Capacitors 101. For all the newbies, hell that probably includes me. Say you have a sweet ride, you're not going to run it through the carwash. You do it yourself. Now you got the car all soapy and sudsy. You go to use the water hose to rinse it off but the water pressure is terrible. Like you're trying to rinse off your car with a bad showerhead. What do you do, you grab an empty bucket and let it fill with the water all the way to the top. You take that water bucket and splash down the roof with one or two big passes just blasting the soapy water away. That's kinda how a capacitor works. Your capacitor is a lifeless bucket your battery is constantly filling up with water and the water overflows out the top to your amplifiers keeping them going. At one point your amplifier says we gonna need a shitload of water to keep this bass note flowing. Cool. BASS note is gonna hit hard. The capacitor water is just sucked out of it for that note. Almost have the bucket is gone. But the water keeps flowin into it and none of the other systems, headllights, leds, cell phone charger, ac blower motor, They're all drinking from the same hose too but since the capacitor was full of water, it was able to dish it out and nobody else new it cause it had some to spare.

Coming from someone who just hooked this same thing up yesterday, you are supposed to charge it up until the LED quits flashing, as per the instructions that came in the packaging. If you become impatient and don't want to hold it (it only takes about 30 seconds to a minute), then just wrap one end of the resister to the positive terminal of the cap, and the other end to the positive cable coming from the battery. I just let it sit for a minute while I went back inside to take care of something really fast. Wasn't worried about draining my battery down too far by accident, since I was using my car audio battery which I have isolated from the starting battery when the vehicle is off. Otherwise, I really like how your install looks. Much cleaner than my own. lol.

Caps are only good for quick slaps but as soon as a long bass note comes up it does not have time to charge back up then it also becomes a load to the electrical system. That's why is wise to upgrade the alternator or add a battery

These are the facts right here...well said. My 425 amp alternator arrives next week (dedicated to stereo, 2 alt set up 😁 1 battery yellow top😉 no caps. The long bass note is exactly what happens, and then the caps never catch up....👍

Yep - The only Real way to have Actual Power is for the Power to Already BE THERE ... Get yourself a Realistic Alternator, Upgrade that Battery and Every Cable you've got under your Hood and There Ya Go! That Capacitor is intended only for sudden Quick Drops (if any) in Voltage. It is NOT a Regulator, it's only a Buffer. It's meant to activate only when Voltage drops below a certain Threshold. A Capacitor is NOT an Alternator "alternative".

I am new to using a capacitor. My question was going to be will the lcd screen go off and always pull voltage when the battery is connected. But I see you say it will go to “sleep” and the screen will go off. Also after I charged mine within a few seconds it started discharging and then says low. Does it discharge that quick once I disconnect the diode from charging?

06:00 I'd do it the other way around, lightly grip the wire in the vise, and leave the terminal out to solder; this way the plastic will not get burned as much, *AND* the terminal will heat up faster and more uniformely, since the vise won't be robbing the heat. At least, grab the terminal by the very tip of the ring, that works too.

I think you can short your circuit if you don't charge it. Empty capacitors act as short circuits in the first milliseconds when you connect it to the power supply and could burn your circuit breakers or other electrics that are in that circuit and have no breakers. Correct me if I'm wrong.

Purchased a used tiny ass 02 Toyota echo back in 2014 and I ran that thing to almost 300,000 and sold it to someone else. I moved on up to an 08 Toyota Avalon and WOW! Only things I've had to repair on them were alternators and an O2 sensor or two. Oh and a intake manifold gasket on the echo. Don't get me started on these 2.4 Buicks. They consume more oil than a diesel engine runaway.

Goku Velasco if you have to ask, I’m assuming you’re not getting an amp that can put out anywhere near 4000w or even 3000w. But if you’re getting an amp that can actually do that kind of power, you’ll need a better alternator at the very least. Invest in a “Big 3” upgrade and a higher output alternator. That kind of power will require true 1/0 wire, OFC if you want to avoid having your car burn to the ground.

JR GRIFFIN Hook up your positive cable from battery to the Cap and run another positive cable from cap to amp then have two negative cables as short as possible in length and grounded to two separate areas of the car if possible, one negative cable from the car will run to you capacitor and the Second negative cable from the car will run to your amp. In theory your amplifier and your capacitor will be running on two completely separate grounds. When done, your capacitor should have two positive wires on it and only one negative wire going to it. That's how I've always hook mine up with no problems.

Need a separate ground for the capacitor, #1 and 2nd, if you don't have at least the big 3 done, then this is almost a futile effort. I've used plenty of 2 farad caps, without the big 3 on 1500 rms and had dimming, Hit up the big 3 upgrade and dimming was gone. Your electrical system (charging) as a whole is only as good as the smallest wire. You can run 6 feet of 0 ga wire then connect it to 2 inches of 8 ga wire then run another 6 feet of 0 ga wire and you will essentially be running on 8 ga wire power. that's just how electricity works. So without the big 3, the battery will almost ALWAYS suck more juice then it can get. The stock wires in your charging system on your car are highly inefficient, but they are also not taking into consideration that you will need all that power for an amp. In my personal experience I've went from 12.3 volts to 13.8 volts just from the big 3 ran with 0 ga ofc . If you are going to install a system with a cap, then it's important to do the big 3 always, unless you are running a 300 watt rms amp and a 300 watt rms sub. At that point everything will be fine, usually.

Quick important question! When its already charged hooked up to your system and youre just doing an amp swap, obv. You disconnect main power, but do i discharge the capcitor too? Or will i be able to disconnect my old amp, swap new one with connections, and then main power to cap? Really curious dont want to kill myself lmao

You always want to discharge any capacitor before messing with it. A/C technicians when discharging a condenser capacitor take a screwdriver with a rubber or plastic handle and tap the screwdriver on the two leads creating a spark until it sparks no more, then test it with a multimeter to make sure there's no voltage. Then and only then is it safe to mess with a capacitor. A car capacitor runs off 12v DC voltage. (Direct current). Direct current is not as dangerous as a household capacitor which runs off AC voltage (alternating current). AC voltage can kill you.

That's total opposite of what I was told. Thought to charge it to as close to 12 volts as possible then hook it up

just make sure its strong enough for your amp

I carefully drilled holes in my amp and mounted mine on my amp so it looks very clean and my jumpers from the capacitor to the amp are only 3 inches

I knew these comments were gonna be the old alt vs batt vs cap. Smart bassheads use all 3 in combination. Hell I'm using 3 batts, high output alt, and a 5 cap bank just for one 3k amp.

Will it still be fine?

Using stock alternator+stock battery+ 800amp capacitor + 3k rms amp? Also using true ofc 2/0 gauge wire

I would not allow this guy anywhere near anything electric until he figures out and understands the difference between a resistor and a diode.

Something I have not be able to find is how to determine if a capacitor is good anymore.. would anyone have info on how to test to see if a cap has gone bad?

I have this same cap 30$ at walmart..

If the cap is bad you get the dimming headlights back. If the cap with even pass the power through it, sometimes it will go up and the power stops at the cap. In other words you will have power to the cap, but not at the amp.
