I appreciate that you guys always include the water parameters! I live in Colorado and my water is generally moderately hard with a pH that hovers around 7.8-8.0, so seeing you guys keep all these fish in similar water conditions makes it easier for me to figure out what works with my water parameters.

@@thingamatorium8736Hello fellow Coloradan! I actually went to Neptune's and saw some microrasboras for the first time, and I was blown away by how tiny they really were! They were about as long as my pinky nail is wide.
@HeyItsJA2 жыл бұрын
@@thingamatorium8736 Yeah, more like Highlands Ranch! Near the old Ferrari dealership. Neptune's Tropical Fish, I used to go there for more non-traditional fish (nano, cichlids, etc., but even their platies and tetras live longer for me than Petco ones do), and they have a pretty good selection of plants now especially since they don't use CO2 in any of their tanks. Great people, always happy to test water and make recommendations, and they don't alter their water chemistry (so pH 7.8-8.2 and moderately hard water) which certainly helps with the acclimation process at home. They also have saltwater which I haven't gotten into yet, but it's always cool to look around. Plus they have this cockatoo behind the front desk that likes to say hello to everyone in the store 😂

Boraras maculatus at pH 8.2?! 😭 I’m amazed that you can keep them alive at such a high pH, let alone breed them! I keep mine around pH 5 and KH 1, with Boraras brigittae, Trigonopoma gracile, Pangio semicincta and Mystus bimaculatus. Had them for many years already, and they’re much more intensely red than the fish in your video

Other than the neon blue Rasbora we keep all of them at those water parameters - live for years without any issues.

I appreciate all the good work you do to provide quality information to aquarium hobbyists, and of course I believe that it IS possible to keep blackwater fish like Boraras maculatus in very hard water conditions. I see that nowadays people are even acclimatizing marine clown fish to freshwater aquariums. In my opinion, though, just because something’s possible doesn’t make it responsible husbandry.

They need a "dither fish", or a fish that occupies the open water that will show them that its safe. I would research "best dither fish" and see what appeals to you, then just confirm that particular fish is compatible with your Rasboras specifically

@@heatherebers2127 hi Heather, they live with pymae corys and the temperature is 24 degrees Celsius. I am Dutch 😁. According to the books this should be just fine. What do you think?
@Ekster772 жыл бұрын
@@VinylUnboxings Hi, thank you for answering 🙏. They live with a group of 8 pygmae corys and honestly I don't have more space for other fish. I have a 34 litres Fluval Flex tank. I don't think that is suitable for more fish an especially not for for example outgoing fish like guppies. I also don't want life bearers because of all the fry. Here in Holland shops won't take your fish when you get too many. I have lots of plants, floating plants and wood in my aquarium. I thought they would be at at ease because of that, but unfortunately not. I'm kind of at the point of giving up on the hobby... What I don't understand is the fact that they do swim from 18.00 hours till 22.00 hours after they have eaten. They seem perfectly at ease and swim around nicely. Why not during the day?
@heatherebers21272 жыл бұрын
@@Ekster77 I am by no means an expert, I just started the hobby in June, just to throw that out there 😂. If your tank is heavily planted then I assume you have pretty decent lights. Maybe it’s a bit too bright? Mine hang out on the top column but in the corner and side of the glass (where there isn’t direct light), they play in the air stone bubbles, chill with the neon tetras (the only other fish), sprint to in the Java fern roots when spooked, and lay eggs in the Java moss under a mopani wood ‘cave’(at least I assume that’s what they are doing). In a different tank, my mollies used to be super outgoing until I upgraded my lights (AI Prime Planted). One mollie just hangs out in the back under a piece of mopani wood (no she’s not pregnant), she won’t even come out if I’m feeding everyone. I am rescaping the tank so she can have more room in shade. I’m also hoping for babies from other females to fill the tank out more so she feels more comfortable (it’s a 40g with with eight, two inch fish, I have lots of room). She used to be sooo outgoing ugh, it is upsetting to see your fish acting different than they should. I hope you find ideas to make them more comfortable. Best of luck! I
