The reason why they take pre-orders without asking for any down-payment is that they want to be able to get some sucker to invest in them, and then it's good to be able to say "We have so and so many pre-orders". But not even when they made pre-ordering free, those started rolling in. It's dead, Jim!

I believe it all started going to hell when they couldn't secure any VC investors with the closed-doors E3 event in 2019. Taking pre-orders was the less appealing route for attracting investors, and went against Tallarico once saying they won't take customers' money before launching any consoles.

The Founders, VIP and any pre-orders through Intellivision's site up until February (as I recall) all required $100 down. As Founders would request refunds, they would fill those slots with new orders who asked to be put on the Founders list.
