Crunch Mode with a good Tubescreamer would be killer. The fuzz on the other distortion channel is a little much for me but still absolutely usable. Great demo Glen.

Slo's crunch channel traditionally works better with a Klon type pedal. I'd like to hear if this one is an exception.

From my experience, tubescreamers color the sound in an undesirable way. I think I agree with the person who said a boost pedal like a Klon would be more ideal.

Mike Soldano lives locally here in the Seattle area. I've had the pleasure of playing a few shows with him when he was playing pedal steel. Super humble and kind guy. This was probably 8-10 years ago. Way back then he was already trying to make quality affordable options for everyday people. He had a deal with Jet City Amps making affordable tube amps. In talking with him you could tell he genuinely loved music and musicians and wanted to make quality gear accessible.

Which is nuts because most of the lunchbox amps were full tube amps when this trend started. Orange Tiny Terror, Vox Nighttrain, Jet City JCA20, etc. And we're starting now to see hybrid amps and solid state amps using JFETs. Solid state amp tech has really gotten so good in the last 10-15 years.

I’ve always wondered who rolls up to live gigs with a tube Soldano full stack and a custom Les Paul. That’s like displaying a stack of $13,000 dollars in front of a room full of drunks, druggies, antisocial psychopaths, or jealous haters waiting to “accidentally” spill their beer into your speaker grill. And if you don’t want to risk the luxury gear at a gig, is it really worth considering it “professional” equipment? Give me a ‘90’s Carvin 2x12 with a Metal Zone, a red Charvel from a pawn shop, tell me i suck and spill your piss beer all over my gear, and I’m still sleeping like a baby later that night 👌🏻

So I have a carvin vintage 50 head, carvin birch 412 cab, heavy as hell. That rig sounds sweet. I got 500 in it, used, near mint. So I run that now, using the mini's preamp. I'd put it up against any slo or avenger. The tube pwr amp of the carvin made that mini come to life. Fantastic!

I'm an old school tube snob--these mini heads have that "sound", but more importantly, the "feel" of a tube amp. With the feigned "tube shortage" (much like gas, there is no shortage, just greedy tube companies wanting moolah), this is a great option. 30 watts is plenty for live situations if the cab is mic'd.

When I was using a Marshall DSL and 1960A cab I always got my `proper heavy` tone through the crunch channel, set it to moderate amount of crunch and then used a Tube Screamer pedal set to just a touch of overdrive and passed that on to a valve preamp pedal like Laney Ironheart or Seymour Duncan Twin classic and that was where I dialed things up if needed to get my fave thrash tones or beyond ........... overall I could achieve a very articulate and clanky chugger sound which was my most used tone ......... usually modeled after Gary Holt`s tones from Exodus
@noiselabproject96592 жыл бұрын
now I`m doing that sort of thing in my small home studio in a more compact form by using just the valve preamp from an Orange Micro Dark ( by tapping into the insert out on the back to bypass its little solid state amp ) and then passing that on to an old Rackmount Valvestate Pro 120/120 power amp which then goes on to either a 1 or 2 speaker Cab that I made that have either the same speaker as they use in a 1960A cab or 2 speakers that they use in a 1960AV cab ...... and I still use the tube screamer on low settings too ............. and the result = still an articulate but crushing sound even at low vols ..................... smokin`

Glenn, this may be a total newbie question but I’m curious about mixing a 4x12 with a 1x12 and what mic types to try when doing so. I’ve been trying to get my own unique sound and with a Helix I have the opportunity to try all kinds of shit. The problem of course is too many options. Each cab lets you choose so many factors I just don’t know where to start. So I’m leaving most everything set to default except the actual cabinet and possibly microphone type. What I’m not familiar with is the sonic properties of a 1x12 vs a 4x12 or even if that’s worth a try. If so what 1x12 would be a good fit? Thanks for everything, you’ve really helped me out with your videos and tutorials. It’s much appreciated.

@allendean98072 жыл бұрын
@@InTheSh8 wow. Did you just jump in my ass about the Jet City amps? I had a JCA-50, and loved it! Took pedals great, but it was top end fizzy. That’s just the facts. I wasn’t talking shit about JET City amps. For the money, they are fantastic for live playing. I ran mine through a four cable line 6 multi effect into a Marshall 1960DM-b cab. However, instead of the jet city, i changed up to a Carvin Valvemaster 100 head, which took pedals like an old Hiwatt. Then i ran an old school board with boutique Skreddy gain, fuzz, phaser and echo pedals. I also had an old DOD EQ and a boss chorus. I found the cleaner amp was a better platform for pedals, and it was so loud i could never turn it up past 3 for fear of blowing my cab. The Jet City had its limitations, as the louder it got, the more top end sizzle. It got almost fuzz box fizzy. But i liked the amp. It was good. Now, if you want a SS amp that will make your head blow up, check out the fender London reverbs from the 80’s. Those things are amazing. 5-band Eq, Jensen speakers, all around dirt dealer.

lol "solid state version of a tube amp" Holy shit I've been sent back in time to the year 1998 and I'm back in Guitar Center looking for any solid state amp that doesn't market wank about "sounds just like a tube amp!" That Mini amp sounds SO transistor-y, I FUCKING LOVE IT. I'd run through a mono 31 band eq and start killing freqs top-down until that hiss goes away from the palm mutes. The new sounds are in transistors anyway. And software. Of course my software. . . I can't turn off the Soldano sim. It sounds so fucking good. Still prefer my Stage 112se for transistor amp overall. So much I bought 2 for left/right. They can power externals so I have them powering the 12s and 15s. Also loved how Fender puts in pictures of amp settings to go for to get you in the neighborhood of different sounds. Was anything like that in there?
