The Subaru BRAT, short for "Bi-drive Recreational All-terrain Transporter", known outside Canada and the United States as the 284 in the United Kingdom, Brumby in Australia, and Shifter, MV, or Targa in other markets, is a light duty, four-wheel drive coupé utility,[1][2] sold from 1978 to 1994. It was an export-only model, never being officially sold in Japan. Due to this, the BRAT became a popular grey import vehicle in Japan.
Developed in Japan in 1977 at the request of the President of Subaru of America, the BRAT was introduced to match the demand for small trucks in the USA, from Toyota, Nissan, and Mazda. Unlike these trucks, all BRATs had four-wheel drive, being developed from the existing Leone station wagon.[2]
It has other features such as an optional T-top split roof, a spring-loaded hidden door for a side step into the cargo bed, and a spare tire mounted under the hood. The spare tire necessitates an oval air intake breather.
When the Leone was redesigned in 1979 for the 1980 model year the BRAT continued with the original body until 1982.[1]
In 1987 imports to North America ceased, but exports to Europe, Australia, Latin America and New Zealand continued until 1994.
Due to truncating demand of pickup trucks since late 1970s as Japanese customers shifted to station wagons at that time, Subaru never considered marketing the BRAT in their home market.
Jumpseats[edit]
The USA and Canada's version also had carpeting and welded-in rear-facing jumpseats in the cargo area. These were a tariff-avoidance ploy,[3][4][5] with the plastic seats in the cargo bed allowing Subaru to classify the BRAT as a passenger car - charged only a 2.5%, compared to 25% tariff on light trucks due to Chicken tax. They were discontinued after the 1985 model year.
Drivetrain[edit]
All BRATs had four-wheel drive and the Subaru EA engine. Early models received the 1.6 litre EA-71 whereas 1981 and later models received a 1.8 litre EA-81 engine. 1983 and 1984 models could be purchased with an optional 94 hp (70 kW) turbochargedengine. Manual transmissions were standard on all models, and an automatic transmission was available on turbocharged BRATs. 1980 and earlier models had a single-range transfer case, while 1981 and later GL models had a dual range transfer case (DLs still had single range), and all turbocharged models were equipped with an automatic transmission with a single range, push-button four-wheel drive.
Notable owners[edit]
President Ronald Reagan owned a 1978 BRAT until 1998, which he kept at his ranch near Santa Barbara, California. The vehicle has since been restored and returned to the ranch, which is now owned by the Young America's Foundation.[6]
Appearances in media[edit]
A 1985 BRAT, decorated in the Stars and Stripes, was owned by Joy in the television show My Name Is Earl.[7]
In the movie Napoleon Dynamite, the character Rex from 'Rex Kwan Do' drove a 1982 BRAT.

Yeah they were a horizontal opposed 4 cylinder engine. Here in Australia Subaru called them a Brumby and we didn't get the jump seats in the back. Nice kit and great job. Always enjoy your vids. Cheers.

I have an original issue of this in the clean up tub. It didn't come with B.F.Goodrich's. Mine have the actual tires from the boxart! This is probably only the second or perhaps third issue of this kit, hence the great condition of this particular mold.

In the 80s I was partnered up with a guy who owned a Brat and we would head out in it to do some pro window cleaning. I almost slit my wrists. He drove at least ten mph under the limit, got lost a lot, worked slowly, stopped to put fresh water in his bucket WAY too often, sometimes disappearing for a maddening length of time (we weren't being paid by the hour) hunting for a water source. Adding to my torment was his over-enthusiastic religious ferver which compelled him to turn off the radio and pop preaching cassettes in, playing them ALL DAY despite my careful, cautious suggestion we at least listen to the weather (window cleaners hate rain), but to no avail. Why the story? It explains why I have absolutely no desire to relive that experience by building this model. But if anyone can point me toward a 1/25 1975 Buick LeSabre that would be cool. Got laid the first time in one. Nice, roomy interior. Better memories.

Yea, you guessed it - I had a NEW Brat in '78, being the Service Manager at a Subaru Dealership. My wife would NOT allow our 8 year old son to ride in the back - she can be a real buzz kill sometimes. What a memory flogger. I'm getting one to build and send to my son - yea, I'm also THAT guy. This is a great build, Chris. BTW, those "flat 4" engines were a joy to work on - except pulling the valve covers, thanks to the HUGE bump in the frames as they "pass by" the engine. Oh well, can't have everything. Oh, the Jackman Branded wheels rusted in the SHOWROOM, unless wiped down daily (in all fairness, it was in the Northwest, where even plastic rusts). Dang, one more thing, the exhaust pipes were made of two pieces, top & bottom, whose flanged edges were crimped and spot welded - crap design that saved Subaru a TON of money (that's why the exhaust looks like that, not flashing, just cheap pipes). Thank you for sharing...

Thank you so much for doing the SUBARU BRAT. I'm 50 years old and this video inspired me to build my very first model. I've now purchased 3 other kits from Moebius. I guess it's addictive. I owned an '84 BRAT l in Cosmic Blue" which faded to the point of very nearly being silver. Later it was repainted British Racing Green. It was a magnificent vehicle for 20 years. The wheel wells rusted out to where you could stick your whole hand through the holes, but it still ran like a top. I finally had to part with it in 2004 with 287,000 miles on it. Anyway, thanks for introducing me to a new hobby!

I know I'm late to the show here beautiful job done. What's cool is I just got done getting my brat that's been sitting 20 years running just last week and it's red like the one on the box it us just like that one. I plan to get this model and build it to look exactly like my brat I will be saving the original color and just clear coat the body rather than repainting it and saving the patina so I got to figure out how to do that on a model cuz I want to get just as detailed so very good work on your build

As a former Brat owner, I will confirm that the engine was a 1600cc horizontally opposed 4 cylinder. The previous comment about the spare tire being stored under the hood is correct, also. I'm not sure what year AMT is stating that this kit is a model of, but I know that the grille with 4 headlights certainly depicts correctly a 1980 model Brat. It may be the same for other years as well. I loved the video- it brought back a lot of memories, and makes me want to get my kit out and get started- mine will be pale yellow, like the one I had. However, I think I'll refrain from duplicating my rust, broken torsion bar, and half missing exhaust system. I love the videos, keep up the great work!!

Chris, I've been buying and building model cars & trucks since 1964. I didn't buy this model when it was 1st released, because Lesney was releasing some strange model vehicles that didn't appeal to me back then. Such a beautiful build, I can very much appreciate the work. My wife's first car was a 1980 GL Brat. In the lovely ubiquitous 80's beige color. I still have my 1982 Brat. In the states the Brat were only sold in 4wd, unlike the other models that could come in FWD. The first gen's came with a 1.6L horizontally opposed 4 cylinder, 4 speed single range transmission. The second gen's got a 1.8L and a dual range 4 speed trans. There was a half gen model that came with the older body, but a 1.8 engine and either a single or dual range trans.

What I found , that works for me,, is, when I do the roll bars, I’ll use the truck bed and glue the roll bars together. Then that way, I know that the roll bar will dry the way I want it to, and makes it a lot easier to glue it into the model. I’m having a lot of fun with my AMT BRAT and converted the flat 4 into a flat 6. Had to get two kits in order to put a 4” lift on mine.

Thank you Round2 for giving Chris the opportunity to make this model shine! Chris, great job, good idea with clamp. You are right about wheels. I vaguely remember pinstripes on the wagon wheels (it was either on the weight plate or just under it) that matched accent striping on the car. I think it was the brat, as that orange color on the graphics seems similar; the stripe was a double stripe, two colors. It drew your eye to the rust, lol. I could be wrong though. Ha ha. Great color scheme!

Always love your videos. Look forward to each & every one you build. You inspire me to build more. PLUS, your commontary & the music you during the painting process is awesome! I really think all of the models you build are cool. I can't think of anything I'd like to see you build, because you're always building something I forgot about or wasn't expecting!!! Zoom on dude!

Been following your vids,and think you do a fine job. They give our hobby a boost. I've got a question for you, I've been trying the Rust-Oleum paint,and it seems to take a long time to dry, and if the paint has primer built in , why prime? Keep those videos coming !
@hpiguy
@hpiguy 5 жыл бұрын
Primer just ensures it will hold and can help cover defects in the plastic. It's not 'needed' but I use it often for preshading and what not too. If it's humid it can take along time to dry. A very thick coat will take a long time too. While it appears on camera that the paint is thick, in person it's quite a thin layer of color that I'm putting on.

Thanks for bringing back memories.I build this kit years ago for a friend as a replica of her daily driver. was a fun build. I think I picked up another one at a swap meet and added it to my stash. Maybe I'll have to dig it out.Really like the blue.Good job!

Nice. At first glance I thought it was a real brat in a garage video. Then I read the title. I'm also 💨Highly Happy💨

In the UK, the Brat was very popular with the farming community. They rusted very badly.

Great build Chris I remember helping a friend work on one in the early 1980's what surprised me the most was they had the spare tire mounted under the hood ( it would have hidden the great detail work you did in there)
@hpiguy

Thanks Tom! Yes, there was no spare for under the hood in this one.

Came out great. Glad a lot of the old kits are coming back. Forgotten ones like this were my favorites. The motor is a flat boxer four banger that is the basis of the 4 cylinders that they still make today.
