Longplay and review for "Kung-Fu Master" on the Amstrad CPC!
Kung Fu Master (the arcade coin-op) was the grand daddy of all scrolling beat 'em up brawlers! It practically invented the genre and also went on to bizarrely spawn two of gaming's biggest franchises (discussed in the video). Now we find out how this classic coin-op converted to the Amstrad CPC - does it still hold up and kick ass today? Let's enter the Devil's Temple...

Unbelievable that you can play through every level twice on one life!! I couldn't even get to level 4 back in the day :/ Thanks for the excellent pleythrough!

Yea I perhaps should have mentioned more how difficult the game is... but I think that's down to the control lag. Once you get the timing and rhythm down it's not too bad, the other thing is to kick or punch earlier than you think you have to do against standard enemies.

Kung-Fu Master is for me a classic cpc game. Really not easy to play, but makes real fun. Thanks for sharing 🙂

Yep, despite the control lag - once you adjust to it and start your hits on normal enemies earlier than you think, it starts becoming fun for me :)

I really liked this one, it reminds me of that great era when we were always looking for the next karate or Kung fu based game, and/or the next arcade conversion we were going to be disappointed with, and this one did pretty great on both fronts !

Yea this was pretty decent given the year - 1986 - there wasn't many other great arcade conversions around that time.

Pressing space bar after killing someone would give you 100 extra points if I remember correctly. As a kid, I was so excited to have worked this out, that I wrote to Computing With The Amstrad magazine to tell them!

Spectrum has another version (homebrew) called Mr Kung Fu and its class, also the C64 version if you hold down shift and G whilst facing left you get a gun

Yea I watched it in full (along with Game Of Death) before doing this review - great really fun movie. Maybe not one of Jackie Chan's best, but that fight he has at the end is one of the best!
@Texy88
@Texy88 Жыл бұрын
“Wheels on Meals” is more of a Sammo Hung film than a Jackie Chan one even though the latter stars in it (which also explains the lack of outtakes). Sammo certainly knows how to choreograph powerful on-screen fights and Jackie always looked his very best as an on-screen martial artist whenever Sammo choreographed him. Yuen Biao (the other member of the main trio) had awesome kicking and gymnastic ability back in his prime.

Funny how on this one it’s the Amstrad version that actually scrolls and the Speccy version that doesn’t. Usually the other way around ! :)
@Xyphoe
@Xyphoe Жыл бұрын
Yea at least they had a separate team working on a version specifically for the Amstrad, rather than porting over the Speccy code. The Spectrum should have done a LOT better here, but there is a modern remake for the Speccy out there now.

Ooohhhh now this one my all time favourites love this game great looking at the history here Emperor @Xyphoe 🎖 Yes i absolute love Bruce Lee very heavy inspired by an elements of Jackie Chan. Think the Amstrad version here very close to the arcade original an yeah i remember interesting has lifts instead of the stars, and oh was from one my favourite publishers on Amstrad Mastertronic oh awesome😊😊 On this version very good all round animations look smooth just shame not able to have in game music that only thing missing sadly would of been so much better, but still an ok conversion 💎💎💎💎💎 This version i give it 8 out 10

I think adding the music would make such a difference here, I might have rated it higher then - and it's only a short simple loop to do, not sure why they didn't do it.

Not a bad port at all altough the scroll and the control response should be better.Thanks for the video

Thank you! The scrolling is 'ok' IMO and I can overlook that, but the control lag/response is a huge issue and I can't overlook that!

'Jimmy' is most likely to be James Edward Cosby, not Jim Bagley. 'Steve' may be Steve Murphy rather than Steve Calvert, and 'Craig' is probably Craig Thornton. If you search for a video on KZbin titled 'Games That Push The Limits of The Amstrad CPC', there is a comment thread detailing James' involvement with _Kung-Fu Master_ and other games developed by Choice - and you've even posted comments in that thread! 😉
@Xyphoe
@Xyphoe Жыл бұрын
Heh, some of those eg Stevie, Craig were just best guesses. I'm going to bet money it's Steve Calvert given how the high score tables looks and he did Rambo which has a very similar one! The only things I can find for Steve Murphy on the Amstrad though is ALSO Rambo but it appears he was a graphics guy not a coder, and I think he's the one referred to as "Bodie" in the high score table because one of his aliases was 'Spod The Bod' on Rambo - www.mobygames.com/person/6424/steve-murphy/credits/ I've gone back and looked at that 'Games That Push The Limits of The Amstrad CPC' video and comments and saw that James did reply to me!! I didn't see that or get notified, but he says to get in touch on Facebook, so I just have done!
@CPCGameReviews
@CPCGameReviews Жыл бұрын
@@Xyphoe The Amstrad CPC credits for _Rambo_ on Mobygames suggest that 'Boadie' [sic] is a nickname for David Boatright. This all feels like real detective work! I hope James will get back to you.

The Spectrum version of “Kung-Fu Master” is an utter disgrace. There was no excuse for how bad that version turned out. Thank God that in 2018 someone did the game far better justice in the form of “Mister Kung-Fu”! It’s also worth noting that your footage of the Spectrum version must have been sped up by the emulator; in reality the game is quite a bit slower than that.
@Xyphoe
@Xyphoe Жыл бұрын
I didn't do any speeding up in the emulator, so am not sure - just watched a vid of a real hardware capture of the ZX Spectrum version and it looks like it's playing at the same speed of my recorded footage.
@Texy88
@Texy88 Жыл бұрын
Some emulators just play _Kung-Fu Master_ too quickly. On _Fuse_ it runs too quickly but on _Retro Virtual Machine 2_ it runs at the slower speed of the original.

@@Xyphoe Fair enough; maybe it's a common misconception! John Saxon & Jim Kelly wear a yellow costume during their fight scenes on the island (in Enter The Dragon), but Bruce Lee either wears his brown, white or the "topless" costume used as inspiration for the "Bruce Lee" computer game in 1984.
