I just want to say thank you. When I was in my early 20's I struggled with epilepsy. After many doctors and medications I somehow became seizure free for 10yrs and was able to stop taking medication. About 8 months ago the seizures started again. I was devastated. It seemed that in the course of 10yrs nothing had changed as far as understanding, curing or detecting. The seizures I experience now come on much quicker and more suddenly than before. I'm only recently learning to accept my epilepsy. I'm learning how to let go of the fear. The creation of this AI smartwatch has given me hope. The knowledge that people like you are looking for ways to improve our lives (not just people with epilepsy but our loved ones as well) and possibly save them.... words cannot describe the feeling.. I can only say thank you.

There might actually be more hope. There’s this quantum computer that they’re making that has ridiculous and I mean ridiculous capacity to understand impossibilities like reality being in 2 different states. Something of this magnitude can easily create cures to cancer, ALL mental illnesses, etc. But of course...it’s a double edge sword. Someone can potentially find a way to mass produce nuclear weapons with it.

I have temporal lobe epilepsy and have one of these embrace watches. As I usually have focal seizures without convulsions that don't threaten my life, the watch doesn't respond to those. But I've had a few generalized convulsive episodes where I've gone into cyanosis and needed help. This watch got my family to me in one of those situations (the only one that's occurred after I got it). I've had far more false alarms, sure, but I'll take that over no alarms at all. Thank you Ms. Picard and Empatica. Let's keep working to manage epilepsy.

We got this watch for my older mom who lives in another state and it alerts me each time it goes off. So far its been a false alarm each time because she was pushing a grocery cart over a bumpy parking lot or brushing her teeth with an electric toothbrush or something like that. It hasn't caught any of her smaller seizures where she wasn't convulsing because it was still all just in her brain. I've called to talk to her and noticed something off and turned out they were small seizures. When it does go off it vibrates so that if it is a false alarm the user can tap it and hold the display to signal they are ok. She can't feel the vibration very well so we have a lot of minor scares when we don't hear from her right away. We've had to cancel emergency services before. Still, this watch has helped give my family a lot more peace of mind. Just wish it was a little easier to use with an actual display instead of the dots (which confuse her) and that it wouldn't run down her phone battery quite so much since it requires bluetooth to a smart phone to work. I know someday it won't be a false alarm so we keep treating each time like its the real deal.

Hi- Thanks, TED, and to all who help share our work at MIT (and Children's Hospital Boston, and Empatica, and also many other wonderful medical partners). Together we can help stop the wrongful stigmatizing of epilepsy and make sure everybody learns how to reduce the risk of SUDEP. For those who are asking about the watch running AI (machine learning) and now cleared by FDA for monitoring grand mal seizures, it is available from empatica.com .

I have known about this watch, and I have been trying to figure out if insurance will help pay for it. Do you know or have any advice? I'm 41 w/JME since age 20, and still have epileptic activity on EEG, with medication. It seems I have nocturnal seizures now, after I had status epilepticus in 2011. I am scared bc I do primarily live by myself. Thank you :)

After losing consciousness and having a convulsing seizure in elementary school, I was diagnosed as epileptic and put on medicine. I stopped taking the meds after a while, and never had a seizure again. I'm almost 30, still never had one since. That wasn't my first seizure, though. My mom believes I had one as a baby where I completely zoned out and got in a trance. I really want to be able to study my own brain to figure out why I had the second one.

@Destiny B Nope, I haven't had any type of follow up in years. I do remember at the time I was at school, in the lunch room and looked up at a light that was flickering. You'd think flashing lights would be my trigger, but I've seen flashing images since then and I've never had another reaction.

I was born with epilepsy and cerebral palsy. I have a twin brother, i was born first. My brother was born with no problems. I take phenytoin for my epilepsy, as a child I was on phenabarbatone, then at 14 i was put on Epilim 500mg. Which caused me to gain lots of weight. I went to live in Canada for a few years where I was taken off eperlim & switched to phenytoin. Which I still take today. As a child I had grand mal seizures, which doctors said I would grow out of. Which I did, but I now have petit mal. It' feels weird when I have it, i can hear all thats going on around me, but ppl and any noise, sound much louder, plus it feels like I'm floating on water. Before the seizure I get the smell like burnt toast. I can have a seizure at any time, night or day. Unpredictable. I feel a little confused when I come round, which lasts for a couple of minutes, then I'm back with you again. Usually a cup of tea helps me recover. I read a lot of blogs where people who shared their testimonies kept mentioning Anti-seizure Herbal medication. I searched for a website I just followed the email address of Doctor Patrick that was shared on these testimonies; I got lucky when I got a reply from Dr. Patrick. I followed his instruction, used Herbal Medicine in less than 2 months, I was already cure because of the changes I was seeing. Within a period of 5 months, I was cured totally forever. I went back to my neurologist, I was checked up and marked epilepsy free. If you need his help you can Contact this herbal doctor via his email herbalmedicalhome@gmail.com and WhatsApp connection is +2348102558553 for help, facebook.com/Doctor-Patrick-119465009919223. . .

This watch is meant for communicating individuals not non communicating autistic people. My son has one and all it does it is false alarms that even wake him up at night. He does not communicate nor understand how to shut it off when it goes off. It does not measure his sleep pattern if he wakes up to go to the washroom and goes back to sleep. The watch is no more than an overpriced fit bit watch with a motion sensor.

@@charliewalton3942 Well the peaks are gigantic, there would be no problem detecting those even with analog comparator. They may be trying to colect different data like movement / heartrate alongside the conductance, and trying to teach the AI to detect seizure from those signals instead, so any regular fittracker could be used.

Get checked out. Ice pick headache, ADEAF... Also vestibular migraine came up in Google. Might be something else entirely. Dr needed for context otherwise symptoms might be confused. There are medical alerts here in Australia where you can push the button (or train the dog to) and it automatically sends your location to the emergency team who send ambulant services to where you are. I have had seizures and collapses myself and also have assistance dog and about to get a new assistance dog (as the other is due for retirement) with even further training regarding seizures and collapses - Many dogs can sense the oncoming of seizures well before they occur (around 20 minutes with some dogs and certain training) which can also be a way for the patient to be able to get to a safe location (like a chair or bed or away from hard and sharp surfaces) and to take any preventative measures if they have them (such as medication or electrolytes etc) as well as give them enough time to contact emergency services or carers (or the like) @@prof.rwpicard5368
