Ohai! For a change a few personal words. My name is Philipp and I started this channel almost seven years ago - you don’t know my voice but you have heard my words because I write most of our scripts. Oh boy. This was a hard video to make. Gratitude felt vaguely risky to do as a topic. It has this aura of cheap Instagram hashtag self help stuff. Some of you will hate this video deeply, and the thought of that made me pretty anxious writing it. Gratitude was not supposed to be a video topic originally. Just like the Nihilism and Loneliness videos, the script was based on personal struggles and part of the process of dealing with them. And so it felt right to make gratitude a video too. But Kurzgesagt is not a self help channel, so we'll keep this sort of content at roughly one or two per year. We hope they are helpful to some of you. If you care for my take on how to practice Gratitude, we made a Kurzgesagt Gratitude journal to combine the science with practical tips. shop.kurzgesagt.org/ Edit: PRE-ORDER is available again. Please note: You don’t need to buy this or anything else to practice gratitude - you only need a pen, a piece of paper and 5 minutes. Thank you for watching our videos and reading this comment. Being able to do Kurzgesagt means a lot. To me and the whole team. - Philipp

You attract what you think about most. If you think of a lack of something then you get more of it. If you believe you don't have enough money then you find yourself in situations where you end up reading about it, finding people to discuss it, and eventually you are surrounded by the things you didn't want. The way I frame it in my mind is that if I am about to crash a car, I focus on the tree or object I don't want to hit but since that's what I am focused on, I end up hitting it. Its a difficult concept to grasp but when you understand it then it can help. Good luck!

Man i remember an event when i was young and had a very narcissistic mind and thought of me as a tough guy, i was studying to be a Chef in an small institute...and we had this French culinary teacher, that was really a pain in the ass, i mean it, she was extremely severe and calculating in how she directed and looked at students, she was frightening, but one day, she talked to us in a very different way, she started to talk about how grateful we all should be of having studies, having the opportunity to be in an institute that was prestigious, and then she started to talk about her life, the only thing i remember is she saying: "when i open the shower knob in the morning and water starts flowing and splashing my face and pour all my body...i thank God and life, for having this...". And i was like: "but its just water" At that time...i took it for granted, i was still young and immature to know what it meant...until it hit me later, as there was a severe drought in one part of Africa in the news and i saw how people were dying because there was no water...it might sound silly but that made me redefine my whole mindset, i was starting to feel..grateful for being able to breathe, for the sunshine, for the rain, for the water, for having full organs, and healthy, for having a family and some friends (as i was not that social) and for being able to have electricity and playing in my small PC, this sole idea changed me forever and was finally solidified when i read a quote from Cormac Maccarthy´s the great american writer: "“You never know what worse luck your bad luck has saved you from.” ― Cormac McCarthy, No Country for Old Men". Your life can always be turned upside down, don´t take it for granted, enjoy it with a humble and grateful mindset and you will apreciate every bit of it...

@@MichaelAbreu I own the old Odyssey and the Quest. The Odyssey has many better features when comparing: + Resolution on PC VR titles + FOV + More comfortable for long play sessions + Extremely easy to use as Windows 10 has it's integration built in. + Sim racing and flying games, this is the best hands down. The Quest is a beast though: + Mobility with no wires (Cannot stress enough, it's another level going wireless) + Tracking and tracking volume is much better than Odyssey (more cameras and dedicated processor onboard) + Recent addition of PC VR support (works unbelievably well but res is definitely lower when directly comparing) + Future updates (maybe wireless PC VR, hand tracking etc) + Cross buy with Oculus Rift games (not all but quite a few) along with SteamVR etc The above is a quick comparison but if you can afford it, the Quest is the better choice for value and future extensibility. If you cant afford the extra, the Odyssey is a fantastic entry into the market. If you're a sim person, Odyssey is the hands down winner though.

Ehhh I'm not so sure. Giving that disclaimer was sort of mandated because of how bad it would look if they didn't. > Video about how to be happier (something which goes right to the core of what literally everyone wants) > In the video, explain that the study results show you can improve it on your own with no products. > We made a book which tells you how to be happier. It does seem like a bit of an exploitative bit of merch. Playing on everyone's desire to be happier and flying under the banner of study-informed, while not actually adding anything proven to work in those studies. It would not reflect well on them if they didn't address that.

@@RiotousRaichu Sometimes the most obvious things can hide in plain sight, and we need a reminder every now and then. The idea behind the phrase is that life is all about perspective; if you are always thinking about what you don't have, you will never have enough, so it's important to take a step back occasionally and appreciate what you already have. In the frame of belief, this means that whatever you truly believe, you will eventually convince yourself of, leading to a skewed understanding of the actual state of your life and of those around you. Just remember this: "Whether you think you can, or you think you can't, you're right"

@@konigstiger3252 thats not the point, the point is you can still try to get your dream job , but at the same time you can appreciate the journey and be grateful for what you have so far. For instance you can be grateful for having a good relationship, loving family or a house , but still you can strive to have a more satisfying job or have your own business. Wanting things is not bad , its just how we go about it is bad. Saying that 'oh I am working in this job and its not my dream job , I am a failure and I hate my life, its terrible' never helped anyone , rather than that you can be like 'I have this job its not my dream job but I like it , I like the people Im working with , I will try to do my best to get a better job , but I am still grateful and happy for what I have now . @@konigstiger3252 "Only unending struggle leads to objective success". But if the struggle is unending, then objective success cannot end struggle. Thus, objective success is either unobtainable, or it is, in fact, arguably not worth having, as it cannot end your struggles anyway. Or, put another way, "objective success" is unobtainable, if you define "objective success" as the end of your struggles. Because reaching objective success does not, in fact, end your struggles. E.g. if you think that being rich and famous will cure your problems then, in discovering it's not true, you'll continue to define "objective success" as an ever-distant goal that is, by its nature of constantly running away from you, eternally unobtainable. And, therefore, you're stuck forever chasing a thing that, by its nature, remains unobtainable - as you keep defining it as being the thing that you currently don't have. Thus, you say "settle for less" - but "less" is a comparative - settle for less than what exactly? An inherently unobtainable ideal that seemingly does nothing to end your struggles, even if it were possible to reach, which it isn't? Settling for less than an intrinsically unobtainable idea, by settling with reality as it is - and the unending struggles it will always present, regardless of what you do. Accepting that there is no "cure" to the Human Condition and, therefore, be grateful for what you do have, what you can obtain and focus on enjoying the journey, aware that there is no destination to your life. Save for, well, death. But, on your death bed, do you want to be pining in regret for having no time to complete the forever unachievable goals you set yourself, or just reminiscing over the good times, with the people you liked, at peace with it all? Because you never set yourself a "bucket list" of unachievable things and feel no sadness for it remaining forever incomplete. I guess what I'm saying here is "define success".
@konigstiger32523 жыл бұрын
@@klaxoncow success is a journey. you struggle over a hill only to see another ahead. You have successfully climb 1 hill, so it is on to the next and the next. Hi, just wanted to share my story, bc maybe it helps me. Last year my mother got infected with covid, she didn’t have and previous diseases, she was sporty, healthy and not old. I was 18 by that time and within 1 week she got intubated, put into artificial coma, and stayed like this for 2 months. I was given the autority for her, I was grateful for that, my parents are divorced and nobody knows my mother like I do. The doctors told me horrible things, that she wouldn‘t make it and that they don’t know what to do anymore. It was hard to watch my strong mother like this, but during this time no matter what the doctors said, I stayed positive, it was no option in my head that my mum wouldn‘t wake up and become healthy again. So somehow the doctors managed to save her life, after 4 months she was extubated and awake. She was allowed to come home. We were more than grateful. But 1 week later she got an sepsis And needed to go to the hospital again. She stayed there another months and needed surgery. But than she came home and was able to do everything normally again. It was and is like a miracle. But then a thought popped to my mind, she was healthy and strong and still covid almost killed her what if she gets infected again, so I stopped meeting my friends and my boyfriend, it was all my desicion, my mother told me to do everything normally but I‘m just too afraid to loose her. I would live in another apartment for 2 weeks to meet friends and then do 10 days or More of quarantine and several pcr tests to make sure I don’t have covid and than go back to my mum. But it‘s not the same, because I‘m not free in my desicions, there‘s always the thought of loosing her, but it‘s also tearing me apart to live like this. This year I‘m moving to another country for studying, so I will be able to do whatever I like, but I won‘t have my mother by my side. I‘m stuck in a dilemma on one side I‘m very grateful on the other side I keep asking myself why this happend to us. And I‘m sad that I missed out on so many things with friends, especially now where I know how precious time is and how wisely you should use it. Please be kind, it‘s a very personal story for me. Thank you

That's inspiring! About point 10: it's totally okay to not give it your best shot and to lead an average life! Just enjoy life and be kind to your fellows. The pressure to live an optimal life can be counter-productive, and I personally think it's unethical to promote that kind of self-optimization (for instance, the pressure generated by people on instagram showing their perfect lifes, while actually being caught up in maintaining that illusion and worrying about the impressions we make on other people, or not being able to enjoy the moment because we're busy operating the camera). But, yeah, that's probably not what you meant by "give this all my best shot". What I want to say is more like: be kind to yourself and cut yourself some slack from time to time. Life is hard enough already.

Ultimately, there's a chance you'll be less happy than the person you call stupid. Don't judge people. Live your life, and try to relax. Turn on your aggressive and analytical mind only when it is necessary, or you will burn out. And if you ever meet someone who you feel a connection with, a friend or more, don't let them go. It'll be much harder for you to replace them. People are different, most are already set on a path they will walk to their grave. Don't try to change strangers, don't judge them either. Waste your breath and time, on the people that matter." God, I'm only starting to understand...

I did this by mistake in my teenage years. When i first started driving I found myself getting upset at all the red lights i would hit. I found this to be selfish though and told myself i wasnt allowed to be upset by the red lights unless I appreciate the green lights. So i started trying to take notice of all the green lights and i started to realize how often it usually goes my way. Then amazingly, i found myself appreciating some of the red lights too. Sometimes they gave me time to think if I wasn't sure where I was going, or sometimes they got me to avoid some less than desireable events, or even just gave me more time to myself if I needed time alone. This later projected onto many other things where I would appreciate the weather, the beautiful skies some days, The wind or rain i enjoy so much. Thankful when i narrowly avoid gettign stuck talking to someone i didn't want to talk to, thankful when i'm not the short straw in a draw, thankful for how good a soda taste at the end of a long work day. When you get use to being thankful you get some of the greatest enjoyment from the smallest of things and they stack up al through the day. I'm really glad you guys made a video putting it into words so easy to understand. Usually when i try to explain these feelings to someone they get confused and think i'm crazy. But it really does help

it's hard to be grateful, nowadays i basically hates eveyrthing and everyone except for dogs and cats. but this video came right on spot for me, I've been following you guys for years and I've skipped this video so many times and now I decided to watch it. It hurts to think about it the loneliness, rejections, and the thick armor that I've put myself into so no one could hurt me, mainly because no one can insult me more than I've did to myself looking at the mirror, or reject me more than I've done to myself over the years. in a sense I've hurted myself more than anyone could do so I've became emotionless about pretty much anything.. and that sucks, I've tried gratitude before, never worked right.... but I will try again, maybe opening up here like this is a start.

After a loooong bout of depression in my early teenage years, crying almost every night, losing apatite, losing touch with good friends, multiple "game over" attempts and generally hating myself, now, just sitting in my room, in my chair, or sitting on the couch outside, I feel so happy and so relaxed. I don't know what turned me around from my depression, what helped me, but I found my way out of that black hole by blindly walking around. And you know what? You're absolutely right. I am so darn grateful for everything that is around me. From the way my hair always swooshes a bit to a nice cup of tea in the afternoon, even the tiniest thing makes me chuckle and smile.
You would be surprised how strong the human mind is. For example, the placebo effect has cured people of chronic illnesses; even cancer. All the clinician did was make the patient believe they were getting the beast treatment.

I always got suspicious when people said "You need to like yourself or have a high self esteem to be happier". It seemed like an invitation to narcissism when it's worded like that. I like this explanation a lot more. Find things to be grateful for. It doesn't need to all come from oneself, nor all from outside.
@HA-it3hf4 жыл бұрын
Same here I used to equate self esteem/confidence with ego and arrogance. The thing is there are different types of self esteem/confidence. i.e. you could be confident in doing wrong (stealing, cheating, etc), or you could be confident in doing good for other humans and yourself. The more confident you are the more good you can do (selfless good)
@nevla.4 жыл бұрын
Agreed. As a person with depression, I always found that "solution" very infuriating. I'm being told that I need to like myself to be happier but I don't like myself because I'm not happy and I'm not happy because I don't like myself. A while ago I learned that self-esteem and liking yourself both have multiple meanings. They don't mean happiness, they mean acceptance.
@MrDarren6904 жыл бұрын
@@nevla. Of course. Positivity is like sugar, then--it's fun and sweet and nice but too much of it overloads and poisons you. You have to focus on being able to digest these emotions (acceptance) before trying to find more.
@differentbutsimilar78933 жыл бұрын
They'd have been getting ahead of themselves on that I think. Self-love, for me, is mostly about acceptance. You know you're not perfect, you know that you'll forever be a WIP, but you're grateful for who you are, the things that you have as a person, and the future opportunities to acquire more. Ideally it's the OPPOSITE of narcissism and has a strong connection to the desire to learn and grow. For instance, someone with high self love, when met with a difficult challenge or setback will see in that a chance to gain more of those things and ultimately be grateful for it, in spite of if it is difficult or even very painful - they know it's benefiting them and others. We're people, so the reaction can take a minute, but it comes around and you will see a certain serenity in the reaction. Someone who's lacking in it will see in that challenge proof of things they don't deserve and thus won't get the cookie, further reinforcing the feeling that everyone grows but them. Narcissism is really the opposite of self-love. Narcs create and enforce projections of confidence and self-affirmation as kite shields from the fact that deep down inside they don't have a strong sense of identity or worth - they tend to be extremely vulnerable inside and sometimes even react with rage when that is drawn out. It's all a very normal human defense mechanism, we all use the same ones and it is actually fine to have some of those traits - but it's about the balance. It's just that, the defenses they use are among the first you get as a child. An adult who still uses them as mains has missed some developmental steps. Childhood trauma is common, repeated events teaching them that lying and hiding things is the only way to get by. And then as adults it becomes all they know. Quite sad really. People think they don't have a conscious, but they actually suffer quite a lot. It's a lonely place, where one is never satisfied.
