I never realized how much I wanted a table inside until you mentioned it.
@jasonp.1195

Agreed, and it looks like it'd be so easy to add one into the design. Just rework that triangular panel area of the floor (surrounded by hazard stripes) into a lifting table with bench seating folding out from underneath. This way you preserve the current open area while adding in the utility of a table. Regarding the missing toilet, a portable box toilet would totally work (attach it to a cargo grid spot in the cargo hold and your're good). A more complete answer might be to put the toilet in the same area as the turret access tube and have the turret seat deploy up into turret ball and then have the toilet (shower too?) move into position with the turret seat out of the way. Result is at least a good workable toilet for a ship which, after all, does have bunk beds. The downside being a more complex set of animations and some fresh modeling and use cases for the turret tube. Also, I'd hope an interlock would be included to prevent the activation of the turret from squishing somebody using the toilet/shower.

Yes, you beat me to it. I like the idea of the retracting table and turret seat. That alone would make the Cutlass would give that "dead space" more function. The Cutlass is not a big ship, but there is a dead zone that make you feel like you're missing something.

@KuraIthys
@KuraIthys 5 жыл бұрын
I've tried to do this with the 600i, but I'm struggling a bit with getting an accurate scale reference. Plus the 600i effectively has 4 decks in a rather weird arrangement that makes it hard to be sure from seeing it inside alone how everything is physically related. To some extent this wouldn't matter, even if the scaling is off a bit, but one of my main 'fixes' requires having a good idea of where the aft area is in relation to the crew quarters on the lower decks. Whether my idea is viable is highly dependent on where these two areas are in relation to one another, and that's actually pretty difficult to work out.

@Baleur
@Baleur 5 жыл бұрын
With all due respect, enough time wasted on reworks. It's time to finish the EXISTING concepts they still havent made, such as the Merchantman, Carrack, Hull series, Defender, San'Tok'Yal, Idris variants, Kraken, Endeavor, Pioneer base builder.... I mean isn't it enough?! xD Finish ships first, THEN do rework of old ships. Be happy you can at least fly the Cutlass.
@invalidData
@invalidData 5 жыл бұрын
@@Baleur They had to do all the rework because of the technologie update. All the old ships weren't usable with all the new systems, so you would lhave lost them... They are working on the cutlass red and blue right now, so it would fit to make that change as well. Else I would say, wait for later. There will always be some reworks along with new ships. You just got the huge 890 jump so don't be impatient. I think everybody wants a finnished game with all the ships and all the planets and all the stuff to do, but this takes time...
@waynebadewannentoaster6957
@waynebadewannentoaster6957 5 жыл бұрын
@@Baleur well I cannot see that I said something about "do a rework now and forget all the other ships" ;-) But there will be a time for a rework and then they should keep his concept in mind. I am absolutly with you, that all the concepts should finally come to life and also the needed game mechanics. But there has to be reworks done. Some ships are buggy af because they are so old. The Starfarer for example. It is buggy and together with the Caterpillar they are hard to use. You clip through the walls when flying in QT, texture fails etc. Plus the Game mechanic for fuel salvaging and filling up other ships is missing. I want new ships...but I also want to fly the still existing ships with joy.

Funny how people are drawn to certain things. Probably can't really explain why, can you? XD Me? I have a thing for Origin ships. Even though there's usually a more practical solution to any given problem... But to each their own I guess. Now I just have to remember that wearing a cocktail dress while piloting a starship is probably inappropriate, no matter what kind of ship it is. XD

Well, to be fair I could see it being perfectly fine in a 600i in future. Right now it fails because we still have oxygen inconsistencies. I can walk from the front to the back of the ship and I'll go from pockets with oxygen to areas without and back again. XD It reminds me though, ships like the 600i and the like where you might run into oxygen problems but probably won't be 'spaced' that easily make me think the game could do with an 'emergency' helmet. You know. Like those plastic things that some of the NPC's on lorville wear? Something that's relatively subtle, like a necklace or whatever which will activate in an emergency and give you a helmet with say 5 minutes of oxygen. You'll probably be in trouble due to exposure in many situations, but it'd be just enough if your large ship loses oxygen to get to storage and put on a proper flight suit. Assuming it'd be possible with the technology ingame this seems like the kind of item that most people would be glad to have around. Sort of a half-step between being in a flight suit the entire time you're in space, and just going around in regular clothes, damn the consequences. XD

Hey, Morphologis! Khemsa from ARMCO here. Lovely video, very well put together. A pity that I missed the live gameplay on Twitch! I'll try to be there next Saturday! The Cutlass Black being the most played ship in the game right now (as per last Friday's Star Citizen Live feature comments from the vehicles pipeline director), I think that they will take the chance to work on the Cutlass Red (3.8) and Cutlass Blue (3.9) to iterate on the cabin because of: 1. The Player Status System v1 feature coming in 3.9, which will require players to use toilets and kitchens. 2. The physicalized components on the ship (not on the roadmap right now because of the pending work on the physics grid, but they are working on it), which will force them to add placeholders and animations for the components. As an example, the reworked Vanguard (3.6) already has them in place and animated (but not working yet) whereas the Cutlass Black does not. Cheers! Keep up the good work!

I've always felt that the cutlass black had the most room for customization, the option to cover up internals and externals for a price, extra safety features for a price, better quality for a price. Also, I really like your Whitebox for the interior, with the door position moved to the center it also nicely lines up with the orange lines that are visible on the floor of the cargo room, adding some nice symmetry to the design.

I've had SC for years and I've loved the Cutlass for equally as long. I was so much in love with the old Cutlass' rugged-effectiveness that, when they updated the entire ship, I wasn't too pleased. Sure, I was happy to have an even more efficient aircraft, but I think it lost a lot of its old finesse and style. So I consider myself a big fan of the Cutlass and let me tell you right now, your 3D concept is simple perfection. It's the upgrade I think many old time Cutlass fans would have preferred over the extremely barren feeling current model. Yes, the Cutlass is not supposed to be long-term residence, but neither were the schooner fishing vessels used for pirating in the 1700s, which is what the old Cutlass Black design felt like - a sort of "make do and mend" personality. The original Cutlass Black was stereotypical 2100s pirate ship of the stars, but the rework made it too simplistic and lifeless, like an industrial workhorse. Your small rework concept revitalises that old Cutlass Black feeling.

Great visuals on your redesign. Only problem is that where you put the bulk head door it would reduce 16 SCUs of cargo space because the cargo butts up to the bulkhead. I would put the bathroom where the turret is and move the turret forward to the middle of the cabin space. Moving the turret forward should also give a greater downward angle to the arc of fire. Your redesign would have to lose the table but that loss of comfort contributes more to the spartanesque feeling. I've got an AA in arcetecture and about 6 years of experience in commercial construction as a framer and superintendent so I think a lot about redesign as well. Love your stuff Morph.

Around 7:30 I liked what you talked about with the turrent and stuff. A idea came to my mind because I recently saw a video on the 890 jump and one of the turrents slides ups and then moves forwards the up again to the gun area. Basically the idea that popped in my mind is instead of the chair going up and down it does a small zig zag in front of that door area and that's how you get into the turrent. They could add a button that brings the turrent chair down for how to get in.

I love your 3d model design, but I think that it would be awesome if the space below turret would also act as an (3-way) airlock: - there would be a door in front and behind the guner's seat downward possition that would serve as an airlock between crew cabin and cargo bay, that would allow you to have open cargo bay doors with pressure in crew cabin - Moving Turret seat into upper position would close a door after it (turret can be significantly damaged or even shot off completely and this would prevent loss of pressure in crew cabin - this would go with the theme that Drake expects their ships to be used in harsh conditions and that anything can brake) - If the turret's air tightness is compromised, the gunner will exit his seat into unpressurized cargo bay, instead of the crew cabin and if he desires to go into crew cabin, he can go througn the air lock once the guner's seat retracts and the door shuts after it. - The ultimate added functionality would be if at its bottom would be an elevator, with floor-door shutting after it when it goes down like on Constellation (so a 4-way airlock, but you wouldn't use this one in combat and you wouldn't use turret when landed)

As cool as the moving seats are, they just dont make sense. I would rather have the seats on a mezzanine with a space below for maybe another seat. that seat could be used for any number of things, like remote turret control, coms, shields, etc. Alternatively it could be used as space for an extra bed or maybe even put the kitchenette there leaving for more room for a bathroom.

Good points about the bathroom. Though I think not including a bathroom was a deliberate choice. The Cutlass Black is not supposed to be long range and removing the bathroom from the original concept during the rework reinforces a more short range role. I think CIG want the Corsair as the more long range small crew option and the Kraken for transporting a Cutlass Black long range. A fold away table is a nice touch though. Maybe something that can be added in game at a later date? Maybe suggest this to CIG? Keep up the great work mate!

10:30 another thing I would add to the turret section is a second hatch to create a space that can function as an airlock since the cargo bay will often be depressurized. Once pressurized compartments are a thing in SC the Cutlass, as it stands right now, won't be something I'd like to spend more than a few minutes of flight time in. The Freelancer has pretty much the same issue with its forward access hatch. Both ships will eventually need a little touch-up. Then again - explosive decompression is certainly one way to get your bunk mate to stop snoring in a hurry!

I really like the Cutlass. Traded mine in for a superhornet almost to the day, one year ago. But it's a great ship. With those 2 side doors and back ramp, you have a great dropship. The side panels on the wings give your troops some quick cover. Roof turret to help give your guys 2 size 3 support fire. Ample space for vehicles and cargo. If I could only have 1 ship, and my spending cap were less than $150. It would have to be the Cutlass. That said, I'm very excited to try the cutlass blue.

My own first thought on seeing that space was also 'Needs a table' but, thinking about it, tables in SC are just set dressing as they add no real in-game functionality. What is needed, or soon will be needed, is a kitchen as they will be forcing us to eat & drink at intervals. Rather than fill the centre of the space with a table I would find space on a wall for a very basic kitchen, maybe little more than a sink and microwave and cupboard, and a table off to one side with just enough space for two crew to sit and eat, perhaps play cards. Also a minimalist toilet. This is not a ship you use for long journeys away from civilisation but it may be a ship you need to stay in all day and/or overnight. The gun rack and maybe a suit locker are essentials. I love this ship. I don't have the real-world funds to own one but it is first on my shopping list when I can start saving UECs. Yes if money was no object it would be cool to own something big as well but one or two people filling multiple roles as well as being able to carry Orgmates into battle is my kind of playstyle. After that, the Kraken :-)

I only watch Morph vids with my food and when I'm ready to chill. I only do that with million dollar productions. Between Star Citizen (stellar subject matter) and Morph's style (the cinematography, the music) that's the highest compliment I can give. I'm watching this over Netflix.

10:04 This should be offered as a design update. It's a great idea. I've thought about the lack of a kitchen and bathroom in this ship quite a lot already, and I've been a backer only since the 2950 IAE. It's just that it feels so counter intuitive for a ship that has a bunk bed and is described as a light freighter to then have an interior that's more akin to a drop-ship without side guns for suppressing fire. It's like there are a lot of options going on but it's not committing to any of them to a degree that would sell them.

In addition to the model, which looked great for what was just a visual aid, I liked the over-the-shoulder touring. I guess you've done it before, but it seemed especially effective in this one. Moving the turret up like the Vanguard's seems like a great solution, but I'd move the door to the hold (edit: as you did - somehow I missed that while watching intently) but also the weapon racks into that area and use the freed wall space for the restroom and lockers, rather than lockers and kitchenette. The angled walls could stay personal storage on one side, but have a small bench and table (as found in the Caterpillar command module) and kitchenette/food storage on the other. But the Cutlass seems like a ship that would rely on rations and meal replacements, so I'd be okay if the food prep and experience came second to storage or whatever else was practical. And a downside with the above layout is it would maybe need a change in the cargo grid to make sure someone could reach the exits, but that could maybe be a good thing if the grid was changed to open pathways to all three.

The Cutlass is a great ship, but when in hover mode it looks like it's about to tip over, due to the rear placement of those big thrusters and nothing at the front. It was fun to join the stream, btw!

Great content! A great ship, the designer really nailed the Drake design language. Sooo much detail. I like your idea for the forward compartment. It wouldn't surprise me if the end up implementing something like this in the future.

Like the fitting in of a shoilet and storage, I would really like the triangular section of the floor to have a hatch that opens for a way to enter the ship other than the backdoor.

I do like the pop up table but I also like the turret seat on the ground. It reflects the "ready to get the job done as soon as it needs doing" that the rest of the ship is made for. (though I love moving seats in ships lol).

Man, that footage is so smooth. When I play I get about 2 minutes of 0-15 fps and then a crash. I don't even have a bad computer, it's a 1500$ gaming desktop that's about a year old.

I always thought the floor section where you put the table looked as though it was designed to open. No idea what would be in there though. The ship overall is great, but a couple minor tweaks would be nice. Your design definitely feels more comfortable; I'd like to have that personal space away from the duties of the cargo bay and cockpit, and for that reason there should definitely be a door between the cockpit and living space. Great review!

Love the interior mockup - quite a fan of the idea that the Cutlass should get some very basic amenities in line with other ships of its size. Nothing fancy, as is typical of Drake, but enough to keep someone going out in the fringes of space. I think the design you proposed fits that bill quite well, and would love to see something similar be adopted for a rework.

I am quite impressed by your depth of knowledge. Most of us that would not have taken any notice of some of the key elements of spaceship design have certainly learned a great deal. Your work must have an effect on the designers. Elite dangerous it seems, will soon deploy space legs. I do hope that you will cast your critical eye on Elite dangerous ships when that happens. It will be interesting to see Frontier’s designers react.

10:25 if you put a flat solid vertical sheet of steel on the end of the table that faces the cockpit, a guard could crouch down behind the table as hard cover with his machine gun permanently bipod-aimed at the rear door, an extremely effective defence against intruders.

This video really puts into words everything I feel about the Cutlass, especially in terms of the living space. Every time I walked in there I could tell something about it just wasn't sitting right but I never knew why. Now I do. The cutlass is a uniquely beautiful ship and I think the small changes to the design of the living section would be the last piece needed to make it perfect.

I like your suggestion about how to fix the Cutlass interior making the turret the doorway and have the seat drop down. I also think it needs at least one more bed (unless that turret becomes a remote/automated turret) I hope with the new cave climbing mechanic we can grab/climb into the side doors too.
