I keep coming back to this. Not only is it just an outstanding work in the genre as a Romance, but also such great idiomatic writing for the violin. And from a pianist--ita not always easy to do that at such a high level. The more I learn about Mrs. Beach's life and work the more intrigued and impressed I am.

Ironically, I find the violin writing quite mediocre (e.g. 1:50) compensated for somewhat by amazing playing. Generally, I find Beach tragic. She's clearly one of the greatest musical geniuses that ever lived (she was self-taught!), but most of her music is at best only satisfying sometimes, this one included. If you compare her with any of her contemporaries in Boston, I think she was just so much better than any of them already that she never got the stimulus that European contemporaries got. If she had sought out training for how to develop her music, I can only imagine what she would have produced. The violin sonata and piano trio are quite good and the quartet is interesting. I think her most popular works like the Gaelic and Mass are unfortunately more historical curiosities than her best pieces, which prevents a real revival.

According ro Syrrius..Satellite radio channel. Amy taught to read music at 3 years of age and her first composition at 4 years old. A genius.

Noah, just watching you and hearing you play teaches me a lot. What a wonderful heartfelt performance and what an excellent bowhand you have! Everything was just like I would have played it, if I only could! And the pianist! Wonderful togetherness and beautiful tone and touch. Kudos to you both!
