Being locked into an ecosystem seems like a really bad move for the consumer. They've gotta sweeten the deal a little more if they expect people to accept it, as they aren't truly offering anything special to warrant a subscription service. I get it, they offer a "Free Version" but...for how long? If they decide that they no longer want to offer a free version tomorrow, where does that leave the users? This could no doubt be a real issue if more manufacturers decide to start doing this. Offer CONSIDERABLY cheaper hardware, Then maybe it would warrant a software aubscription.... However, there are way better options out there. It's just up to the consumer to look for them. Thankfully resin printers aren't the first option for most people entering the 3D printer space. Great review on the overall experience. Everything that you're mentioning is something that new users should take into account before purchasing... and NOT just how the unit works. Hopefully we won't look back at this review and say "Well, this is how it started." Still creeps me out that it looks like they're trying to lock users into a subscription service for their hobby.

I've found the best results for curing most resins to be to cure them in a beaker of warm water. When I do not do this, their surface ends up oily and requires very good cleaning so that my paint sticks them. I read somewhere that most resins require a low oxygen environment to cure and like to be slightly warm. Ergo, hot tap water. I also like to cheat and remove supports before curing, because they're still a little flexible and you are less likely to damage the print by leaving marks in the fully cured resin, but that is a risk calculation tradeoff because you might damage it with fingerprints, fuzz, or glove prints, as Tom mentions.
@ErikScott1283 жыл бұрын
I've been thinking about a resin printer for a while now. The Prusa resin printer is open source, but a lot more expensive, so the choice between it and one of these cheaper options isn't an easy one. With this underhanded move by Chitu, I think the decision is essentially made for me. I'm not going to support this kind of nonsense.

Part of the reason this worked so well for FDM printers is that nobody was even trying to produce low cost hardware. …and don’t forget governments…they do the same thing
There is a solution to the Chitu problem, custom firmware. Find some people who could either code their own firmware, or to pick apart the official stuff and find the setting that checks to see which program sliced models and disable that check.

Still rocking a Prusa Mk2 after 6 years. Still rocking a Mars after 3 years. Still not worried about all this upgraded stuff to print.

Thanks for the great work that you do. I have trouble painting my makes. A vid on what paints work best with resins would be most helpful.
@dr.v6453 жыл бұрын
While I do not like the lock to chitubox, I currently plan to purchase around 2-10 new resin printers per year for the best few years and want to stock with the same ecosystem for all of them for worker training and repeatability reasons. Therefore if they come with a pro copy of the license I likely will never run out of license time for my work. This for me specifically, this ends up not being much of an issue.

So, nice printer, but the Chitu situation makes it a no-go... :P The wash and cure station look quite reasonable, however.

Great video as usual! While it would be interesting to know what extra features are in the paid version I for sure will not get a printer with that kind of lock-in system. I'm very happy with my first fdm-printer (a prusa mini+). I've been tempted to buy a SLA printer, but I will wait until there is an open alternative.

I guess I won't be getting a new Elegoo printer with that Chitu lock in...
@xVolta3 жыл бұрын
Interested in the comparison. Does the locked firmware only apply to the new printers? Other articles and videos led me to think the chitu nonsense hit existing printers as well.
@MadeWithLayers3 жыл бұрын
From what I've read, the lock-in applies to older printers as well if you decide to update their firmware.

I have to admit, it is a bit baffling how a "freedom-sized bottle of Coke" is precisely 2 liters.
@randallbourque13213 жыл бұрын
I am going to guess that is because in the US we have 2 liter soda bottles. The freedom-sized is probably a knock on the US for either our love of freedom (sometimes to much) or the size of the bottle (and our obesity problem).
@harmless68133 жыл бұрын
@@randallbourque1321 It's a nod to the US calling french fries "freedom fries" some years ago. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Freedom_fries
@AlyssaNguyen3 жыл бұрын
@@randallbourque1321 I was referring to the US's stubborn refusal to use metric in all but a few applications, such as drugs (illicit or otherwise), bottled soda and water (available in 4 fl oz and 500 mL increments) and engine displacement. "Freedom size" could have just as easily been 64 fl oz, but the industry settled on 2 L instead.
@SchwachsinnProduzent3 жыл бұрын
Which is interestingly a size that is quite uncommon in Europe. Most cokes you buy here are 0,5l, 0,75l, 1l or 1,5l. But I did once see an abnormal 10l bottle of coke in a store (which is also long gone)
@harmless68133 жыл бұрын
@@SchwachsinnProduzent There are 2l bottles. But they not as popular as the smaller sizes. When I had some, the contents usually got stale before I was able to finish it, so I usually avoid bottles larger than 1l.

@balazszsigmond8263 жыл бұрын
@@yomboprime right now, Chitu systems produce quality stuff. The locking thing in question is the only thing really bad about them. So hacking the system is the way. It would give the market time to develop a good alternative.

Yeah, I definitely want to know what "pro" buys you. Another guy did this for a different bit -- the K40 laser cutters were made after the same model... And now we have LightBurn and K40Whisperer that can control the machine without needing the USB Key or a CorelDraw installation... so Chitubox might be playing with fire there. But I'd love to know "pro" means.

Only $150 for the wash and cure combo? I may have to rethink my current bucket and cheap UV string light approach. A pity about Chitubox. I use the software quite happily but I'm not ok with locking the ecosystem down. Pity because in all other respects the machine seems damn impressive.

Well, I have been looking at picking up a resin printer for quite a while. I currently have 4 FDM printers and haven't been in that much of a hurry. However I have been into miniatures as of late so having a resin printer is sort of needed at this point. Although, if Elegoo is going to lock the printer to down to the basic Chitu Box and then charge $170 a year for the Pro version I'm buying another printer. It's one thing to pay a one time fee for the software license but not a subscription especially at that price point. I guess it's either the Anycubic Photon Mono 4K or the Phrozen Sonic Mini 4K then. Sorry Elegoo, you got greedy and lost a customer...

The Mars 3 sounds great, I'm just wondering how badly not having the pro version of the software would effect me, and if the free version might become a paid-product down the line.
