Here in the Chicago North Shore near Lake Michigan we also lost all our Ash trees Beau. They say that it came from pallets coming in to the freight part of the Airport from China during goods importation. Years ago we had a horrible problem with the Dutch Elm and lost all the Elms. Hey Chigg, we also have a problem in Australia with a beetle infecting and killing off our Ash Trees. It's not so bad when the trees are scattered around, but when they were formally planted to line major roads up to 100 years ago, the die off looks really bad. I hope your Winkie fully recovers soon and becomes happy again to Mrs Chiggs satisfaction 😉, you should go out for a nice dinner to celebrate and make it a special evening.

You taught me a few good things today. Thanks. Hearing you talk about the grape vines reminded me of a childhood experience up here in Upstate NY. I didn't know what the vines were which grew up among the trees across the creek and on another person's property. These vines were thick, as you pointed out, and had fun swinging on them. Funny how we do things without realizing the potential danger related to it. We had poison sumac on the property of my childhood, as well as poison ivy among a few other things, that can make life a wee bit stressful. Fortunately, I never suffered from your situation, nor did I know about how ivy could be spread via its burning or the "juice" from the vine itself. Praying your rash heals up completely with no scar tissue.

Reminds me of one time I was berry picking with a friend had a nice patch friend came over starting picking with me pulling the vines off just like I was then he said “ damn is this poison ivy “ I said yes... (not sure why but I have no reaction to it at all). He said we must quit now went to his house he took every thing off put it in laundry couple days later his wife threw something at me don’t remember exactly what but she was pissed I guess you can get a rash from just doing laundry. Glad it does not affect me.

Gee, Beau... That brings to mind a couple of things: First, I guess that kind of curtails your earnings as a male stripper for a while. And Second, That reminds me of a somewhat similar situation that occurred during a bivouac some years ago. Middle of the night one of our troops answered a call to nature and he ventured out to the latrine area. He assumed the position for number two and proceeded. Open completion of said operation he quickly reached for the "paper" put there for that purpose. This was under "no light" conditions... no flashlight, no moon (no pun intended), totally covert. Well, he grabbed and vigorously rubbed before checking. I'm sure the skunk was just as surprised and offended as he was. Needless to say he met with "nature's bidet" and was unable to decontaminate for the rest of the patrol. Said individual was on permanent watch guard away from the main camp at night and took point during the day to give us a clear path through the opponents AO. Moral of the story is... reach for the rabbit next time! The skunk is pretty bad, and the squirrel will take your nuts! LOL

I was a cub scout den leader years ago and stayed in cub scouts even though my son had moved up into boy scouts, where I was assistant scoutmaster in his troop also. I had my Webelos out on a fall weekend campout. I had them and another boy scout, who went on the camp out to assist me, get firewood to start a fire. After they got it going, a boy came to me saying his hand itched (he helped gather wood) later, others were complaining of itching in various places. Fearing what had happened, I looked at the remainder of the wood. There were what looked to be small pieces of branch, but no, it was poison ivy vine. So all the ones that handled it had the oil on their skin, but worse, since it was burned, it was in the smoke so everyone around the fire was contaminated. Luckily it wasn't too cold, and we had a nearby hydrant for water, so I had everybody wash and bag their clothes ( being a leader, I'm prepared, and keep a box of small trash bags for situations such as this) and being a EMT, I carry a full jump kit with a LARGE tube of hydrocortisone cream. After everybody was treated, I had the scouts take us to where they gathered wood. Wearing nitrile gloves, I showed the boys what the vines look like, and how they attatach to a tree. The ones they found were cut and left on the ground by loggers, knowing not to leave them on. The boys had been taught about small poison ivy plants and the leaves of three, but had never seen the stalks get to 2-3 inches in diameter or grow to be trees themselves, lol. All kids seemed to be fine, no major reactions to the ivy. Parents were called and told what happened, and that they could pick up their children if they wanted. Heck of a way to impart a lesson, but I think they all know about poison ivy now.

What can be done with the poison ivy? It seems so invasive, is poison oak the same as the poison ivy (burning it)?
@act.13.416 жыл бұрын
Poison Ivy, poison oak and poison sumac are all bad news. They are similar but not the same. Cutting the vines will not kill the roots. They can spread through the roots. Around here, it is everywhere. You can hardly find a tree that doesn't have a vine on it. Dress for the task. Tape your pants cuffs to your socks, shirt sleeves to your gloves, etc. Do what you have to do and try to be finished in 30 minutes or less. When you get out of the clothes, they go straight into the washer and wash them a couple of times. Throw the gloves away. You get straight into the shower and only use cool water. Plenty of soap. Any tools used will also need to be washed with soap and water. If you don't wash the tools, they can still be poisonous up to about a year. Never burn the plant. Ever. Just cut them at the base of the trees and leave them there. They will die and rot away. Keep them cut so they don't send new vines up the trees. Keep the ground mowed well and eventually the roots will die off. The roots underground are just like vines and can cover a large area and are not really worth dealing with. Too much digging and if you try to just pull them up, you won't do much but hurt yourself.
@spottyskunk18986 жыл бұрын
Keep it cut way low, and never ever burn Poison oak, poison ivy, or poison sumac - all of them will become airborne contaminants. All 3 of them are major pains for brush management and landscaping, simply because they're such persistent buggers.

It's a shame about the ash tree disaster. Here in western Canada we had a similar problem with the mountain pine beetle. By about 2005, at it's peak, we lost about 58% of our pine trees in British Columbia and parts of Alberta. When you look at aerial pictures you see a sea of redness. Notably, after the tree dies, the wood inside turns light blue. And although I can't say I feel your pain about your other "disaster" I only know some of that pain as I was stung by a wasp in the same area while "doing my business."
