This song was originally written by Chris Eaton, but Amy Grant wanted to record it and asked Chris if she could rewrite some of the lyrics from a woman's perspective, namely Mary. Chris agreed. No. The essence of the song tells us she is frightened, unsure, lonely and afraid. As we all are when we are caught or confused or struggling with a reason to believe. She trusts something larger and herself and quite mysterious. There was no Christianity for Mary. Fully human, Jewish and confused, she worked hard to trust the mystery. That's the idea anyway. As we all do.

This is a holy song. Weighty and specific in it's cry for God's divine guidance and direction. You did not say the following explicitly but I feel that I need to say the following... Mary was, indeed a tool, mightily used by God to bring His Son into the world. She declared Christ to be her "Saviour" in the "Magnificat" & a sinless woman (Pope Pius IX declaring her to be the "immaculate conception" in December 1854, declaring that she, as well as Christ, was sinless)!! A sinless person does not need a Saviour!! She was also not a perpetual virgin (also so-declared by Rome)! In Matthew 13 v 55&56 we read, "Is not this the carpenter's son? Is not his mother called Mary & his brother's names James, Joses, Simon & Judas & his sisters, are they not all with us? She was a woman mightily used by God but calling her "the Mother of God" (Council of Ephesus, 431) is also blasphemy. She was a mighty person of faith but never "co-Redemptrix" (so declared on June 26, 1913). However, Rome back-peddled on this when it's theology proved unpopular & tremendously difficult for Rome to explain well enough so that it's own people didn't revolt). Her reward, in heaven will be great but she will NOT sit on the right-hand of God! That seat is Christ's alone!

This song makes me cry. As a former Catholic Mary was a big part of my youth. I remember learning Hail Mary as a little girl. The Catholic Church over emphasizes her. I no longer believe in praying to her or asking for her help. I am a Christian but no longer with the Catholic Church. Beautiful song.

Why does all of Christianity virtually have the custom as asking people to "pray for them?" Isn't it a waste of time when you could go straight to Jesus?

@superbreadgirl05 I am sorry for you misunderstanding. This is a popular myth about Catholics, but we DO NOT IN ANY WAY "exalt Mary as if she's God." All we do is ask her to pray for us, as the closest human to Jesus (being his mother). We see her as a mediatrix, meaning someone who as God's mother is close enough to Him to ask for favors on our behalf. So yes, she's a big deal, but no we do not worship her or even pray TO her. We pray TO Jesus THROUGH Mary. We only do what Jesus Himself did when He brought salvation to the world through a human. He didn't have to do that, but he chose to, making Mary the new Eve...just as Eve assisted in the death of mankind through Sin, Mary assists in the redemption of mankind through Jesus. Again, in case I wasn't clear, CATHOLICS DO NOT SEE MARY AS DIVINE. I cannot stress that enough. Also, "Catholic" means "universal" which is not the same thing as "all accepting." Such a angelic voice! My cousin sang this when I was little. I felt she had the the most angelic voice. I wish to see her again so i can tell her how much I loved her voice. I didn't know you well.
