I'm 30 and I'm going back to try middle grade because as a kid I missed out. I'm dyslexic and I've tried really hard since 6th form to get better at reading because I struggled through school. So as a kid I used to look at the cool middle grade in the library and think wow that looks so fun, but I'd never pick up the books because when I read, the story wouldn't go into my head and so I'd forget the words I'd just read straight away. Which sucked because I've always loved stories so much growing up. So from year 12 in 6th form I used the kindle read along robot voice and a Nintendo DS game called my word coach to develop my brain into understanding words better and it actually helped so much! Since then I've been to uni and studied psychology for my degree (and a hella lot of reading) and gotten even more help with my dyslexia and now I use a green reading ruler or overlay so the words sink into my brain better and if I'm tired I use the same kindle read along with the screen turned green too. And I'm happy to say I'm good at reading now, I read slower than other people but at least I retain the information I read. So now I've come across your channel Gavin I'm 100% up for having the fun I should of as a kid 😊 nowadays I love fantasy the most, especially political fantasy but is that a subgenre of middle grade? I'm up for any recommendations 😁 thanks 😊

Nowadays what we call "readability" is big, meaning that books should be easy to read. The sweet spot is around twelve year old vocabulary level and I think this is why middle grade is going through a renaissance right now. We don't want big, flowery, super impressive vocab in books. We want something simple, voicy and that will move us. Middle grade has always been doing that. That's why it's great.

I got back into reading middle grade as a means of knowing the territory as a middle grade teacher with a focus on literacy, and what struck me about it was like... there's a level of sophistication to all those books that you can really _only_ grasp as an adult, and especially an adult with an understanding of creative writing. The subtle, wry comedy of How to Train Your Dragon's prose, the eclectic and wildly creative small-scale worldbuilding of Wishtree, the disarmingly funny and honest POV narration of The Watsons Go to Birmingham's child protagonist... kids might absorb some of this stuff, but the full impact necessarily needs more brain matter and life experience. I'm not able to teach anymore, but I still think it's important as an adult to know that territory, because we're all responsible for bringing up the generations that come after us, even if we're not parents or teachers- to say nothing of the personal value these books can bring to the individual. This is the first video of yours Recommended tossed my way, I'll be interested to check out more! I'd like to get back into reading consistently and middle grade is reliably manageable LOL

I'm Dyslexic and Dyspraxic because of that I used to struggle to read/write quite a bit (teacher's in primary school weren't much help). My mam used to read me middle grade from as far back as I can remember and then just before I started secondary school I used a lot of middle grade books to teach myself to read and honestly I still love it. Most of the time now I read a good bit of YA fantasy and contemporary or manga, but I still go back and read middle grade whenever I feel the urge to.

So happy I came across this video. I am a fervent tracker of my reading data and noticed middle grade books I’ve read tend to track higher averages in my ratings. There’s something special about being able to read a book easily enough for the emotion to keep up with the reading, if that makes any sense. Only two books I’ve read this year have made me tear up and both were middle grade. The Thing about Jellyfish and the Julian Chapter from the Wonder Stories. Thank you for this video!

I'm a little late but I really want to comment, so I'm doin' it. I absolutely agree with everything you're saying here, it's the way I see life too. We should always keep a part of childhood in us, the wonder, the whimsy, the feeling that anything is possible (whilst still being realistic but that goes without saying). The world is harsh, so we might a well enjoy beautiful and magical stories. I'm a big defender of the fact that people should read whatever they want and that literature aimed at younger people is not inferior (I even did a school project on that !). I loved what you said about people still loving Disney and family films! It makes so much sense. Since I saw Katherine Rundell at a talk for her ‘Why you should read children’s books..’ book it completely inspired me! I have a few middle grades on my shelves but I really want to get into it more! I feel like childrens/middle grade/young adult sometimes does something that adult books don’t always capture. “ There are good book which are only for adults but there are no good books which are only for children”

This video is so compelling! Some of the language in children's books is beautiful and Literary.... As a teachers it's so nice to work through some of it with children and see it in their writing. You're so right, nobody is too old for MG- Good books do not speak down to the reader and can be enjoyed by everyone! I’ve been watching booktube videos since the very beginning and that’s what got me into reading. I hadn’t really read books for fun since I was a kid. I own so many books now and over the years there’s never really been recommendations for middle grade other than Harry Potter and Percy Jackson. This is how I found Percy Jackson books and I love them and since I found your channel I’ve fallen back in love with middle grade. I seriously think this is my favorite sit down video so far. I love middle grade books! And even though I didn't start really enjoying reading until college (I'm 27 now😳) I am beyond grateful for the Harry Potter series for bringing so much joy into my life. I absolutely love middle grade books. I’m an elder and rediscovered middle grade with the Harry potter books . I then discovered book tube about a year and a half ago. I learned about middle grade March and devoured many mg books. I was sad that there were very few mentions of mg books then I found you. Oh happy day. I am an artist and like a moth to a flame have been drawn to the covers of mg books. Last year I read 287 books. (About a quarter we’re mg books) I have been enamored with the sensitivity of the story telling and how emotionally connective they can be. I was stunned by sweep and the girl that drank the moon and pet (might be YA) I couldn’t agree more with you that mg books are for everyone. Adults can learn so much about kids and what they are feeling. I hope more adults will take a chance and dive in. I’m up to book 105 so far this year (not all mg; I read a lot of different things) and now am loving believathon. Thank you for all you do. Keep it coming. You are one of my favorite btubers.

I think that sometimes a middle grade book/series can be worth more than a YA or adult book. I first started reading Harry Potter when I was 25 and I still love those books as much now at 39 as I did then.

My reason for reading middle grade: It's so imaginative and creative. I feel like many authors DO NOT take the risk that middle grade book's do. One of my favorite middle grade books (Fablehaven) has a boy who gets EATEN BY A FROG that was a statue and then BURPED OUT in a bubble. Like... wut. 😂 It's so ridiculous and you just gotta believe it and go with it. One thing I'm getting more into is middle grade contemporary. There is SO MUCH going on right now in middle grade contemporary. There are a lot of own voices authors bringing up social issues so delicately for younger readers to educate them, but not shove it down their throat OR take away their ignorance too much because they're still kids and they shouldn't have to know about certain things that are so dark. The contemporary writers are expanding to more readers to connect with them. I know we're always talking about diversity and inclusiveness and I feel like middle grade is taking it by storm. 💕

Great video Gavin. Sums up middle grade perfectly. I wasn’t into it until my daughter hit 11 and found herself in the tween reading stage. Ever her take on middle grade was wrong “it’s too baby mum”. She was still looking at the 6 year old stuff though. We’ve discover lots of great books and authors since. “A Pinch of Magic” was an eye opener for her in terms of the types of books that are in the middle grade section. She doesn’t have to grow up before her time. Me on the other hand - I refuse to grow up.

Harry Potter was big for me as a kid, and I still love it. I mean, it did almost get me expelled from private school as a kid haha Middle Grade is amazing, and just because I'm an adult doesn't mean I can't read it! I do read a lot of middle grade out loud with my 7 years old and it is the best feeling... I also read some of them just myself and that's great too! I read a mix of Middle Grade, YA and Adult and they all have beauty and I hate when people look down because the book is "aimed at a younger age"

Middle grade books are the foundation for all books, you don’t jump straight in to adult books or contemporary etc and people forget that they used to read these. If it wasn’t for Gavin and Believathon round 1 I would never have reignited my passion for books at all

The books have a thoroughly heart felt plot, or they are full of adventure/mystery/thriller, just because they are middle grade doesn’t mean they can’t follow the same themes as adult books they do but are just age related in language on context/content. I have come across some absolute beauties of books picking up middle grade and my collection of those are bigger than my adult contemporary and fantasy put together. When you have a really crappy day too, picking up a middle grade can be just the tonic to pick you up

the language can be easier but i have while reading middle grade words that i have never come across even in adult books so i had to look it up in a dictionary. i love the fact that middle grade can really take you on a journey no matter what type of book it is and at the end of every journey you learn something that makes you a better person and this will stay with you. i agree with middle grade making the reader young at heart heck i'm 50 in june but inside i'm wayyyyy younger and i intend to stay that way as i get older.

I recently started getting back into MG (mostly due to your videos😁). I read Malamander last month and adored it. I'm also rereading a childhood favorite, Deltora Quest. It took me awhile to be able to search my library for MG because everything in the US is listed under either "juvenile fiction" or "juvenile literature." Unfortunately, my local libraries are a bit behind as far as e-copies of these books. But they just added A Pinch of Magic and you know I put a hold on that as fast as I could. 😆

I love books for all ages and I go through periods of wanting to read YA or Middle Grade or Adult for the most part. I do find that I have less patience for certain Middle Grade tropes than I do for certain Adult tropes so when I run across too much of a certain trope I have a tendency to take a break from that genre/age group until I find more of said genre/age group that really grabs my attention again.

Smailholm was a 3 star read for me. I loved the lore and world building but I found there were several drawn out moments of internal monologue that made it difficult for me to want to read further. As an adult reader the early chapters of current story vs “other” (no spoilers) were a bit jarring/confusing but I understood that format leads to things being revealed later on. If you’re a younger reader and that’s your initial introduction to that style, this book could be frustrating in the earlier chapters. This felt like an adult look at childlike wonder with awesome unique magical creatures with several responsibilities both appropriate to the historical setting and reflective of full lives that made it feel like some editing could have led to this either better fitting the age group or a different one.

i recently got back into reading middle grade by reading a bunch of LGBT themed books. I wanted to capture that feeling of a kid being accepted and learning who they are when i didnt have that as a kid bc i hadnt figured myself out yet. its funny bc my range of reading anymore goes from MG to adult, its YA that has bored me with its lack of diversity in themes and overall story content. people who drag middle grade also dont put into perspective that some people are also second language learners and that "simple" language is great to get them into the wonders of reading in another language. lets be honest books marketed for adult language learners are nnot the most diverse in terms of theme or interesting

I enjoy reading middle grade on occasion (as you know!), but I've found I'm a little more critical insofar as there are books I read that I recognize I probably would have enjoyed if I were much younger, but as an adult they don't work for me. But then I come across a book like the Girl Who Swallowed the Moon and I realize, aha, that's why I still read them!

Honestly I only stopped reading middelgrade because I almost didnt read books for 2 years. I read like 6 to 12 middelgrades a week when I was younger. Before I watched Jade and you I missed the part of me represented in booktube. I read YA and adult as well but middelgrade is just the best escapism for me. Honestly your videos remind me that I just can talk about middelgrade on my socials cause middelgrade is for everyone.

I love middle grade . It's been a while but what got be back into middle grade and never looked back ... I forget the author but Olives Ocean , than it was Rick Roradin[sp] [idk why I feel HP is young adult though] L.R. Laffers Theodosia Throckmorton series. But when I was a kid I mosly read Horror Like R.L Stine, Louis Duncan[I think shes young adult, but read her in 6-8th grade] and the Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark [which mosly was in elementary school for me but kept reading them anyway in Middle School]

It's just as you say - not liking middle grade literature is fine. Discounting it as unimportant and less intellectually stimulating, on the other hand, is too far on the elitist spectrum for me. Hell, I didn't like middle grade literature when I was in their target age group, but whatever experience came with the years thereafter has let me look at middle grade lit from a different perspective. As a linguist and a translator by trade, I follow the trends in language changes. As a literary major, I observe with a more critical eye the messages that a younger person than me might obtain from a book. As a family member, I fuel my niece and nephew's passion for reading and for developing their creativity and personalities. Finally, as an individual, I tune in to my younger self. I firmly believe that if you do not carry even a small bit of the child you were within yourself, if turn your back on mirth and nostalgia, then you will never be satisfied with your life at any age.
