१. सफल होने से पहले 18 फ़्लॉप फ़िल्में जिनका हौसला पस्त न कर सकीं वे थे शम्मी कपूर : मेरे आदर्श-पुरुषों में से एक। जिस ज़माने में उन्होंने काम शुरू किया वह ज़माना "ट्रेजडी" का था −लोग फ़िल्में देखने जाते थे कि जी भर के रो सकें। शुरुआत में उनको भी ऐसे ही रोल दिये गये थे, जिनके लिये वे घोर अनुपयुक्त थे। २. कोरियोग्राफ़र से उनको कोई सरोकार न था : वे नृत्य को संगीत का अभिन्न हिस्सा मानते थे व अपने हिसाब से अपने गीत फ़िल्मांकित करवाते थे। कौन सा और कलाकार है जिसने अपने गीत फ़िल्मांकित करवाते हुये आठ फ़ैक्चर खाये हों ? ३. संगीत की ग़ज़ब समझ थी उनमें। (इसीलिये उनका 'नृत्य' भी निराला था।) संभवत: यह बात बहुत कम लोग जानते होंगे कि फ़िल्म 'सिलसिला' का गीत "नीला आसमान सो गया.." उनकी अपनी रचना थी जिसे उन्होंने अमिताभ जी को सप्रेम भेंट कर दिया था। जब नासिर हुसैन-विजय आनंद की फ़िल्म "तीसरी मंज़िल" के लिये RD Burman साहब ने नासिर साहब को approach किया तो नासिर साहब ने कहा : "जाओ मेरे हीरो (शम्मी साहब) को अपनी धुनें सुनाओ−वे मान जाते हैं तो ठीक, वरना उनके पंसदीदा संगीतकार तो शंकर-जयकिशन हैं।" RD Burman साहब ने "दीवाना मुझ सा नहीं इस अंबर के नीचे.." के लिये बनाई अपनी धुन सुनानी शुरू की तो शम्मी कपूर भड़क उठे- "चोरी करते हो? यह धुन तो फ़लाँ नेपाली लोकगीत की धुन है..।" RD Burman साहब ने तुरंत "ओ हसीना ज़ुल्फ़ों वाली.." की धुन सुनाई तो शम्मी साहब प्रभावित हो गये। (यह बात आशा पारेख और स्वयं RD Burman साहब ने 'फूल खिले हैं गुलशन-गुलशन' नामक दूरदर्शन कार्यक्रम में अलग-अलग मौकों पर बताई है।) अपने गीतों की रिकॉर्डिंग में वे सदा मौजूद रहते थे ताकि मोहम्मद रफ़ी साहब उनकी अदाओं के अनुसार अपनी आवाज़ ढाल सकें। फ़िल्म जगत में काम व कला के प्रति इतना समर्पण बस उनके बड़े भाई राज कपूर साहब में ही देखने को मिला है आज तक।

During Rajesh Khanna's superstardom only Dev Anand continued to give hits like Johny Mera Naam, Hare Rama Hare Krishna, Amir Garib, Warrant and a few more as a leading man because he looked much younger.
