Love the work man. Definitely takes a ton of time. But its paid off. Cant wait to see what you and the team pull off next. My only question is was there a reason to not close the gap between the wings and fuselage in flight mode like in the concept? I think that would really streamline the design and make the lines look a lot cleaner. Not sure if there were animation or technical reasons for this. Sort of like the issues with the Hull Series cargo dilemma.
@Khunez5 жыл бұрын
Its actually an alien built ship that is then marketed and fitted for a human. Meaning the anything on the list that would not be to human spec (doors, beds, weapon rack, seats, controls) is gutted and retrofitted for human use. The Banu also like to mix tech from any species. If another species has better thrusters they will use them (like the Xian in this case) however they will go another step forward and perfect the tech.

I also love how the Banu Defender breaks down. If you lose an arm it begins to leak green nasty QT fuel and pipes inside the ship begin to leak and ship fills up with smoke! The one small detail I feel the Banu Defender should have made better is its design on the MFD. It’s a big design disconnect from the exterior and or interior of the ship. I feel like the MFD should somewhat represent the ships design in someway because that is what Im looking at most of the time. Maybe I’m nitpicking Cannot wait for the Banu Merchant Man!
@杨简-v5z5 жыл бұрын
EREBUS all alien ship MFDs are modified and converted to human language/text display, and that was made clear/lore-friendly a long time ago when supposedly “captured” vanduul Scythe introduced; in order to be able to fly this ship and test out the functionalities they swap out the MFDs and computer with human ones. The glitch on the HUD you see when you power up your alien ship is the computer translating alien texts to human text/English.
@KuraIthys5 жыл бұрын
I would say the HUD stuff is still very much a work in progress, and I expect various ship HUD's to get more distinct as they actually implement the new UI stuff properly. I honestly wouldn't expect an Origin, MISC and Consolidated Outland ship to all have essentially the same HUD, but currently they do. In the real world, sure, there's standard features in vehicles - all cars have a speedometer, most have an RPM counter, and there's standardised things like a steering wheel, pedals, turn signals... But in the end each vehicle has slightly different indicators, control placement and so on. Same with aircraft. So the degree of standardisation in the SC universe right now is well beyond what you'd expect to see...
@Omaricon5 жыл бұрын
It's clearly placeholder currently. The devs have specifically said they don't want a bunch of different HUD's because when testing and seeing what is needed and what isn't it's much easier to itterate on one rather than a dozen (or more). So once they get the functionality of what HUD's require they'll start to diversify them for each manufacturer, and by that extent, for aliens.
@erebus72055 жыл бұрын
杨简 The screens on the MFD is not what’s bothering me but the design language around the MFD (screen frame?). Captured or not, the design of the MFD frame feels very very simple compared to the organic and complicated aesthetic that runs through the entire ship. BTW I thought only AOPOA or Esperia ships were captured and converted ships? Isnt the Banu ship a literally untouched ship?
@杨简-v5z5 жыл бұрын

Some notes on Banu lore: 1) The aliens supposedly have technological parity with humanity, but there are areas in which each species has an advantage (like X'ian thrusters), so the Banu aren't really more advanced than the UEE and biological engineering hasn't been mentioned as a specific stong point. 2) The Banu are extreme specialists, so the second cockpit is for the gunner as a Banu pilot will only concentrate on flying while leaving all gun control to the gunner. For the human export model, guns are controllable by the pilot, however.

iirc in the lore of the bannu, if there's a job of pilot, and a job of weapon's officer, those would be their discreet, "ordained" and strictly enforced specific jobs for the two individuals. You would crew a ship with individuals ordained to perform those specific functions who cannot/are not allowed to do anything else by cultural norms. That kind of deal. Caste system like. Been a long time since I've looked into that though lol.
@matthewgumabon74982 жыл бұрын
I feel like even these exotic alien ships still look like something invented by a human. Our spaceships seem to be heavily inspired by the ships we used to sail the seas and soar through the skies. Our Earlthy craft had to fight gravity, rely on buoyancy, and manage friction from atmosphere and water. That design language subconsciously seems to have carried over to human spaceship design. But depending on their anatomy, I think alien ships would be even more weird looking than this ship. Think about it, we humans only have the concept of “front” and “back” because we only have eyes on one side of our body. So our vehicles are elongated and have a front and back. I imagine a creature that has 360 deg vision from having eyes all around its head. I think its spaceships would be spherical, and it would be able to move, observe and attack in any direction without having to turn. A human would literally not be able to pilot the ship because a human does not have the same kind of vision as this creature.
@eckee5 жыл бұрын
I don’t like those two arms obstructing your view tbh. It looks like a fighter more when folded down. You need everything as close as possible to the center of gravity if you want an agile ship. And with hitscan weapons, you’d want them to have the greatest convergence possible for sniping. Making things look good is not wrong, but you have to make them practical if it’s life or death, like in a combat spaceship. With two pilots and guns placed that far apart, it’s not the best possible tool for module sniping. It’s a shame, this could’ve been a unique role in combat.

There's also some really weird outlying data where certain specific GPU's or CPU's perform a lot better or worse than the norm for something in that performance class. It gets even weirder when you include the data considered to be 'outliers' Such as the extremely bad performance of combining a GeForce RTX 2080 Ti with a Threadripper 2990WX Getting just 31 fps where pretty much anything else with a 2080 TI is getting 65+ FPS...

I don't really think the Banu grow their ship, or that there is something actually organic with this, but i'd rather believe it to be a fact that they prefer smoother more organic lines vs the human preference for more metallic and hard surfaces. The overal look resembling a crab does give a curious theory as well from my end: what if, where human jets have been modeled roughly after predatory birds, what if Banu jets, throughout history, were modeled after aquatic life, and the Defender is just an evolution of that basic design. We will never really know for sure, though, given that the Banu themselves neither know, nor care. But it does create a lot of curiosity for how the BMM will look.

For alien ships adapted to human use, there should be some obvious retrofitting placed into the design. I know that would spoil the design in a purist sense. But it would lend credibility to the design. A ship repurposed for human use would need adaptations, probably made by humans and not the original designers. There can always be cases where ship variants were made for humans by the original alien manufacturers in the interest of export. But they should feel that way as well. "Where will we put the excretion room and why do they insist on privacy?"

Interesting perspective on the idea that they are 'grown'. In the absence of them stating that in lore (though we might find out soon...) the interpretation I am leaning towards it that the Banu invented generative design much earlier than we have, and didn't become so interested and invested in simple geometry and trigonometry as we did. If that were the case, they might not actually be grown, but rather just designed following similar rules to growth.

If there is a single thing I can think of, it is this-at a certain point, the laws of physics don't care about how you want things to look. Things are going to look the way the laws of physics allow. It's why the MIG-25 and the F-15 have roughly the same general body form and design. It's why the B-1B and the TU-22M look roughly the same. Yes, there are details that mark them out as different, and there are things that make it easy to tell them apart from each other. But...they have a major commonality of design and shape. Because to do what they have to do, you have to have about the same shape and form for the mission they were built for. Doesn't mean that there can't be a lot of visual design differences. I can think of the visual "language" of four different star-fairing factions easily and explain it to people...and still stay within the same general "laws of physics" concept.

I have not yet played Star Citizen, but have been casually watching its development from the shadows because there is so much potential in this "game". The ships have kinda been a real hit-or-miss prospect for me. I either dig them or I don't, no middle ground. However, I have to admit that this design is the first one that really connected for me. This thing is sexy as hell. I love the "Art Deconess" of it all, and thoughtful, successful organic design has always been a real favorite of mine.

You will like Farscape's living ships, Moya and Talyn. Star Citizen could maybe get an inspiration from that too.

At the 4:01 mark when your talking about growing is actually crazy to think about. I’ve done some hardcore research on ufos an alien technology and that’s apparently how the ships work. Apparently they are organic and grow themselves. It sounds crazy but makes perfect sense if a civilization was 1-2 million years ahead of us in technology.

in flight it reminds me of a pod racer from Star Wars Episode One

I love my space crab. But I hate the stock loadout. Had to change the QT, Shield, and weapons. But kow it's a most excellent ship for both box delivery and combat.

I love that this ship exists. I love the detailing. But I don't like the shape of it. Still, that's fine. There's nothing wrong with it, it's just a matter of personal taste. And not everybody likes everything. (case in point, all the Drake ships that are so popular, which I don't like much at all.)

Idk if you read the brochure but the defender was specific made for humans, since there is no copy rights etc in the banu worlds so anyone can remake the ships in their own eyes so they did for human purpose

Organic. Like the Boats from Princess Kahm's race (Batia and Geobaldi... Reference anyone?)

Good video Morph! Just wondering but have they fixed the shields on the defender? I heard that they dont regenerate like other ship shields and its pretty disadvantagous during combat... Also the tachyons are actually quite strong, but thats only against other fighters since having hitscan against faster targets is greatly advantagous. It pops light fighters in like 3-5 shots assuming u hit them well. Reminds me of the old 'high-alpha' weapon meta of omnisky canons lol

The interiors remind me of the Kryptonian ships from MOS. The combination of dull greys with golds, the lack of straight lines in the design. The ribbing and coarse texture on the walls and panels. Even the way the doors open and close.

Well its out there B D. I was impressed to invest in three. My view is my own Ai crew supporting my two Banu MM. NB . We are out in the bigger space as such , not micro fiddling on earth . Embracing (sorry) the bigger picture. I compliment other alien designs and my hearts and minds approach I think will outweigh the bish bash bosh sort of approach of friends here on earth. Anyway the B M is yet to appear.

In the event, no one wants to look it up or already knows. Tachyons are theoretical particles that move faster than light or arrive before light. So before a photon/light reaches anywhere a tachyon has already arrived. If I'm not mistaken tachyons reach light speed by losing energy rather than gaining. So as they 'die' they slow to lightspeed. To have a weapon working on that principle is ridiculously overpowered if it were 100% accurate. Still a weapon like that has already exceeded laser weapons from old sci-fi. I imagine with more entries from this race at least downgraded ones would start introducing laser weapons and the like. Pretty cool honestly

I utterly, utterly despise Organic design, it's a real turn off for me. That said, you can just see the effort and detail put into it, and I can detach how I feel about them personally to recognise how well they've pulled this off. That's a fairly hefty acheivement in my book. The future's looking pretty bright.

About the tachyon cannons, I'm not sure what to tell you. I find them extremely powerful in Pirate Swarm at least. I'm able to solo it without dying once, although sometimes the hits don't register and it gets really annoying. Damage wise, they're crazy powerful, and this is supposed to be a light fighter.

After having trifecta of ideas I'd been mulling over while designing a gas turbine exhaust housing, I caught a presentation on Biomimicry, which naturally sprang to mind upon watching your video. Disregarding the lore around this ship and speaking from purely a design principle, I love that people have begun to embrace the natural world as cues for human devices.

I don't like the gold on its sides. It's way too regal for Banu, and for a spaceship. Sure, it can't be gold - for a number of reasons, but I prefer ships to look more utilitarian. Also, I hate the fact that they installed landing gear and weapons into destructible side pylons (or "wings") - once you lose them, you won't be able to land normally.
@Frodo_Shaggins3 жыл бұрын
The exterior is interesting. I don't exactly like the proportions or how those.. uh.. wings? connect to the main hull. However the organic look that you brought up is what makes me like it. Particularly the interior reminds me of the ship from Farscape which I believe is the same "living ship" idea. If I ever play this game I may not use this ship but I do think it is very interesting.

How can you hate such a creation? I don't want to sound like a crazy fanboy, but to me, every ship in Star Citizen universe is a masterpiece on it's own. I have played a lot of space games and non of them went into such details when designing ships. Whenever I enter some new ship, it always has WOW effect on me. Just hope they could speed up the gamemakeing process. I can understand that this amount of details needs time. I'm just too eager to start playing full game...

This is another one of those "What is the purpose of..." "things". The arms, what is the purpose? The cabin is awesome, I think it should be slightly bigger for nitpicky things that need more space, but beautiful and functional, especially if it is made from a once living thing. If the arms were a naturally connected part of the creature then I could understand but they don't appear to have any purpose for the transformation other than to look cool. But that's just an opinion.

This ship, is absolutely hot, a true beauty. I'm usually fan of some different style of ships...but this one really just feels sweet. It looks when it's not in flight mode, a tiny teeny bit like a Cylon's raider, the early ones, like the prototypes and stuff. Albeit realistically speaking i'm not sure i'd be able to get into and sleep into that ship....it feels...a bit scary...you know, being inside something that look so organic...it remind me Alien Isolation... *shudders at the thought * At least for the aliens ships out there in SC i prefer it over that red one wich certainly look cool...but meh

If most of the pieces aren’t modular, I assume the BMM will take a huge amount of effort, and being delayed over and over. It’ll look gorgeous, but it’ll take so long...

It reminds me a lot of Ancient Egypt actually; a lot of beetle-like elements with gold and leaf patterns and open communal spaces. It doesn't really strike me as extra-terrestrial, we could build a car like this. It wouldn't be very popular for everyday use because it's too ornate and expensive to make, but we could.
