The ground team were the ones who fucked up the conversion right, and get this: Pearson DOUBLE CHECKED the conversion himself personally...but since the incorrect conversion rate value given by Canada Air corporate was the same, he arrived at the same fuel amount as the ground team. This combined with the faulty fuel sensor, that again, the ground technicians provided meant that it was borderline impossible for this guy to have predicted + averted the entire clusterfuck. Any landing everyone can walk away from is a win, especially when it's a commercial airliner with no fuel. Similar thing happened years later to an Air Transat flight crossing the Atlantic, I think on a flight from Toronto to Lisbon. Rain out of fuel mid way through, in this case due to a major fuel leak from improper maintenanc , and had to land on a US air force base on the Azores islands.

@@xdemoted it wasn’t meant to be a proper term, it’s a joke. There is a driving style known as Tokyo drifting where you put the car into an intentional skid and essentially drive sideways, hence ‘Canada drift’ BTW this is not crabbing it a slip. Crabbing is very commonplace, off setting drift caused by crosswind by flying into wind to maintain the desired track. What the pilot was doing here was increasing drag by flying sideways, to ovoid overshooting the runway.

I really cannot believe you left the most impressive part of the story out: The fact the pilot actually did a huge forward slip in a 767 to scrub off speed while descending to the runway. It had NEVER been done before, (at least in a 767 with no engine power) even during test flights. The plane was also nicknamed the Gimli Glider.
@Goabnb94
@Goabnb94 4 жыл бұрын
Every test in a simulator afterward, all crashed. What works in theory doesn't always work in practice, and what doesn't work in theory may work in practice. Could be the simulator isn't perfect either. Of course, going into the simulator you knew the situation and what you were trying to do, and you don't have the stress of trying to save your own life and the lives of everybody on board.

What is a forward slip? What is a huge forward slip? Why is the fact that there’s no engine power matter? (Might be inferred from first two answers) Asking to appreciate the facts more
@Goabnb94
@Goabnb94 4 жыл бұрын
@@TheCho22 I'm sure I'm probably using the wrong terminology, but its when the pilot turns the rudder one way, and the flaps on the wings the other way. So the rudder is trying to pull the plane to the side, and the wings are counteracting this motion. As a result, the plane ends up travelling more on its side. Imagine sitting in a plane seat facing north. You expect the nose to be heading north and the wings east-west orientation, but in a slip the nose might be pointing north-east, the wings northwest-southwest orientation, but you're still travelling north. This procedure is done in gliders or single engine turbo-props where there body is flexible, light and not much instruments or components. It had never been done in a passenger jet, and there was no guarantee it would work, that the plane would remain airbourne, or that the wings could handle the forces and not break up. There was also no guarantee the pilots would be able to pull the plane out of this orientation in order to land. This is also why a lack of engines matter, there is no pulling out of it if things go wrong. There was also no engine power to brake with so they had to drop their speed and still have the right approach to land on the runway.

Goabnb94 Rudder left, ailerons right. The term you were looking for is called “crabbing”. Looking down from above, the plane faces 15-30 degrees to the left, but continues traveling straight towards the runway. It’s not usually done because it’s never needed to. It was not impressive that the plane held together, it was impressive given how unorthodox it was.

Well because the nose gear had collapsed, the entire plane stood at an angle on the runway/dragstrip, as a result the emergency slides were also at an angle. This resulted is some passengers getting some minor injuries when getting off the plane. But yeah, there were no major injuries in this incident, only minor ones.
@GThu1
@GThu1 4 жыл бұрын
Hands down, this was the hardest and best pilot performance in my opinion. The video missed an important part: how he slowed the aircarft to be able to land this way. He just turned the airplane 50-60º for a while to have much bigger air resistance, which slow them very efficiently. Only his nationality were wrong to became really famous by it.

@@Uniquaization Slipping is when you use cross controls such as left aileron and right rudder. It causes the air plane to fly a little sideways and is mainly used when you need to lose a little altitude fairly quickly. You would need to do this so that you touch down at the start of the runway rather than the middle of it.

@brianobrian6637 5 жыл бұрын
@@cixlo Ultimately, it comes down to the P.i.C. (pilot in command) & It's always easy to fault someone in life & always in business! From a commercial Pilot's perspective; I feel the upper management at Air Canada holds significant liability in this. I am also aware of & openly acknowledging, surprisingly, this is the first account of this incident I have heard ! While highly entertaining & lol funny, this was an avoidable situation from the start. Again, going off what I learned here & while people @ large tend to almost "need?" To place blame on one or more persons. Had it not been for these 2 Pilot's heroic reaction to certain disaster, the pain & suffering, possible physical destruction (my immediate fear would be a school or similar structure being unavoidable in an almost nearly crippled aircraft) Would have affected hundreds of people & families, possibly more. Again, I'm not familiar with this particular incident & my opinion is just that. Quite simply, I would HIGHLY agree the break down in communication contributed heavily & almost certainly would have avoided it! Where or who dropped that ball, idk enough to make a statement of such immense proportions. This could quite easily have been on another, much less entertaining video! My largest hope is that Air Canada & the entire aviation community took appropriate measures to be certain that this would not even be possible to have ever, happen again ! Failure by design to an extent & in aviation, especially commercial aviation! Knowing this potential was lurking & allowing it to exist, I feel it was someone other than the pilot's who are to blame & could have/SHOULD have, outright prevented, or even communicated appropriately, like you mentioned, preventing almost certain disaster! Absolute bottom line for me, is it's a stressful enviroment; When lives are at stake, any & every possible safety measure should not only be implemented, rather become procedure as most aspect's of flight are. Lol funny to hear it told as was, but T.G. 2 Pilot's may/may not have made a major oversight, They redeemed themselves in my book @ the end of the day! Amen

The impressive story of the Gimli Glider and a feat of luck, ability and experience from the crew. The captain and the first officer had military background. The captain had gliding experience. The first officer was stationed in that abandoned military airbase years before, so he knew were to find it. The engineer (a position no longer available in modern planes) was very good at altitude drop calculations. Also the errors from the earth crew that make a miscalculation in the convertion of units and a failure in one onboard computer that measured the amount of fuel were to blame.

He didn't mention that Captain Pearson was one hell of a badass! Since they were still too high and if they had dived, then they would've landed too fast so he decided to put the 767 into a side slip which is the aviation equivalent of *DRIFTING.*

@@the6ix72 Well, a side slip is not ideal to reduce altitude rapidly. If they did not have flaps available, then a forward slip works well - although I don't know how difficult that would be in such a large aircraft. And not using flaps means that it doesn't float as much on ground effect when you straighten the craft out just before it touches the ground.
@andrewtaco
@andrewtaco 5 жыл бұрын
@@buggsy5 yes true. That is very true. But here's the thing, flaps dont give the plane a "floating" effect, flaps are there to increase lift but also drag a the same time. Which is ideal on landing but it was impossible to lower in their situation since flaps are controlled by hydraulic fluids and not electricity.

This brought to mind a near series of catastrophes that occurred to a major US carrier in the 80s I worked for. A faulty software change to the floating point logic that governed fuel use was installed in the system that predicted fuel use in flight plans, and planes throughout the US were reporting running out of fuel far short of their destinations. Fortunately, they all made alternate sites, the problem was identified, and the software removed. One of the scariest scenarios I experienced in my 34 years there.

I was a military US Navy jet pilot. I always checked all my gauges and instruments before take-off. It's called a CHECKLIST! That's why they were initially punished. They should have noted low fuel tanks before take off.

5k flights over the US full of passengers right now? Today is April 10th, 2020. The skies are quiet. I live under flight routes for a bunch of airports within 50 miles of me... I've never heard the skies this quiet.
