Hi David! I really enjoy your videos. I've watched most of them. I really got a kick out of you speaking Dutch and sranang tongo. I'm also from Suriname, but lives in the USA. I even bought your hot sauce and gave it to my friend as a gift, since I can't eat spicy foods, but I was so proud to know that it was made by a Surinamese company. Looking forward to your next visit to Suriname. Please continue what your doing! Blessings!

Herring is extremely Dutch beyond food. It was an important nutrient in Northern Europe in the Middle Ages and the Dutch discovered how it could be conserved by leaving only the pancreas in and brining it in the 14th century. They started on ship processing of the herring and soon took over the almost the entire herring trade and former important herring cities like Lübeck in Germany lost relevance. It helped other trade growing and when the Dutch industrialized shipbuilding with the help of windmills they started dominating all European trade by sea. So it doesn't get much Dutcher than herring. They often get served with a tiny Dutch flag and the first catch of the year arriving is called 'vlaggetjesdag' or little flag day because of the national flags on the boats.

How you know you are in Amsterdam? They make the Herring idiotproof to eat. No "dangling the fish and sliding it down the hatch causing tourists to choke" there. It is actually known in the rest of the country as "Haring op Amsterdamse wijze" (Herring the Amsterdam way). If you are a tourist and want to try the herring but don't really need that photo op, ask for the Amsterdam way regardless where you are in the Netherlands. Fishmongers will understand and cut up your herring for you. This way you can actually enjoy your Herring instead of potentially picking it up from the ground. As for Fries, I think even most Dutch will agree that Flemish Fries (not "Belgian fries", there is no such thing_ are superior, Dutch version would be either Grandma or Grandpa fires (Oma/Opa Frieten) that comes close to that. Other food things the Flemish are superior at are Chocolate, Waffels (except the stroopwaffel version of course) and Mussels. Probably beer as well although the Dutch also have some awesome great beers. The Dutch name of Cod is Bakeljauw, in Surinam it is Bakkeljauw or Klipvis, also known as Bacalhau in Portugal and Bacalao in Norway. a Dried version is also known as Stokvis (stickfish) I was watching and thinking "I know that man, I know that voice" about your host, then I heard his last name and went OF COURSE.... HOWARD! I see out of the corner of my eye you have a video in my side feed where you go to Utrecht, that is my city so will be viewing that next.
@goednieuwskrantje-nl9 ай бұрын
I would recommend to not get Indonesian and Chinese food in the biggest cities, the best tasting ones are in smaller cities, believe it or not, they taste better and they are more affordable, that's a much bigger win-win. The Chinese Surinamese toko restaurant in this video on the other hand is probably one of the best though, so it's basically kind of complicated to find the best ones from everywhere. My guess is though that this one was not in the center of the city but more outside of the center.
@goednieuwskrantje-nl9 ай бұрын
Also: There is no best when it comes to Dutch or Belgian fries, they are different enough to be their own thing and they are both very good in their own ways.

He already went to Suriname. And Surinamese folks, especially the first-generation in the Netherlands, always cook traditional dishes, exactly like they learned from their elders back home. So, no need for lies here. Skip the takeaways and restaurants and head straight for a home-cooked Surinamese meal made by a Surinamese family. That's where the real deal is.
