I think Amy and her books speak to all of us on many levels, especially those of us that are first or second generation American. There is often so much about our mother's lives that goes unspoken unless we ask the questions. I think we all need to get to a point where we look at our mother's through the eyes of a friend instead of a child. So often we can't imagine that our mothers hope or dreamed of anything else other than becoming a wife and mother---that's the be-all, end-all. I'm glad before my mother died that she told me her dream was to be a professional figure skater or ballroom dancer. I would have never guessed in a million years that was a dream she let die for me. Amy Tans books begs us all to peel back that onion so we can have a deeper more fulfilling relationship with our mothers.
