🕹️ #1 - "DESTRUCTO!" (aka "The Island Of Dr Destructo")
As chosen and voted for by the Amstream community! For the last 3 years on our live streams we've been searching for those Amstrad games that are great but very rarely get seen or spoken about - and deserve some love! Digging up buried treasure and finding those hidden gems of CPC gaming! All of them have been viewer suggestions, it's then been played and reviewed - then voted on in a live poll as to whether it should be awarded the coveted 'hidden gem' status or not. Those games that achieved this will now start appearing in these semi-regular byte sized videos in-between my usual longplay & review content!
And first up is the absolutely addictive and definitely dazzling ... DESTRUCTO! Also known as The Island Of Doctor Destructo. An all time Amstrad classic, that even within CPC circles is still either relatively unknown or just simply forgotten about. Let's find out why it's such a gem and the reason I made it the first one to start off this new series... 👊

Awesome! Just casually going from a legend in the Amstrad scene (Shinobi, Double Dragon I & II, etc) and then goes and ports one of the best CPC games to the rival C64 like it's nothing! 😂 Seriously though, nice job - I like the bullet spray intro before the start of the game which is a new addition. Some nice little jingles of music too.

Believe it or not, I had never heard of this game! Was it only released in the UK? So for me, it's truly a *hidden* gem. Thank you very much Xyphoe for making me discover it. I'm looking forward to the next episodes of this new series!

Merci Henri! I think it's rare that 'budget software' got released in France? I don't really know - this was from Mastertronic (on their "Bulldog" sub label) and sold for £2.99 on cassette in 1987. So in that year... did you ever see budget cassette software in the shops in France?

One of the last games, if not the last game I ever remember playing on my Amstrad before it was sent to the knackers yard to be replaced by the Master System. A highly enjoyable game, quite a unique experience for me and completely unforgettable.

A game i never saw reviewed, none of my friends had it, never saw an advert for it and I somehow got a copy from someone and it turned out to be one of the most maddenly addictive, fun and damn good games I have played. A true hidden gem that most people now know about !

Yea you saying you 'never saw reviewed' got me thinking in my old 'longplay & review' I might have said this never got reviewed in Amstrad Action... if I did then I was wrong, because I went digging further and it WAS reviewed but under the incorrect name of "Dr Destructo". It's in AA25 on page 47 and they rated it 77%. The 2nd opinion reviewer though absolutely loved it... wish he had reviewed the game instead!

One of the best for sure! And extra competitive because I believe the best player on the level for who scores the most gets awarded the bonus life! It gives me an idea to do a video of the 'best 2 player games on the Amstrad' at some point!

Seems more forgiving than other games with a similar gameplay mechanic. Will have to try it.

The game eases you in for a few levels and plenty of lives, but by ... I dunno ... level 6 or 7 it starts getting pretty tough! Nice difficulty curve that doesn't put you off at the start... DAMNIT that's really something I should have mentioned in the video now!! 🤦‍♂️😆

i remember encountering this game on one those c90 tapes that someone had pirated a whole load of games on. on the inlay you'd have the name of the games and their counter numbers. And you'd go through them hoping that a) there was something worth playing b) the game would actually load. this was one of the rare occasions where a and b were actually met. i flipping loved this game, one of the games that actually played to the CPC's strengths. No crappy monochrome graphics here! And no scrolling so the game doesnt move at an arthritic pace.

Nice memories mate! Given this one was £1.99 and even cheaper than most other budget games (£2.99 standard price at the time) if I'd been given a dodgy copy I would have gone and bought a legit one it's that good and worth owning for real! (I'm not saying YOU should have done, I'm just saying I would have because I love it so much!)

don't think I ever saw this in the shops, mind you most of my games were bought from the cornershop up the road with very rare trips to town. Also, rewarding the developers with my hard earned wasn't really a consideration for a poor 12 year old.

@@mashk yea me too, I had to wait a long long time before I got pocket money that could afford to get my own games with my own money, otherwise I was relying on Xmas and birthday presents (and them being good!) and it was long barren wait for many months inbetween!!
