Longplay and review for "Zaxx" on the Amstrad CPC!
I've always loved the arcade coin-op Zaxxon! And wished there was an official port and conversion to the Amstrad!! 😭 So in this video I go in search of what happened to the Amstrad port when every other computer and console bloody got one (spoiler... we nearly did....), I also go looking for the best Zaxxon clones on the Amstrad (another spoiler... it's our main feature and longplay - "Zaxx"!) but first we start off with a little history lesson and playthrough of the first loop of the classic coin-op that started it all - Zaxxon! However our main feature is of course the longplay and review of Chip's Zaxxon clone "ZAXX" and I think most of you will be fairly impressed...
I hope you enjoy this video, it's a little bit different in style to my usual longplays, and certainly was fun to make and put together!
"Zaxx" though, I think is surprisingly quite a hidden little gem for such a blatant rip-off and clone....

Maybe this was the Amsoft version. Though if U.S Gold were involved Choice would of coded it and it would of been cack.

Oh. The thought never crossed my mind........ but the same coder did do Grand Prix Rally II which Amsoft did pick up and release themselves! Although that was from Loriciels, this game was from Chip and Amsoft had no relationship with them. Who knows!! Maybe not though because there's a few things and sections that differ quite a bit from the arcade coin-op like the UFO's you have to shoot for fuel. And good point on the US Gold involvement and them using Choice.

@@Xyphoe interesting with coders link to Amsoft maybe the differences were added after to avoid any lawsuit from Sega. Though calling it Zaxx counters that.

Zaxxon is a great game. I remember being amazed by the isometric view, and the feelings of depth to the controls. Probably why I was drawn to Qabbalah on the CPC 😂

I’m sure Spy Hunter is on the Coin Op Hits compilation on Amstrad (also has Bionic Commando, Road Blasters & Thunderblade plus a few others). Do love Zaxxon and Super Zaxxon on my C64. The conversion is really good. The arcade game is an absolute classic that demands just one more go.

It is yea, Spy Hunter appeared on the Coin Op Hits compilation first (and then History In The Making I believe) before finally getting a solo release on the Kixx budget label. No full price release though.

@@Xyphoe Bit like the terrible version of Hard Drivin' on C64. They never gave it an original release it was that bad. Turned up on the TNT compilation and then later Hit Squad (must have been a joke that one!)

Shame about the deep space part where the lack of shadows makes lining up impossible, otherwise this looks like a decent clone. Cheers for the good vid Xyphoe 👍

Yea it needs the little cross hair and beep noise the arcade version has to let you know you're lined up with the enemy, at least the latter is very simple to do and would have made all the difference! Thanks mate!

We've been doing a 'Hidden Gems' series on the Amstreams (the live streams we do on a Friday) and we've found quite a lot so far, we will keep doing them and will eventually produce a few vids highlighting the best!

Yea me too! It took me by surprise, it's pretty good! Just a shame you can only fire one shot at a time, and the space sections you have no way of lining up your shots. It's perhaps also maybe a little too easy.

I had fun with Spy Hunter! If you forget it's meant to be a conversion and take it as a game in it's own right away from the licence, it's quite fun. And as for Zaxx, it's a decent clone for sure yea!

Watch this space for the next set of completely original titles: Pacm, Donkeyko and Spaceinvade. But, it's a competent version of Zaxxon, although the missing crosshair hurts the game, and the levels drag on for too long. Makes me curious what a modern conversion would look like.
