This was because of a coal train that derailed near Somonauk, IL on the Mendota sub. It blocked both tracks so the Southwest Chief and the California Zephyr were combined and sent up the Chillicothe sub to Chicago.

That cat was just playing. Don't know why Amtrak didn't just couple the trains together elephant-style, which is common European practice for two trains that either combine or split en route? I'm guessing it has something to do with the crew being able to pass all the way through the train, but they can't on PVs that are on the end of a Superliner consist anyway.
@markfisher13926 ай бұрын
Since a coal train derailed ahead of them on the former CB&Q line, both trains would have needed to reverse several miles to Cameron Illinois. The "connector" track (a high-speed double-wye) at Cameron allows trains to switch between the former CB&Q main line and the former AT&SF main line in either direction. Rather than back both consists that far, the first train reversed direction while the second did its station work. Doing it this way allowed the locomotives on the first train to lead back to the Cameron connector. The combined trains could "do a U-turn" without stopping and proceed back northeast to Chicago on the old AT&SF line at track speed. It would have taken additional time to turn the second consist. This happened last summer as well, when a storm dropped trees on the CB&Q line.

16:10 ok what is actually happening here?? A solar powered BNSF Passenger car and a single covered hopper being transported by a single loco? There’s definitely lore behind this and I desperately want to know it.
@BudgieJane6 ай бұрын
The hopper car is in use as a buffer between the loco and the passenger car. If you stop the video you can read the notice on the side of the hopper, which says it is for buffer service only.
@markfisher13926 ай бұрын
The passenger car is a track inspection car (a "geometry car") with sensors, including cameras, lasers, radar and machine vision systems to survey the track structure passing beneath. That's why it's rolling so slow. As BudgieJane said, the hopper car is a "buffer" car. I'm not certain of its actual function -- maybe to add braking capability or reduce electrical interference from the locomotive?
@kennethhanks67126 ай бұрын
This is a track geometry consist for detecting flaws in the trackwork. The hopper is filled/ballasted to a specific amount and the ex-passenger car has instrumentation and technicians to monitor the effect on the track and detect any anomalies or flaws.

Bridge segments. We had the old wooden rail bridge replace a shield back. The lower the segments into place between bridge piers, or central supports. Then they can fill them with ballast and then ties, rails and all. They do many things. First maintenance is a breeze since it’s just another stretch of track. You don’t have to worry about wood rot from rain and rivers, which can be impossible to detect until it’s too late. Look at how much support structure wood rail bridges need. If one of the wood segments rots and collapses the whole bridge can collapse. Second. Wood bridges are also prone to warping. Even the tiniest warping can misalign the track. 3 speed. Many old wooden bridges are speed restrictive. Those concrete segments allow the same speed
