i've watched dozens of college decision videos, and this by far has been my favorite. i feel like throughout this process, it's really easy to get swept up in rejections and to tie one's self worth to the decision results. a lot of the videos on youtube lack the introspective element this one has, and i can't put into words how nice it is to see someone talk about the lessons the process taught them so openly. you seem like a genuinely thoughtful and kind-hearted person, and i hope GW has been treating you well :)) again, thank you!!

hi anthony ! wow, I feel so honored to hear that ! strangely enough, filming this allowed me to somehow be more open, reflective, and kind to myself about the entire process. when i was watching this footage while editing, i felt like i was consoling and rationalizing my thoughts to myself lol but i'm so glad you liked the video! Comments like yours encourage me to make more content and not to doubt myself so much. GW has been so much fun, thank you for asking !

from now onwards I will remember average grades mean 30APs, 1600SAT, 36ACT, 4/4GPA and mind blowing essays.
@nanako40182 жыл бұрын
Hey Sai! It doesn't have to be that extreme! As long as you have above average stats for your grade/school, you should be good! I made sure to emphasize in my video that my stats are not "average" nationwide, but I was in a very competitive high school and the schools I applied to were also very competitive. My stats are by no means average.

Hey, high school class of 2023 here! I'm also an Asian international student and I'm honestly scared of college rejections. Thank you for creating this video and calming my nerves down. Compared to other ppl who are overachievers and get extra disappointed when they didn't get into some top uni like Stanford, you have such a great growth mindset! I absolutely love your statement "I'm proud of myself because I applied". Thank you, once again! In 2 weeks, I'll find out whether I get into some of my 'dream schools'. I'm just commenting here to remind myself that, just like you, I should be proud of myself to have applied to my top dream schools too, whether or not I got accepted. :) Happy times at GWU!

I am very late to the game, but I wanted to say that you have incredible perspective, which is very rare these days. My daughter is a freshman in HS, and while I’m pulling for her to do well and be successful, I know that the college she goes to is just one step of her journey and doesn’t determine her value/worth. I want to make sure she knows that, as I know it’s so hard not to get swept up in all the expectations/stress of it. Congratulations to you and all of your accomplishments! More importantly, good for you on remembering who you are and standing proud. Would you have any tips for me as a parent (and for my daughter) going into these next 3-4 years of HS? Thanks so much!
@nanako401826 күн бұрын
Wow! Thank you so much for commenting! I personally think that the bar is rising each and every year and it would be dishonest if I said there was a sure-fire, guaranteed way to get into any university, at this point. But from my personal experience this is what I'd suggest: 1. Have good grades, take AP classes, and be involved in school! (Clubs, Honor Society, Sports, etc.) Try to be in leadership positions! 2. Colleges sometimes look for a "story" where your interests, your classes, extracurriculars, all match up to show a focus or a path, per se. 3. Apply to reaches, but make sure to apply to am fair share of safeties! 4. Most importantly--remember that there are many paths in life and no one path is perfect. If there are moments where you feel like you need a break, take that break. Work hard and play hard! Give yourself grace and just trust that where you are and where you end up are exactly where you are supposed to be. 5. (And for you super mom!) High school tends to be rough and this time is a time of discovery and I just ask for you to give her a safe space to be soft, unsure, and hormonal (lol)

This might be a good lesson for other asians watching. When asked what race you are, answer 'rather not say'. If it were up to me I'd write-in my answer, nunyabizniz. It's unfortunate that people get turned down for their race, what is it called again, when a person is judged against them for their race? Hmmmm it starts with an R. It's not fair.

I have a question, is it okay if you start applying to colleges in the spring of senior year? Am going to be a sophomore next year and I don't feel an were ready to write the college application letter.
@nanako40182 жыл бұрын
Hey Prina! I wrote all my applications during winter break of senior year (which was very last minute)! Most of them shouldn't be written during winter break because for most colleges, January is when the essays are due for regular decision. If you're doing early decision, you should write it the summer break going into senior year! You have plenty of time. Just focus on your extracurriculars, creating a narrative with the extracurriculars, and getting good grades.

@nanako40182 жыл бұрын
Hey SnEAkErHEaD! First off, being an international student is a pretty big plus for applying to American schools. Second, for the ACT, I just did a LOT of practice tests and tried to raise my scores on parts of the test I was really good at as opposed to bad at (like improving English, Reading, instead of math, which is not my strong suit.) Keep on trying to improve your GPA, but a 3.8 is great !!
