I became a writer because of you. Not necessarily a novelist, but I've written all my life. It all traces back to finding Potter at age 11 or 12 in the 90s. I've writen short fiction, poetry, non fiction, blogs, and everything in between. Now work in marketing and constantly writing. One day I hope to finish the manuscript collecting dust in my Google Drive. I'm not sure I would've gained a passion for reading and writing if not for you. Thank you for inspiring me

I'm 45. Been writing for 30 years, 35 novels written, ranging from 180k-282k words, 1000's of hours spent alone. I write because I hear the voices, and they tell me what to say. I'll always respect J.K Rowing for what she has brought to the imaginations of both children and adults. I've always wanted to write to her and thank her, but I have no idea who to send my letter to. Maybe send an owl? lol :)

Thank you for Harry Potter. It has thought me about courage, life and death, and the importance of unity. It was the most important story I was told in my childhood, and has profoundly guided and shaped my moral compass to this day. It also brought my family together as my mother read us your stories, and they sparked fires in our imaginations and turned into a burning desire to write stories of my own, and pay forwards what you had given to us. You are a true inspiration and one of the defining heroes our time. Thank you.

I suspect she doesn't want to give away her secrets about narrative misdirection too much, but if you really study it in her writing yourself it's fascinating. She's one of the only authors alive to put so much effort into mystery right now (which is in my opinion a more dynamic and superior way of writing). I don't know why other authors never care about adding mystery as much.

Dear Ms Rowling 🌹✨Thank you so much for this wonderful insight into your writing process! I love your mental image of a lake and a shed. I can walk around the lake for ages and get lots of ideas. But later, in the shed, my perfectionist inner critic keeps telling me that I was too stupid to use the tools that are neatly hung on the walls. He says that instead of making something beautiful out of the flotsam and jetsam in my bucket and net, I'll just mess it all up. You see, the inner critic expects me to come up with printable sentences in the crappy first draft! He doesn't understand that if he doesn't let me write, he won't have anything to nitpick about in the end. Unfortunately, my inner despot seems to be resistant to logic. So I guess I should have someone stand behind my chair with the thickest book available and hit me with it as soon as I start editing, correcting and deleting lines, instead of soldiering on and finishing my first draft. I'm sooo looking forward to watching part two! 🥳

a nice gift to me on my birthday! I love listening to authors. I love talking about my writing. One day, I’d love to talk to a fellow author, face to face. I write by the seat of my pants, with no planning, following the thread wherever it leads, outlining as I go. My plot, my characters, constantly throw me curveballs. Writing for me is as fun as reading, it is the funnest thing I’ve over done.

"It feels like discovery rather than creation." I think, this remark on her character backstory creation sheds lots of light on why her characters are so "real". Never shallow. Always psychologically consistent. They make sense, even and especially, when their actions don't. Also explains, why great writers need to be very empathic.

Mrs. Rowling, can I share an amazing story with you? One day I was driving home, when all of a sudden the Lord came to me in spirit. I felt very close to Him. I knew if I asked him to play any song on the radio he would, I guess to bless my faith. So I said "ok, Lord play "Come as you are by Nirvana". I turned on the radio and the song started playing right there on the spot, perfectly… I started getting flooded with chills like a waterfall, crying, and trembling. He stayed with me for 10 minutes in my driveway. until I got outta the car. A couple months after that I started getting amazing prayers answered way more often, because it helped me quit doubting when I pray and I was lined up with biblical instructions. It's 6 years later and I still get answered prayers in Jesus name.

Definitely has to be word and not excel… Very interesting difference compared to her HP & The Order of The Phoenix handwritten grids... And different from the 60 min show sneak peak she gives us of the outline of HP & The Goblet of Fire. So, I’m wondering….She has all the information on the stories in her head and notebooks and then creates a grid/outline and fills in the basics and keeps the more in depth detail in her brain and notes…. Would be cool to see how she preplanned all 7 Potter books with her outlining process. Especially early on. I love that butterfly notebook she has with the history of the Death Eaters. Anyway, this was a wonderful interview, but for the obsessive in me I would have loved to have known other things and greedy me would want a two hour video. 🤷‍♂️

This reminds me of WH Auden's essays on the creative process. The pure creativity is the lake, and the inner critic is the shed

I love how she talked about “discovery”; how sometimes writing is not so much the act of creation and invention as it is discovering the story itself. For example, I usually know when something I’m writing is wrong. I know when it isn’t right because it doesn’t “feel right”. And it works the opposite way, too. I know when something is right because it just “feels right”, if you know what I mean?

@@lucas8409 ok u know what...I dont wana come off on the wrong foot and just directly criticize without explanation, I'll put it this way, it's not that iam too young that i believe in God , iam 24,it's more like ,now that iam getting older i have learnt to be able to believe him , by my own choice , not by other's influence or force, through his works in my life, through the peace of mind that i gain when Iam doing good deeds(even if it's a tiny deed) and favouring God. God don't want a force convert, he want those that convert by their own opinion cus if u r a forced convert u r just another " doing it cus people do it" kind of person. And why do people expect that since God is God why don't he make everything better Himself just by the wave of his hand. Tell u what, if God just makes everything better with his power, what are we worth to him, we are given free will, nobody controls u, not God and not satan, u will live by free will to decide what's right and what's wrong, if u choose to do good deeds, believe in God, u r worth to him,cus by your own free will u choose him. But If u wana be more logical, leme guess, u haven't read the Bible, u r taking Hollywood movies as a reference to interpret religion, I'll tell u, they make shit up and add a lot of extra for entertainment and Hollywood is illuminati (u will see evidences from Jim Carrey the Goat and many other Hollywood celebrities like Kevin Hart who is always alert when the word illuminati comes up), u r just worrying about your everyday life and about people that you're stuck in that loop. U have never thought deep or haven't thought enough, and the main reason why people don't wana abide by religion is cus of many limitations that are associated with it,cus i understand who doesn't wana have fun, from the smallest living organisms like viruses which is not even capable of thoughts and is just a mere protein and DNA likes to live and replicate in environment that favours it, just cus u r religious doesn't mean u can't have fun, u can, doing good deeds. You have been learning about molecules, atoms ,quarks but no one knows who makes them,u think they are just there. Is it more wise to believe everything is created by "chance" than by "Someone"? That's like losing an argument and adding "by chance if it happens" that's like the last resort of an argument . And the Big Bang theory people so believe is already disproved , because recent studies have shown that every cosmic objective in the universe is not moving away from a common point but they are moving apart from one another. And in the Bible is written , the stars and the moon will fall into darkness, which the stars do when they run out of energy for reaction which results to the moon losing light cus of no more light source from the stars that's dimming. It's also written in the Bible that the stars will begin to fall which could happen when the universe is expanding to the point where every cosmic objective moves too far apart and their gravitational force will not be able to influence one another. Another thing, "B.C" I'm sure u know what it means and y we are using it as term to define a certain timeline, yes "Before Christ". There are many evidences, like Noah's Ark and so on, but in the Bible is written "Blessed are those who believe without the need for evidence ,without seeing" why ?cus believing without seeing is the extent of of their faith. Iam in my Masters and I study science as my major and personally i believe that science is the study of God's creation.

Shamefully, I never read all of J.K. Rowling's Harry Potter books, maybe someday I will, at the moment I am working on my poetry book I am going to self-publish and funny enough I have written a poem in there called Odette (me) and Harry Potter, lol! I am also writing a short story, recently I have been published in the second Newport Anthology by my writer's group, though I am on universal credit and on the Autism spectrum I will get there for if J.K Rowling's can do it, so can I! despite all those who laughed at me thinking, yeah, right. I'm hoping that once I finish my poetry book is when I will be able to focus more on my fantasy novel in the meantime, I think I might have to add another poem to my collection.
