HEY Chris!! I'm in the process of packing right now, taking a train from SC to MD to see my 98-year-old Granny and 6-year-old Grandson. Along with my mother and son of course...5 generations together. But I had to stop and watch your reaction to this AMAZING movie. Yes, the subject matter is difficult but it's one of my favorites by Stephen King. It even tops Shawshank. Loved your reaction to it and good to know it's a favorite for you too. Hi I just became a subscriber, this is by far one of the biggest underrated movies. I must debate with you was it Murder, Self Defense or Involuntary man slaughter 🤔. I personally say self-defense and involuntary man slaughter. He was in a drunken range in the process of beating her. She ran away, in his drunken state he slipped and fell. She had the perfect alibi he choked her pushed her to the ground so they could have seen the marks and bruises. So she walks on self-defense 😊.

Misery gets all the love, but Delores Claiborne is the far superior Kathy Bates/Stephen King film imho (and my favorite Kathy Bates performance by far). It always leaves me in awe: the performances, the casting of young Selena, the use of color, the construction of the script and how it takes the viewer on a journey. Even little details like Selena's obsessive use of hand moisturizer and how it clearly (and possibly subconsciously) relates to her feelings of and distancing from her mother. There are far too few reactions to this underrated classic. Thank you!

This movie was filmed in Lunenburg and Blue Rocks, Nova Scotia. The actress playing teenage Selena is Ellen Muth. She was on a show called Dead Like Me. Kathy Bates has said that this is her favourite role. Excellent casting, superb acting by all.

Brilliantly made, excellently acted, Vera is one of my fave supporting characters in any film and the scene where she’s happy to hear her musical pig is the best acting of dementia in any film I’ve seen 😮☺️

Historical Fact: The ferry at the end of the movie is called the Joshua Slocum, named for the first person to circumnavigate the globe alone. Rocking The Boat Fact: While filming the scene on the ferry between her character's mother, Jennifer Jason Leigh became seasick. A student from the local high school was pulled out of class to act as a stand-in. Character Design Fact: Christopher Plummer's character, Inspector John Mackie, sports a prominent scar on the bridge of his nose. According to the director, Taylor Hackford, he wanted Mackie to look disheveled and careworn, so he asked his costume designer to put him in the worst suits she could find, but without success. Plummer took an eye-brow pencil and drew a line across the bridge of his nose, and then shaded it to create the illusion of an ugly, permanent scar. Upon seeing the result, Hackford was astounded by Plummer's transformed appearance, he had his desired Inspector John Mackie.

Chris, you should read this novel! It is my absolute favorite of Stephen King's work. I highly recommend the audio book read by Frances Sternhagen (she played Virginia, the sheriff's wife/deputy in Misery). Her performance is just as iconic as Kathy Bates' in this film. You find out so much more, especially about Vera Donovan - her physical and mental decline as she ages and her increasing dependence on Dolores. It really is a masterpiece. On a side note: this novel came out in 1992 when I was 11 and being sexually abused myself. I used to read it with a flashlight under the covers at night and fantasize that Dolores was my mother and that she would save me from what I was going through.

I love that you mentioned that you can almost hear the words from the book while watching because this happens to be, imo, one of the best Stephen King movie adaptations ever. it's my favorite, anyway. you should definitely read the book because it goes into a lot more depth about just how much Dolores and Vera relied on each other; it's beautiful! this is also my favorite Kathy Bates performance. hands down. so glad you enjoyed the movie and yes, Joe deserved what he got. ❤

Everything about this movie is spectacular from the story all the way to the cinematography. Kathy Baits has never been better and if I had my way she would be an Oscar winner 2 times over for her brilliant performance here and in Misery.I'm glad you enjoyed Dolores Claiborne, it's one of my all-time favorite films. Stephen King is a master storyteller though despite his incredible career still doesn't get the credit he deserves for his abilities and his films shaping the language of cinema and capturing the human experience!

Kathy Bates should have bern nominated, and won a best actress Oscar. Judy Parfitt should been nominated, and won a supporting actress Oscar. I had never heard of Judy Parfitt but certainly have watched many of her performances now. This was a riveting film.

Glad you enjoyed this one. This is my favorite Stephen King adaptation and my favorite performance by Kathy Bates. I think she is better in this than Misery, which I also love. Favorite transition is when she breaks the glass in the window and favorite line is "I ain't doin' any beauty pagents this week." This is one of the only times with Stephen King where the book is really good, but the movie is a bit better. The book is all told in 1st person by Dolores and there are no chapters, just one long dialogue.

Phenomenal movie. Great reaction. Your initial take was everyone’s. You want to believe she’s innocent, that there’s a logical explanation. Her come-backs and quips are priceless. When the story unfolds into marriage, work life, motherhood … it’s not an action movie, but you’re on the edge of your seat. So good!

I honestly don't consider what Dolores did murder. It was self-defense. She may have given him alcohol, she may have needled him, and she may have run, *but* he was the one who got drunk, attacked her, besmirched her daughter, and chased her. It did seem like she was giving him a last chance to admit what he'd done; maybe she thought she'd be able to blackmail him so she could leave with her daughter if he did. Instead, he laid the blame at the feet of the girl, and that's when I think Dolores knew she had no choice. Don't get me started on the sister-like relationship of Dolores and Vera; I could go on for paragraphs. lol This is *such* an underrated movie. The transitions alone are amazing, but the story telling of the adaptation, the directing, the acting, the musical score...really, everything from costuming to lighting is incredibly well done. I'm so glad you decided to watch this, and so glad you appreciated it. It can be a tough watch, but it is definitely worth at least one viewing.

I hate that Selena take the her father side the whole film, until one flashback that she tried to press the whole time. I mean, if my father is abusive towards my mother I will call him a bad father/husband

Kathy Bates is very underrated but she has been excellent in every movie she's been in and I rank her as one of the greatest of actors. She's done easy and difficult characters and doing difficult characters is where most actors fail or won't do because they can't. Dolores Claiborne is an extremely difficult, gritty, and bitter character to portray and Kathy Bates shines in it.

Kathy Bates' Oscar-winning performance in Misery (still somehow the only Oscar a Stephen King movie has ever gotten) inspired him to write a book just in the hopes that she could play the character. And oddly enough, the Dolores Claiborne novel is actually one of those that's impossible to translate to film, with the movie making some severe changes to the story and focus (including inventing Christopher Plummer's character) to work in the new format. And somehow they pulled it off.

It's an impressive feat, in no small part because the entire book is basically a monologue by Delores as she's being questioned. It's my hands-down favorite King adaptation (although I refuse to watch Misery, because that book messed me up - did not need to add visuals). In addition to the brilliant transitions that bridge the past and present, which mimic the mental and emotional states of both Delores & Selena pre & post Joe's death, I love the inquest scene as Selena dismantles the case "What you have here is a 30 page description of a suicide!" Jennifer Jason Leigh is brilliant, even though her character is very hard to like at first, but the best acting in that scene may be John C. Reilly, who has almost no dialogue, but is in a lot of the shots.

Great reaction, and I agree. It's on my top 10 list but a pity that it's so underappreciated. I believe it takes place in Maine where Stephen King was born & most of his stories are set. The husband is one of the greatest villains, & I've disliked the poor actor that so excellently played him ever since. Vera was my favorite.

Ellen Muth, the girl playing young Selena went on to star in the show Dead Like Me for two seasons, as well as a direct to DVD continuation. She's actually from my home town. I briefly met her and got her autograph when this movie came out. Nice girl. :)

Stephen King loved Kathy Bates performance in Misery so much, he wrote Delores Claiborne with her in mind. He even put in his contract that if any film adaptation is made, Kathy has to play Delores or he won't give the rights.

This is one of my favorite adaptations of Stephen King's books, the transitions, the cinematography, and the acting both from Jennifer Jason Leigh and kathy bates are fantastic. This is one of those films I can watch over and over.

The acting in this movie is astounding. Such a great film. A really good adaptation too. The book is written as Dolores speaking in the interview after Vera’s death. No other characters speak except through her. I HIGHLY recommend the audiobook. The story is more in depth, of course, and some details are even more heartbreaking. But I think it’s a rare case where one should see the movie first. I hope you’ll listen because it’s very engrossing.

Ugh, this is one of my favorite films, and there are so few reactions or discussions for it on youtube, so this excited me very much to see in my subscriptions. Of course it's a very difficult film to watch, and not an upper in the slightest. You certainly need to be in the right frame of mind before starting it. Your reaction to the repressed memory ferry scene was heartbreaking, and shows what a deeply kind and empathetic person you are, reacting so strongly in anger despite it being fiction. Just sickening and gut-wrenching, indeed.

Enjoyed your reaction Chris. This is one of my all-time favs. I can't think of an Academy Award that it couldn't- or shouldn't - have been nominated for. Across the board excellence. What a uniformly sublime cast. Even the smaller supporting roles were performed beautifully (like Ellen Muth as young Selena, as well as John C Reilly in his few scenes). But unfortunately, I think its subject matter kept it from getting the type of recognition it deserves (which is a sad statement in and of itself).

Great reaction. I like how the flashbacks aren't done in black and white or sepia tones like most films, they're brighter and more colorful. It's the present that's in harsher tones. Ellen Muth played the younger Selena, she later starred in the excellent but short-lived series "Dead Like Me". Highly recommend, it also has Mandy Patinkin in the cast. It's about a team of grim reapers, there's humor as well as pathos. It only ran for 2 seasons on HBO or Showtime.

I'd suggest you also watch the film Gerald's Game now. Stephen King's books have always had a loose shared universe, but those two books are especially tightly connected, with the eclipse while Dolores kills her husband also featuring prominently in Game, and creating a psychic connection between Dolores and that book's heroine. Of course, the movies don't actually carry any of that over, but it's still neat that they both got such great movies.

When my grandfather was alive, I fed him books all the time since we had the same preference. We both loved Dolores Claiborne. I don't mind Jennifer jason Leigh (My teenage love) anywhere, but in the novel she is just mentioned once or twice. The story is great and I recommend reading it as King would have.

King wrote a couple books that are set on the day of the eclipse. The other one is "Gerald's Game". Interestingly, King's wife, Tabitha King, wrote a novel about two elderly people with a similar relationship to Dolores and Vera called "Caretakers". It's a very good book.

Dolores Claiborne and Gerald's Game were supposed to be the same book to begin with, but he split it into two books, two stories. That's why some themes are so very similar, not just the eclipse.

This movie is a masterpiece. There's not one moment where you lose interest or want to pop into the kitchen for a snack because you are so engrossed in the story. This is Kathy Bates personal favorite career performance, and in my opinion, her best of them all. All of the performances in this film are masterfully portrayed. This film doesn't get the attention it deserves, and has to be the biggest failure in marketing and promoting in the industry. >has to be the biggest failure in marketing and promoting in the industry< I used to think this, but have come to think it's really the subject matter that has kept it from becoming more widely hailed - by both viewers and critics. It deals heavily with familial sexual abuse, which is the primary reveal in the 3rd act. Very sadly, that narrative just hits too close to home for many people. So too, the secondary plot-line involving domestic violence is also too familiar to many people. Add to this its realistic portrayal of aging, mortality and declining health....well not exactly a description of what you'd call an entertaining night at the movies For most people who haven't personally had traumatic experiences with some or all of these topics (like me, thank goodness), they would probably find the film as engrossing and masterful as you and I do (it's one of my all-time favorites). But even if not, I can see how word-or-mouth on this film would be a turn-off to a lot of people, even when recommended to them. So unlike Shawshank, which has become such a huge catalog hit after its lackluster theatrical run, I don't think Dolores Claiborne ever had a shot at making it to that level. Despite its greatness, I think its subject matter alone has kept networks and local stations from showing it at the saturation-level that Shawshank has enjoyed (thankfully, and rightfully so, in my opinion). And even if it had been (which of course is counter-intuitive to my point, but just for argument's sake) I don't think it would have had nearly the same level of repeat viewings by most people - for the very same reasons I mentioned. In any case, this is a longer post than I expected....:). And I agree with everything you said, even that it was a poorly marketed film. I just don't know that it would have made much of a difference had they done a better job.

WOW! Kathy Bates was great in "Misery" and deserved an Oscar for her portrayal of Dolores Claiborne. Read the book in two days and ordered the DVD ....it got lost in the post but I received the replacement today.....PHEW! What that poor woman had to go through. The book is first person narration and I loved that. Hiwever, in the movie the daughter plays second fiddle to her mother and I didn't like that. To be honest: the book is much better however, the film is worth watching because of Kathy Bates alone. Book =5 out of 5 Movie = 4 out of 5 due to Bates !

"That was barely murder" agreed -- self defense has to come into it when you bear in mind that if he had caught her he probably would have killed her. Selena very well may have come home to her abuser as her only guardian and her mother missing if that had not gone down the way it did.

Oh I think in court self defense is incredibly valid. We do know it had a premeditated element at Vera’s pressing, but i think the defense could have won that case.

i love this movie so much. its so underappreciated. its just so well done. jennifer jason leigh does a lot of movies that tackle hard things. bastard out of carolina is one thats well done and also hard to watch in places that has her as one of the leads.

Two things enrage me top of the abuse: when perpetrators are allowed to get away with their crimes because they have money and power; and when the survivors suffer more persecution from society than the actual criminals. A few years ago, I saw a clip from a live talk show where a group of men were talking about the S.A. they experienced. The studio audience were laughing at them. Not crying or demanding justice. LAUGHING. I couldn't wrap my mind around it.

I cant fathom a scenario when anyone talks about their experiences like that and people would laugh. Was it because they were men?

This was a powerful one. All the actors in question were so incredible and Jennifer Jason Leigh was right up there with Kathy Bates for powerhouse performances. I love David Strathairn so it was hard to see him in such a detestable role, but he did a great job with it too. And Vera Donovan's character nearly stole every scene she was in. What a fantastic film, yet it's so full of pain and bleakness it's almost hard to sit through more than once (though I found myself tuning into it again the other day).

Is failing to help her husband & prevent him from falling into a well a criminal act? I don't think so. Had she physically pushed him into the well, that would be a murder. Was it morally wrong not to help? Probably yes. Is it criminal not to help? Probably not. If she would have helped him, she could have easily endangered her own life trying to pull him up & knowing the likelihood of the brittle board breaking & they'd both die falling into the well.

It's a wonderful piece of cinema, and so hard to place in one genre or category. Not easy to watch sometimes but it's not as bad as _Requiem for a Dream_ was (which was also a really well made film, and for me it was Ellen Burstyn's best work). The first flashback they did in _Dolores Claiborne_ was so startling in its change from washed out grays of present day to vivid hues of the past, it was almost like entering Munchkinland, LOL.

I don't think I was ever able to watch this through a second time, but I remember it was amazing and should be as lauded as Shawshank Redemption. I think it's only because it's two women's story that it isn't. This is even better than Green Mile or Stand By Me, but I'm guessing isn't as popular for the same reason. ...I've always wanted to say that! Anyway, Stephen King's drama is outstanding, judging just by these screen adaptations since I haven't read any of them.

I completely agree, in that we still have films segregated as ‘women’s films’ or ‘chick flicks’. It’s ‘The Handmaid’s Tale’, ninety percent of the audience being female, that amazed me. Why? Simply because the leading roles belong to women, and I find that unfortunate. Even more obvious is how rare it is for them to give the reigns to a woman…women directing ? In the eighties, one STILL could say, ‘Ida Lupino’, and that was that…finding a woman director, my god, that only *just* began.

Oh, I hope that you watch it again in that there’s so much to it that it’s an engrossing as a second viewing. You’ll probably appreciate it even more (I always find things that I missed if I rewatch a really good film.)
