Trainz Simulator, better known simply as "Trainz", has a had a long and varied history since it's first release in 2001. What once was a simple, indie-developed model railway planning program, is now one of the, if not the most popular train simulator out there in the world today. There's been plenty of updates, problems, and general changes over the past 20 years leading up to what we have today known as Trainz Railroad Simulator 2019. Today, Trainz is well known for its surveyor feature along with ease and popularity of user-created content. Trainz has been built and heavily revolves around its fans. So, how exactly did Trainz get into the position it is today? That's what I'm taking a look at today.
Big thanks to my friends for providing me with some Trainz 12 and some Trainz: A New Era video clips as well!

When I was a kid, my parents said I had to choose between MSTS and Trainz 2004 because there wasn't enough room on the computer for both. I chose Trainz 2004 because it felt more customizable and the camera was more free-roaming. (I've seen people use a free-roaming camera on KZbin, but could never figure out how to do it) Not only that, but we frequently had a problem in MSTS where we'd download a new train, but couldn't drive it because of a "failed to create cab view" message that would instantly crash the game. (We also had issues in TRS2004 with missing dependencies because of how difficult content manager was to figure out back then, but at least it never crashed the game. Fast-forward to today, and I feel like I made the right choice. I recently learned how to make content in Blender, so now whenever I need something, I can just make it. (I've been practicing on lighthouses to see how my textures look in-game.)

I'm really sorry this video took seemingly forever to release. Personal matters and college really have been a huge pain in the ass as of recent and really delayed this video, but I do hope the wait was worth it as I'm quite proud of this project. Big thanks to my friends Mountain Ridge Films, Michelle C., and Kauai Pacific Railroad Productions (their channel links are in the description) for recording the Trainz 12, and some Trainz: A New Era scenes for me too! Trainz has been a part of my life for nearly 10 years at this point, so I hoped to inject as much passion as possible into this. Without Trainz, I'm not sure my channel would be in the position it is now. It was the first type of videos I uploaded that got me on the algorithm in the first place! Either way, I hope you enjoy this historical look and retrospective on the Trainz series!

I think Trainz is arguably the best train simulator game you can get. I used to play Microsoft Train Simulator as well when I was like 9-10 but due to its lack of updates unlike Trainz, I kinda lost interest. I think Trainz will be loved by railfans and gamers alike for years to come and you did a great job sharing the history of this game's development :)

My earliest Trainz memory was when I downloaded the demo versions of TRS2004 and TRS2006 in 2008, when I was 11 years old. TRS2006 demo didn't have surveyor, but the TRS2004 demo did, and I really liked the customization feature. I believe it was sometime later when I got the full version of TRS2006, and that was when I downloaded custom content (mainly trains). From there, I would go on to TS2009 in 2010, TS12 in 2012, and (briefly due to having weak computer with no graphics accelerator and little RAM) TANE in 2016. I'm 26 now, and I recently bought TRS2022 and I'm getting an graphics accelerator card and additional RAM to get the most out of it. I wouldn't be there today if weren't for 11-year old me downloading the demo versions of TRS2004 and TRS2006 all those years ago.

I don't think I've seen anyone talk about how My First Trainz was heavily inspired by Sierra's 3D-Ultra Lionel Traintown, down to the identical loading docks, household setting, and near-comical cargos. I wish there were more mods for that since it'd be great to have a proper 3D port of the Sierra game that actually has the indepth puzzles and functionality of the original.

Lionel Traintown is the only railroad-themed video game I've ever encountered that is both truly fun, and where the train-related elements feel genuinely integral to the game. I had a number of versions of this game, it's the route builder that really made this game stand out over all the others with the way-too-simple-for-their-price routes. The player created assets were both a blessing and a curse as dependencies often gave issues. You can both play this from a train driver perspective or as an actual railroad sim and you can make -big- landscapes with lots of equally branches / whatever.

This was such an incredible video! The more I learn about Trainz, the more I regret my decision to have put so much money into Train Simulator lol! Maybe I’ll switch over at some point, but for now I feel obligated to stay just because a second year architecture student at RPI only has so much money... but anyways, love the content, and hope you are well! Stay healthy!

I always had a problem with T:ANE with the derailments, especially when you want to create a hell of a bloody mess to clean up. The smoke from steam locomotives behaving like the real thing was great and it's definitely something that another train simulator game should be thinking of (Dovetail Games, take note).

A great video with a few unknown things to me. I've been with Trainz from the Original Trainz release although my first 'deep dive' was with 2004. And I did not start with route building until version 2009. I subscribed.

When i was 7 or 8 yrs old.. my very first trainz was TRS2004, me and my dad just installed it in an old laptop and we got much fun running in the Robe River Iron route, then we moved to TRS2006.. very great memories playing!

Here in Brazil, Trainz was very successful between 2009 and 2012 and I am an administrator of the Trainz Brazil Forum, which had thousands of members and is now completely erased ... My first train simulator was exactly the Trainz was the 2010, which I bought of a street vendor, without knowing anything about him and after him my story started on Trainz. It is a passion that I cannot explain, I already had all the simulators, but Trainz is my favorite, by far, mainly for its spectacular ability to create routes and the multitude of assets created by the fans. I hope that one day it will be as popular here again, as it has been in the past.

Trainz 2 on the IPad was my first trainz game, and a staple of my early childhood. So many years later, it is so awesome to see how far it's come and how much it's improved! Trainz will always have a special place in my heart.

As an aussie from queensland who grew up seeing the classic red and yellow livery diesels, and having your father litterally work for the railway, those old versions of trainz are extremely nostalgic looking to me.

I must admit that I'm a huge fan of Trainz. I started out with Trainz 2004 although I had both MSTS and Trainz on my computer at that time, I quickly realized that Trainz was the far superior product, and I thoroughly enjoyed the skills it gave me to create my own layouts, and later modify other creators layouts to my needs. I still use it at least once a week but I should admit here that the sessions do last for hours and hours, I get that engrossed in it.

@@NJP76 I feel you on that. TRS2006 was my intro to the Trainz brand. I still have the 5 CD case it came in, actually. Even after getting the newer games, I just haven't been able to get into the newer routes as much as the ten that were native to TRS2006.

I feel guilty seeing this (trainz, a new era in particular) in Steam, and assuming it was the same deal as that other Railroad sim where you got one train with the game, and everything else cost a fortune (DCS Style). I'll have to put the new one on my watchlist. it looks fun.
