I am French. Even if I am not from Brittany at all, I would be really sad to see that language die. I am really busy with my work and studies at the moment. But after I graduate and have more free time, I would like to learn Breton to help this culture and language to stay alive.

@@ommsterlitz1805 I don't know what's your point but the last time I checked there are schools in Wales which use Welsh as the language of instruction which is really essential to the survival of an endangered language. As far as I know the same was proposed for Breton in France but it was rejected since according to the law, French should be the sole language of education.

The song recounts the triumphal return from exile of Duke Jean IV, to reconquer his duchy, after having been driven out six years earlier by his subjects. However, the independence of the duchy being even more threatened without him than with him, the Breton lords had sent a delegation to England where he had found refuge to ask him to return. He then landed in Dinard on August 3, 1379 to regain the throne of Brittany. The "traitor" at the end of the song would be the Breton knight Bertrand Du Guesclin constable of France.

Interesting to see that bretons called the french C’hallaoued (based on gauls) and Cornish called them Frankyon, based on the franks
@DoubleWhopperWithCheese Жыл бұрын
@@masterdeetectiv9520 my best guess would be because of the bretons having much more interaction with gaulish peoples than other celtic groups. The Welsh and Cornish don't have a specifically derived word, it's just "gal" in both. Also would be relevant to mention that revived cornish contains many loan words from Welsh, Breton and English.

Because it would fragment the nation. I think it's the same in all countries, the nation-state system is quite recent. Not only Bretons, but also Occitans/Provençals, Alsatians, Basques etc... I'm aware of that, which is a shame, Celtic langauges are really beautiful and yet theyre spoken by so little... Similar case with Ireland, they got their Irish but mostly speak their former opressors language. If there would be a free Breton Country they could have Breton and French like Ireland with Irish and English. But Bretons should be educated about their historical oppresion by ever-expansionist France and aim to preserve their unique culture.
@danziger9996 Жыл бұрын
@@The_Gur Time to decolonize their own territories. Europeans aren't interested (enough) in their own cultures. We always talk about how bad our ancestors were in former overseas colonies, but when it comes to regional suppressed cultures nobody gives a damn. Europe is going downhill. 😞

@gamermapper8 ай бұрын
@@danziger9996 I actually disagree. The nationalist and minority language movements are much stronger for Europe than for the rest of the world. You really underestimate them. For God's sake, most of Africa that's already independent still largely uses European languages, cultures and identities. Go say in Africa that you think books and scientific documents should be written in their own African languages, they'll think you're crazy. Even the smallest villages only write down French and English, never any other language. In comparaison, a lot of stuff in Corsica and even Brittany is written in their languages, and you can find plenty of content in these languages on the Internet. And I'm not even talking about Native Americans, even tho they've been quite literally oppressed and their lands stolen, they don't even have any serious movement for independence and calling their homelands occupied, rather merely wanting basic land rights from the colonial government.
