I guess it is all in the timing. My first visit to A-dam was during the "Little Ice Age" winter of 1962-63. On December 26, two buddies and I drove through a snowstorm from our base in Germany to finally slide to a stop next to a frozen canal at day's end. The car was snowed in for the next two days, and I guess the other tourists were snowed out. We very nearly had the city to ourselves, and to the locals who were mostly concerned with digging out and going to get groceries. Of course the bars, restaurants, and entertainment district (ahem) were open and eager for business. My god, what a time we had. Almost sixty years later, the memory warms my ancient soul. Love that city.
