Yeah. They are hit or miss. Last year I was on the westbound Southwest Chief when the train had to stop in Kansas City in the middle of the night. There wildfires ahead. Obviously not their fault, but the communication was completely broken down. We were sitting there with absolutely no guidance all night. The station attendants did stay, but they knew nothing. The conductors knew nothing and the phone lines were jammed, so you couldn't get through. It was awful. After the fact, they took good care of us, but that was a horrendous night.

Hi Paul. I'm curious, were any of your connections made the same day? For example, did you arrive in CHI on the Lakeshore Limited and catch the California Zephyr the same day? sadly it's a catch 22. Not enough demand to expand, no expansion to raise demand. Also stems in the ?vast distances one would have to cover for trackage. America's rail network is like a 3rd world nation or even worse. The trains just don't have delays. They will straight up cancel and leave passengers stranded to fend for themselves. The misadventures of your cross-country rail journey took me back to 1966 when my Mom planned a cross-country roundtrip by Trailways bus as a graduation gift, but mostly I think as an excuse to visit her mother in California. Great, crazy trip! Very memorable! Airlines were on strike, so the buses were crowded and delayed from departure. Then Greyhound bus went on strike as we were heading home, so Trailways recruited additional drivers. In the middle of the night, from Oklahoma City to Amarillo, Mom awoke and said, "This isn't Route 66." So the bus driver, in the middle of a thunder and lightening storm managed to turn the bus around on little more than a farm-track road in the middle of God knows where. Sunrise, approaching Amarillo, the driver got on the mic to say this wasn't his regular route and did anyone know the way into the Amarillo Trailways bus terminal. A big Texas woman, about 50 I guess, stepped up to the front of the bus and directed us smoothly into Amarillo. I can still hear the rough scrabble in her voice when I think back. Last leg of the trip was an unscheduled, protracted stop in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania standing on the sidewalk with all the other passengers, longingly on watch for the Philadelphia bus. So near and yet so far, Mom and I, though exhausted, joked about the stories we could tell! I can almost hear her voice now after all these years.

I saw the video of this one and it's amazing that the freight crew survived it. And an Amtrak would have been even worse. I knew a guy who worked for Metrolink the light railway in SoCal that also operates out of LA Union and he was on ML's response teams to accidents they've had. And the injuries are almost always severe internal injurires, spinal and TBIs. And the issues of shared tracks is also faced by the commuter trains including both UP and BNSF in SoCal. Which is how Metrolink had some of its devastating accidents. Working with trains is hard work and often dangerous. Delays happen but that's to try to keep people safe. Thankfully the three workers involved in this crash survived.

IROPS on Amtrak are rough, partly because the trains often go through some fairly remote territory where making arrangements for alternative transportation is difficult (trying to find buses on short notice is harder than it looks). In that part of the country, there isn't a lot of alternative track that's up to anywhere near passenger standard (CSX has even fairly recently floated the idea of downgrading major parts of the Cardinal's route with the decline of coal traffic). I was honestly expecting the Capitol Limited for the eastern leg (and maybe the Crescent to Greensboro, though getting in at zero-dark-thirty), for more Superliner action (though far less scenic than the Cardinal).
@sturmovik1274 Жыл бұрын
Not just the track standards, they'd also need to find engineers who were qualified on the track they were detouring over. And then get those engineers to the train. And, since those engineers don't know how to run Amtrak engines, the Amtrak engineer would need to stay on duty. And that Amtrak engineer is legally obligated to stop working after 12 hours on duty, so at that point the train is immobilized by law until you can get another Amtrak engineer to the train. Railroad detours are fun times.
@LeviRamsey Жыл бұрын
@@sturmovik1274 one of the most notable detours I can think of a few years back was the Lake Shore Limited running on the ex-Nickel Plate west of Sandusky (both the ex-Nickel Plate and the (ex-New York Central) Water Level Route are NS, which simplified getting a pilot for the detour (I think this was during Wick Moorman's tenure at AMTK, he being formerly at NS, so may have called in favors...)

The best example from this video is when your wife said "it's not Amtrak's fault" after booting you off the train. Amtrak is most certainly responsible for its business arrangements with the freight companies it contracts with. It would be like saying it's not United Airlines fault a plane ride was cancelled because of a broken plane part provided by a contractor. The condition of the rails are shoddy, Amtrak's on time service is dismal, their food is awful and much of their equipment is very old. I get it! You love trains. We love all your videos, thank you so much for everything you do to bring us this information. Cheers!

I've used amtrack to get to university a few times and you really have to be flexible with your plans and have a back up in place. Every time there has been a delay employees have always been incredibly helpful throughout the entire process.

I have done several Coast to Coast trips on Amtrak and would recommend the California Zephyr from Emeryville to Chicago and then the Lakeshore Limited to Boston. One time on the east bound Zephyr we were held in a small Kansas town for 12 hours because the westbound Zephyr was stuck in a snowbank east of town. Once we got moving again and farther down the line we hit a pick up truck that had been abandoned at a crossing . No injuries, but another six hours before we were on our way again. We were over 18 hours late arriving in Chicago. Everybody got vouchers and thank God I was in a Roomette. They kept us fed and reasonably comfortable and it allowed me an extra night in my room rather than spending a night on the floor at union station in Chicago, lol. I did feel bad for the coach passengers, though.

This was such a great video! I appreciate all the info you provided about what happens when there is a delay, thank you! This summer I am hoping to take the Empire Builder, Coast Starlight, California Zephyr, Capitol Limited, and Northeast Regional in one epic cross country and return trip!

I saw video of that derailment crash on YT and it was really bad (22 cars). Amazing the crew on that train survived! And the track was badly damaged. A passenger train would have been devastating! I know with metrolink (SoCal's light rail) trains when they break down it takes quite a while to get alternate transportation. for them. I hope you do your cross country trip soon. I LOVE watching your train videos. They're fun and educational. I hope to do some more Amtrak traveling myself. Coast Starlight and Zeph trains as well as the Rocky Mountaineer.

I would suggest perhaps during the late summer/early autumn (Before winter weather massacres Amtrak schedules...) perhaps doing either the Lake Shore Limited (NY to CHI) or Capitol Limited (WAS-CHI) then any of the western trains to California. Another different option could be the Crescent to New Orleans, then the entire Sunset Limited route to LA through South Texas.

Darn!! I was looking forward to your stop in Harpers Ferry, WV. My mom lived there, and I took Amtrack several times from Jacksonville, Florida. It's such a special, beautiful and historical town. My trip had a six hour layover in DC, which allowed for sightseeing and some good food. Glad you made it home safely and quickly.

My wife and I made several long western journeys on Coast Starlight (LA to Portland, when the Parlour Car was in service), Southwest Chief (LA to Albuquerque) and Empire builder (Portland to Glacier national park). Overall we had very few delays- nothing as bad as what you experienced. Loved the journeys we took. Now we have a 3 year old... what you went through would be hell on rails with a child :)

I did High Point NC to Irvine CA pre covid. Carolinian to Washington, Capitol Limited to Chicago, Southwest Chief to LA and Pacific Surfliner to Irvine. Not many delays and it was summer time. Better weather. Now I fly to Chicago and take westbound trains from there.

I live in NJ and my personal DREAM Amtrak cross-country route would be the *Lake Shore Limited* from NY to Chicago and then the *Southwest Chief* from Chicago to LA. Curious what you’d think!

I feel you❣️ Amtrak’s motto should be:”We will arrive there… eventually… one day… not in a hurry!” But we still love it;) in two weeks me and my 6 year old will embark on a month-long journey to cross the country counter clock-wise: from New Orleans to NYC- then to Boston- then to Chicago- then to Denver- then to Salt Lake- then to San Francisco - then to LA and San Diego- then to San Antonio - and back to New Orleans! I bought two Amtrak passes for $299 each when they were on sale this year(usually they are $500 each!).

Hi guys. Really love your vids! Back in 1999 I took Amtrak from Trenton N.J. to Chicago through D.C. Don't remember what train it was. Then Chicago to L.A. on the Southwest Chief. L.A. to San Jose (Home) on the Coast Starlight. This was all done in coach! 85 hours! Met many interesting people with lots of laughs and fun stories. This was in early December that year so there were times we had to pull over for the snowplow train to go by! One interesting thing was all the way across the country if there was any kind of delay they were quick to let us know what was going on UNTIL we got to within 20 miles of San Jose depot. A lumber hauling train dropped its load on the track and there was NO announcements about what was going on! Here's the rub. I could honestly look out the window and see my neighborhood! After 80+ hours we had a one hour delay! Frustrating but still an amazing trip! I always tell people I'm glad I did it but wouldn't want to do it again! At least in coach anyway! Well, that's my tale. Thanks for listening and please keep up the good work! Safe travels!

Thank you, guys. It's informative videos like this that had me changing my summer plans from an Amtrak round trip to flying there and taking Amtrak back to Sacramento. My original plans were to see some of the country for my birthday. That changed when the possibility of seeing the group Home Free popped up. Now I'm just waiting for their schedule to expand to end of June/mid August. If that falls through I'll just fly to Chicago and take the California Zephyr back to Sacramento. Or maybe San Francisco.

I hope the two crew members ended up all good. wow I'm impressed that Amtrak kept you so updated. You we're lucky you lived close by. Start in Seattle again and do it like you were. remember you got to see things this time because of the delay. So you we're awake. So if you doo it again. you'll see something different.

Its always quite sad to see a beautiful machine that isn't moving but honestly as a foreigner I hear a lot of flak given about Amtrak but watching your channel has shown me that their services, while they could be far better (Such as being double tracked and electrified) aren't actually abysmal and compared to my own home (NZ) surprisingly good and I only wish that NZ had services similar to it to minimize my need for a vehicle.

I guess I've been lucky, the worse delay I've had was an hour on the Texas eagle. On the Zephyr it was so early I jumped off at Richmond and caught the BART into town. I was in the hotel before the coaches had left Emeryville. You really need to come and do a few Train trips in Europe

Being a charter bus driver, there are available buses, but they have to be contracted, then drivers have to get ready, buses inspected (usually 30 minutes), drive to RR station. It does take time. Glad you two made it home safely. Looking forward to your next adventure.😊

I love watching your videos. I have traveled Amtrak a number of times, all east of Chicago. Longest delay was 6 hours or so after taking the Capitol Limited from Chicago to Washington DC. There was a massive snowstorm in Pennsylvania, and lots of freight traffic. Fortunately I had built in a day buffer so that I was able to get on my connecting train from DC to Newport News VA. I am planning a trip on Amtrak in 2024 going from Chicago to Emeryville CA on the Zephyr, Coast Starlight from Emeryville to Seattle, and Empire Builder back to Chicago. You could do that and maybe take the Capitol Ltd from DC to Chicago. That's a lot of train time, but doing it all in a bedroom would be fun. I always do roomettes, because it's just me, and they are cheaper than bedrooms. Sorry for what you had to go through when your train was cancelled in WV. I laughed so hard when you were talking about hating driving. I am the opposite. I love to drive, love taking long road trips. That would have been a great experience for me to drive the five hours from WV to NC. Would have loved to do that for you. Thanks for keeping us all informed and entertained!

Hey Jeb. As a veteran Amtrak rider, I’ve got two suggestions for you for when you and Suzanne (hope I got the spelling right) attempt the cross country Amtrak trip again. First suggestion (going through Chicago) is the Carolinian to New York City, the Lake Shore Limited to Chicago and the California Zephyr to Emeryville. Second suggestion (avoiding Chicago) is the Carolinian to DC, the Crescent to New Orleans and the Sunset Limited to Los Angeles. Good luck!

Great vlog as always! Wow! Bad for pax and Amtrak. Holy cow! I agree with Jeb 100% about driving. It is such a drag! I have lived in MI U.P and driver across the Macinac several times. How many states in the U.S have an upper and lower, or are devided in two. The train from OSL-BGO was stranded for 14h at Myrdal for the same reason as your train. A train from Flåm had to rescue 200 pax down to Flåm and busses to BGO. Things happends. Life is never boring. Keep up the good work! Be safe! I have another DIY for the mrs at hotel rooms to make 100% dark. Pull the curtains together, get a coat hanger with the clips on, use the clips to make it darker! You are welcome! Lol!

The Southwest Chief from Chicago to Los Angeles is an absolutely amazing and sometimes stunning train trip as it flies across Kansas at over 90 mile an hour overnight and then crawls very slowly through narrow canyon walls you could almost touch if the windows opened through New Mexico. And the Union station in Kansas City along the way is an absolute marvel of earl 20th century architecture and engineering, it is the third biggest train station in the country (because of its location) and is absolutely spectacular inside, soaring murals and giant windows casting shafts of light across huge multi-colored marble tile floors. And it's across the street from the nation's official World War I memorial a museum which is equal to anything in d.c. , an incredible thing to see if you have the time. I would recommend taking your favorite route to Chicago and then taking the Southwest Chief, it is really amazing and I have always been impressed with the Amtrak service in its roomettes, it is for me the only way to travel if somebody has the time. And often the upgrade from a seat to a room at is extremely affordable at check-in, that's the way I've always done it!
