talks out your ass, just to hear yourself speak. It's amazing to me that someone would actually use your babble on an actually 45 minute documentary, when you CLEARLY do not have a clue what you are talking about!! WOW!! Unbelievable!

Way before my time but I'm interested in the pop culture of the pre internet era in the 70s and 80s. My question is just how big was he after Born to Run and before Born in the USA compared to other artist of that era? I personally like his work before his 1980 The River Album. Since then all his music sounds like an extension of The River with only a few exceptions. I think he should do a metal album or something exotic and get away from his usual sound for a change. Streets of Philadelphia was one of the rare occasion he broke from that sound since Darkness on the Edge of Town. Also Born to Run was a great album too but he overused the Saxophone on that album and the song.

Bruce addresses big important topics. His topics are his strength. But lyrically, in terms of diction, lexicon, and sheer linguistic creativity, he’s not a patch on Dylan. Not even remotely close. Nor is he a patch on Joni Mitchell or Paul Simon. And musically is incredibly simple and safe. Springsteen is over rated.

Over the years I’ve developed problems with Dylan. I concede he was adept linguistically and I do absolutely recognize him as a catalyst- along with the Beatles he was THE catalyst for music transforming from just entertainment to a meaningful, literary art form of the Sixties. But if you read biographies of Dylan he was a prolific dissembler. In his early NYC “shabby hobo” repertoire he made up all this bs about riding the rails in the heartland - which he didn’t. He stole what is often considered his greatest lyric (“when you’re lost in the rain in Juarez and it’s Easter time too”) from his friend Bobby Neuwirth. He trashed Joan after she did a lot to vet him at the folk festivals. And as my dad used to say: how can you listen to a guy talk about “truth” who changed his name? So, even though I genuinely like his songs, his vocal stylings and his encyclopedic knowledge of the American songbook I have issues with him. Toward your claim that Springsteen is not a patch on Dylan’s writing I would counter that. Much of Dylan’s writing, especially from his classic period up to Blonde on Blonde is couched in poetic symbolism that EVOKES meaning but doesn’t concretely identify meaning. My Back Pages would be a perfect example of the many to choose from. I realize this sacrosanct statement will not be popular to Dylan disciples and certainly his zealots. Springsteen on the other hand documented a real demographic with concrete language that is not obscured in symbolist “poetry”. Personally I don’t think Springsteen’s writing is poetic at all though his fans do, possibly because they don’t understand the difference between lyrics and poetry. It has its poetic aspects but it is not poetry per se. But it is great documentary and “lived” as is pointed out in the video. As far as I’m concerned Springsteen offers a vastly more genuine, heartfelt and frankly gracious legacy to us than Dylan ever did even if Like A Rolling Stone is one of the most kick ass songs ever recorded and Sara on of the most gut wrenching. Sorry for the length but every word was needed to get out this idea that’s been gestating for years and now has been said. As for Joni, is she a better writer than Springsteen? I don’t think she has the talents of Dylan but it’s the same basic scenario. Her poetical writing has a different focus than Springsteen. I wouldn’t say it’s “better”. As a writer I don’t see Simon as peer to any of the aforementioned. Great tunes and vox. Lyrics B+. This is out of the wheelhouse of this group of singer/ songwriters but if you want to delve into highly literate rock lyrics check out Silent Corner and the Empty Stage by Peter Hammill. Now that’s depth.

These faces on this vid are clueless about music...70s 80s produced great rock...Neil Young Elton John Led Zepplin...U2 Guns n Rose's Billy Idol Duran Duran Peter Gabriel...Fleetwood Eagles Journey...the list goes on and on...I got to turn this off....

The Boss. I personally can't stand this guy's music (although there are a couple of bangers), but there's no denying he could write a tune like nothing. If you were born in the 80s, there's a good chance it was Bruce that got your Mama's blood flowing and those knickers wanting to come off for your conception

Kevin, when you start bleeting about sheep (like actual sheep..the Irony is delicious btw) anything you've said before loses any relevance you might've had. At least you don't have to worry there, because nothing you say is of any consequence. Awh. Baaaah.

I love his rockin stuff, but his overdone hoarse speak-for-Americans balladeering-eh. To me, whoever I am-guess I'm another American w/an opinion (and the reason this opinion is so obnoxious is probably that I grew up in obligatorily humorously argumentative Manhattan)-it's the same bullshite every time; just doesn't come across, which means doesn't "feel" for the listener, true at all. Poor guy tries too hard to sound "real", and you know what that means: you just hear the trying, which is very trying. Sorry, but he ain't Dylan, and he ain't Otis (Redding) doing These Arms Of Mine.

@@ajo3085 Springsteen IS a great writer, but still just an average musician. There is a difference. Think Roger Waters of Pink Floyd. Great writer, but without Gilmour, he is an average musician.
@ajo30853 жыл бұрын
@@OldFatGuy The guy built his early reputation as a guitar player, not as a singer or writer, and while no one would ever describe his guitar or piano playing as virtuosic, if he's only an "average" musician then the "below average" category must include 85% of the people who have ever plugged in or sat down at a keyboard.
