Unlike most people who use the term, these thing actually have "rizz" both the trains and the commercial.

The Metroliner Service was phased out in 2006 for additional Acela Express service. The Acela is the updated form of the Metroliner Service.

Metroliner was discontinued largely due to the introduction of the Acela and the redundancy of the Northeast Regional.

Amtrak did have a form of Northeast Regional service back then too. In 1994 they had various Amfleet equipped trains that ran between Boston and DC (and some continued south to Richmond/Newport News VA) that were non-Metroliner trains and ran on slower schedules. I believe they still had unique individual train names at this point (ex. The Colonial, The Tidewater, Bay State, etc). In 1995 or 1996 they rebranded these trains as "Northeast Direct" service which eventually was renamed "Acela Regional" for a very short time and then was renamed Northeast Regional probably around 2003.
