Amtrak SC-44 and ALC-42 Chargers at Rondout

Back in March 2022, I ventured down to Rondout to catch Amtrak's Hiawatha and Empire Builder trains by the searchlights and interlocking tower. These trains (mostly) had Amtrak's newer Siemens Charger locomotives, with SC-44s on the Hiawatha trains and ALC-42s on the Empire Builder. Unfortunately the searchlights here are no longer standing, as they were replaced by more modern signals in November 2022.

Wonderful video, Samm! Thank you for documenting these Amtrak trains with the newest Siemens manufactured engines on them. The Hiawatha trains that run between Chicago, Illinois and Milwaukee, Wisconsin were interesting to watch as they and the Amtrak Empire Builder train ran through Rondout Junction in Libertyville, Illinois. That Hiawatha train at the end of the video had me doing a double take when it went from the sidetrack to the southbound Canadian Pacific mainline track. The train initially was heading on the Metra Line to Fox Lake, Illinois. I was thinking "Why is an Amtrak train going to Fox Lake, Illinois?" Then I saw that the train was heading northbound on the southbound Canadian Pacific mainline.

Yes. It’ll make it easier for trains to come on and off the Fox Lake Sub.

Nice compilation of Amtrak trains with Siemens-manufactured engines on the head end. Don’t know which I like better SC-44s or ALC-42s. I guess I like both. They are definitely modern, have quicker acceleration, powered by state-of-the-art Cummins QSK95 16-cylinder diesel engines that meet EPA’s strict Tier 4 emissions standards and are low-emission diesel locomotives that commuter agencies around where I live like MBTA should consider getting chargers.
