I'm sure some of the bigger guys could make it as forwards if they upped their stamina levels. The biggest barriers would be similar - learning a new game, but also skills like passing, rucking, scrummaging (in union). I actually think the fast guys would have even more trouble adapting, as a back you definitely need to be able to pass well, but also wingers have to know how to kick and position well. I think NFL players would have as much difficulty making a team as people like Wade and Holmes.

I find the process fascinating. It’s a massive gamble leaving their comfort zone of their respective disciplines. I think the AF’s would find the constant moving with rugby an issue, they are so conditioned to playing in a stop start fashion and with different tactics being afforded to specific players. Their heads would be melted with having to do everything in rugby more or less. I would love to see the attempted transition. Positional sense and instinct is more prevalent in rugby, the amount of set plays in AF takes the process out. I’m no AF expert so just going on what I see.

such an endless debate, i played both. Low level football and high level rugby. They are not really comparable because they are so very different. Football is high impact with the focus on stopping the carrier on the spot. Rugby is a constant grind with tackles and continuous play that are based on completing the tackle or getting the ball to the ground and maintaining possession, giving up a few yards in this process is of little consequence (other than at the try line). Football allows for a shoulder lead hit while Rugby requires an 'attempt to wrap' (your arms around the carrier for those that dont know), this lessens the high impact (although there are ways around it :-)) I would say that football is "harder on the body' in respect to potential injury, those pads and helmets can lead to injuries that Rugby players do not need to worry about, as well as, the reckless force behind the hit since play stops once the carrier is down. But a football player switching to Rugby is going to be in for a big surprise on the endurance required for the never ending (non injury inducing) beating their body will take in a full game where stoppages are really short when they happen , especially if they are in the pack ( sorry backs :-)

I've played rugby for more than 10 years, I love and watch football and I also tried it as well. Rugby is far more dynamic, the play doesn't stop when the carrier is tackled, most of the time you just have to keep on playing, tackling, running, passing and get well-positioned without being able to stop for also 20 minutes straight. Football is more about exlposiveness, you have to do less, but you have to be able to be super intense whenever you get the ball. It's not about size or strenght, just go ahead and tell me why Henry Tuilagi couldn't be a defensive tackle or Ben Tameifuna couldn't be a great linebacker, same works for someone like Derrick Henry, Antonio Brown, Gronkowski or so. They all got the physical power and speed to play, but the games are different. Rugby players have probably more stamina, but they aren't used to avoid tackles coming from every direction, especially high tackles, which are illegal in rugby, plus, they don't have the positioning. Same goes for NFL players: a lot of power, but less stamina, plus, remember, rugby players both play offense and defense. Would a great running back be able to perform a correct tackle on some crazy speed legs guy such as Shane Williams or Brian Habana? There's no such thing as an "easier sport" when you talk about playing it at high levels, especially if you never played it before, and if you have ever been an athlete, you know it.

Americans make it almost impossible for overseas athletes to make it in the NFL. The ' playbook ' being the primary problem. Rugby has plays but in second phase it is basically up to the intuition of the player. Gridiron has no second phase.

I knew a few people, myself included, who followed him either watching the games or catching the highlights. When he signed, too much fanfare, the 49'ers became the designated "Aussie" team. He had a strong pre-season and played in a handful of games for one year, coming back to Australia *arguably* a bigger star. Valentine Holmes is another story.

As someone who did both Football and Rugby in HS, I can say that football is more aggressive than rugby because of the types of tackles you're limited to. In rugby, you can't just tackle anybody, you can only do it on person with possession of ball and you can't body slam or suplex the dude. As for getting tackled in both sports, football players tend to have more tackle force than rugby players, the speed at which you are getting tackled may be slower than that of a rugby player but it's the hit that's stronger.

Rugby League used to be unlimited possession like Rugby Union. Reportedly after a trip to America, RFL officials trialled a 4-tackle rule during season 1967/68 in England, followed by Australia in season 1968. The number 4 was subsequently altered to 6. Hence, American Football had a direct influence on Rugby League as we now know it.

Rugby is very different compared to football. You dont see guys benchpressing 400lbs in rugby(especially league) or guys running 40 yard in 4.4 secs. That's very rare in rugby. In football you see that a lot. There have been several footballers who made it to league. One of them even scored a try. The only player to score a try and a touchdown

Hayne was Lazy Trainer. That was never go down well in NFL. Where everything is a competition, Natural Talent will only take you so far specially in the NFL. The amount of study and film you have to do is incredible compared to Rugby.

Athletes from both sports are incompatibly trained with the other. Rugby League is endurance based, requiring both defense and offense in a free flowing game. Football is short bursts of absolute intense power in rigidly structured plays.

These rugby league players are all giving up too early. Both Holmes and Payne looked promising but both gave up after a year or two of being on the practice squad. Did these guys think they were just going to stroll into a sport they had never played and be starting in their first year??

thats the thing, its not just learning the rules. Its that muscle memory and DNA you build up playign these sports your whole life. Like you start rugby at like 7-14yrs old. By the time the rugby players get to the pros theyve played rugby most of their lives(im assuming NFL players is no different with their mates and at school growing up). On Weekends, lunchtimes at school, after school. You build up this giant muscle memory and awareness for the game itself(and the positions you normally play naturally). To just transition from one to the other with NO backround in the sport from Rugby or from NFL, no muscle memory for the sport your transitioning too or mental awareness for the sport built up all the way form a child to adult. Is probably more than just difficult to transition to the other sport professionally and actually compete at the VERY HIGHEST level as your team mates, is probably nigh on impossible

But really though, I wanted to see the mindset of a star rugby player on display in the NFL to see if he brought any changes to the way people approached the game. Like how he would read blockers. But it didn't last long enough. I remember it was cool seeing him do cutbacks.

Jared Hayne. He's more about speed and step, other NRL players have more rounded skills that would better suit a transition to NFL.

Onlyrealmusic4life His rugby league mind set was possibly a problem for Hayne as a PR. The reason being in rugby league you must attempt to catch “punts” almost every single time (only if the ball is definitely going out of bounds of out the back of the “end zone” before the kicking side can reach it can you afford to not attempt the catch or gather) as the punting side can regather the ball whether the defending side fumbles it or not. Thus under pressure in the NFL his life long habits from rugby may have caused him to try to catch in risky situations where he could have just allowed the ball to do its thing uncontested. If he hadnt made those fumbles I think he would have made a real impact in the longer term. Hayne would have been stronger as a receiver like Holmes where he could get some open field runs going. Running back at a guess seems to require from my limited knowledge of NFL much more experience of defensive line set ups and tactics to be able to instinctively picks lines to run. Open field play where its just basically just man on man is bread and butter rugby league stuff.

@@Squashed8Ball I think they could have given him a few plays at RB. But yeah, all game might have been strenuous. He definitely had some skill returning punts. And he even was able to catch the ball at RB and create a long play where there wasn't one. I liked him. I was sad when he got cut.
