I'm enjoying this as I write sales proposals and update spreadsheets. At the very least, I can picture myself hunched over a customs house desk in the first bite of winter, quill clutched between my cramping fingers, painstakingly scribing figures into a ledger by the guttering candlelight, and be grateful for my cushioned office chair and climate-controlled house.

If I am not mistaken, this could be partly a view over the formal gallow field on the right part of the painting in the northern part of Amsterdam. Out of use in the 1890's, but still sinister. A place with mixed feelings. During the 17th century many people went there to the tavern there (on the right side of the painting with the lights burning behind the windows?) to have a drink and view over the dead. Often on sundays, as a kind of leisure trip. I am not sure if this is that field depicted here, but the music somehow fits for that place, during a winter.
