The book is a conversation that Dolores is having with the detectives, all in her voice with the accent. It has a tie-in moment with “Gerald’s Game” which came out at the same time. The main character in that book had a traumatic experience during the same eclipse and they were mystically connected somehow. Mike Flanagan, who also did “Midnight Mass” and “The Haunting of Hill House” among other things, actually adapted “Gerald’s Game” for Netflix too and it’s fantastic. I never thought it could be done, certainly not as well as he did it. This takes place on the fictional Little Tall Island where Stephen King’s miniseries “Storm of the Century” is set and Dolores gets a little mention in that one too. I highly recommend both the ones I mentioned here.

@DavidvsFilm Since you enjoued this one so much, you should definitely check out Gerald's Game. They absolutely are parallel stories. King initially wrote Dolores Claiborne and Gerald's Game as one novel, but decided to split them. Gerald's Game was considered completely unfilmable for years, but Mike Flannigan did a showstopping job with is 2017 adaptation.

I love you guys and I love this movie. Saw it in the theater in 1995 when I was a little closeted teenager. My friends didn't quite get why I wanted to see this drama film about a bunch of women, but they went with me and really liked it too. Years later when I became a mental health professional, I told a client about it and she told me that watching the film was a very difficult experience for her, but that it gave her the push to start working on her own buried trauma. I will forever love this film. And I agree, more people should know about this film and it should be more appreciated. Judy Parfitt as Vera was soooo great! I love her character, both when she is young and old

On a sidenote, I lived in Maine for 18 years. And I saw this movie when it first came out on VHS at blockbuster. The atmosphere and attitudes in this movie were very accurate to mean. I wish I had some interesting trivia for you about this movie, but I honestly don’t think I have anything. I think you should give Marc the choice of movies on Valentine’s Day and for his birthday! Christopher Plummer is one of my favorite actors of all time! A few recommendations: You definitely need to watch the 1978 Canadian heist movie ''The Silent Partner'' (also with Elliot Gould and Susannah York) in which he's incredible (you can't believe your eyes lol) and very creepy. John Huston's ''The Man Who Would Be King'' (1975), with Sean Connery and Michael Caine, one of the greatest adventure movies ever made, and ''Murder By Decree'' (1979) by Bob Clark (director of classics as ''Deathdream'', ''Black Christmas'', ''Porky's'', ''A Christmas Story'' and (LOL) ''Rhinestone'' with Sylvester Stallone and Dolly Parton), with Plummer as Sherlock Holmes (who meets Jack The Ripper), and with an amazing cast, including another favorite of mine (when it comes to the older generation of actors) James Mason as Dr. Watson.

Like you've mentioned, I was also not a big ''fan'' of Jennifer Jason Leigh, but she's fantastic in Joel & Ethan Coen's ''The Hudsucker Proxy'' (a movie y'all could watch during Christmas time), and in ''Miami Blues'' (1990), and of course in ''The Hitcher'' (1986) with the great legendary actor from The Netherlands, Rutger Hauer (R.I.P.).

'supp, David and Marc! Yep, this is an odd pick for Valentines Day, but I understand the appreciation for Kathy Bates. Personally, I loved and hated this movie at the same time. The whole cast and acting is perfection, but the S-abuse hits too close to home. Like one in four women, I am one of those who experienced abuse of this nature (from a trusted family member). That said, it is a good movie for depicting the realism and bringing the issue to light. The actor playing the husband is so good at his craft and stole my heart, as Johnny, in Lost in Yonkers (with Mercedes Reuhl).

Well nothing says “Happy Valentine’s Day” like Dolores Claiborne. 😂 I don’t think I’ve seen this movie since it came out. I forgot how good it is. It was fun to hear those classic one liners again. “An accident is an unhappy woman’s best friend.” Ugh…so good! You’re right though, this movie doesn’t get the attention it deserves. I guess it goes to “Misery”, Kathy Bates’s Oscar winning performance. But she’s terrific in this too. Along with the rest of the cast. The woman who plays her boss has been in many things but I remember her as the prince’s mother from “Ever After’. I remember REALLY disliking the daughter in this. She seemed f*cked up and ungrateful. But I’m older now and I can appreciate that she was traumatized, confused and didn’t understand what was going on…or what her mother sacrificed to protect her. Anyway…terrific commentary. I love how much fun you always have with these and this one seemed particularly enjoyable for you both. Great choice!

So happy to see more reactions to this film. It's a severely underrated Stephen King film. Kathy is just as good, if not better, than Annie from Misery. Phenomenal film

Stephen King wrote the novel Dolores Claiborne as a direct result of her performance in Misery. He wrote the novel with the full intention of casting her in the movie adaptation.

Something about Stephen King he didnt start out wanting to write horror. He wanted to write sci fi originally.

Kathy Bates said many times that Dolores was the performance she was “most proud of”

As well she should :) I love me some Annie Wilkes (just watched another reactor's Misery reaction recently and re-remembered her amazing work in that), but the Dolores Claiborne character is so layered and transformative. And her performance is just amazing.

Happy Movie Tuesday, David & Marc! 😊 Great reaction you two! This is such a great film! Kathy Bates is fantastic in this movie. I have yet to read the book though. If neither of you have seen it yet, I very highly recommend the 1990 Kathy Bates movie "Misery". Looking forward to the next reaction. 😊

Randee!! Hope you're well. Is this the first Happy Movie Tuesday? I think it may be! lol. You know what- we have both seen Misery, but I suuure wish we hadn't. I would have loved to have done that one as a first time watch. Maybe we can watch it as a commentary one day ;)

Bastard Out of Carolina is another good movie that had Jennifer Jason Leigh. Single White Female is another good with her. The Mommie Dearest references ❤ In the 90s no one even blinked an eye at the crime scene contamination 😂 Shortly after this movie was released the OJ trial was televised and everything changed.

Till the cows come home, I will argue this was the seminal performance of Kathy Bates' career. To date. And you're absolutely right. Ellen Muth (young Selena) doesn't get enough credit for the quality of her performance.

Y’all most definitely if you haven’t need to watch Gerald’s Game. It’s a companion story to Dolores Claiborne. Also by Stephen King.

Stephen King writes great stories that are not supernatural and this one is so well done with the always excellent Kathy Bates, and also another of my highest regarded actors, David Strathairn. He is in one of my favorite movies, L.A. Confidential (1997). Judy Parfitt costars in the best British TV-miniseries dramatization of Pride and Prejudice (1980), with the also perfectly cast Elizabeth Garvie, David Rintoul, and Sabina Franklin.

It's unfortunate this movie was virtually ignored by the awards circuit.... Kathy Bates and Jennifer Jason Leigh were both nominated for a Saturn award. I think Kathy Bates had a couple of other small critics nominations. And the girl who played young Selena actually won supporting actress at the Tokyo International Film Festival... otherwise it got nothing else. It deserved so much more.

I also thought, "Liz Claiborne" and that this was not going to be a good watch. I never gave it any chance. Then, I came upon it when I wanted to watch some Stephen King movies I've never watched. It was exactly how you reacted to it. I was so upset with myself that I couldn't gush about this movie with people who hadn't watched it yet either. As someone who has always said "I am a movie lover," I sure don't watch enough and still have the "it might not be worth it" mindset. I need to get rid of that because there are so many movies that deserve their time in the spotlight. Great reaction.

I have read the book and it's waaaaay better. It also connects with another story by Stephen King called Storm of the Century, which was made into I think a 3 part TV mini-series. Anyway, I would like to recommend one of my FAVORITE classic movie called Mildred Pierce with Joan Crawford. Now, that's one hell of a movie!!!
