It's so crazy what kids have to do to get into schools these days. I went to Duke and graduated in 2000. I had a 1450 SAT score, 3.8 unweighted GPA, I played JV volleyball for two years, and was the editor in chief of the high school paper. I also did some volunteer work in Boston, but that was it. And I also got into Colombia, Penn, and Cornell!

Agreed. my sister was a finalist in USAMO, first place in USABO, president of three clubs at school (founder of one of them) plus two clubs outside of school, capable of tutoring pretty much every subject, straight A's all four years of high school, 18 AP classes, 18 AP exams, pretty much all 5's except for 4's in APUSH and AP Chem. And she still got rejected from Princeton. That's not even close to everything she did either. Absolutely insane

I think it’s not that surprising after reading their essays. Sure their extra curricular activities r insane but their essays r so mid. @@satvikseeram2109so these students have worked up their entire lives to build up their academic resumes and took part in ECs that 99% of highschool students can’t even imagine taking part in, but they’re being rejected because their admission essay was boring? how did they not already show their reliability from the ECs
@PolyglotMouse
@PolyglotMouse 3 ай бұрын
@@SelectedSpecimen For the first one, being test-optional drastically lowered her chances. Ivy leagues look at applications holistically, so if your SAT/ACT score isn't there, then they will put more weight on the other parts. For the second kid, his SAT was very good, but his essay was also boring. We also don't know how much financial aid he was looking for. A majority of foreign students who need full aid get rejected, even if they have 1600 SATs and won a Nobel Prize.

@@wamyy5 Unfortunately, it's insanely difficult to get college in America these days (specifically Princeton), my sister was a finalist in USAMO, first place in USABO, president of three clubs at school (founder of one of them) plus two clubs outside of school, capable of tutoring pretty much every subject, straight A's all four years of high school, 18 AP classes, 18 AP exams, pretty much all 5's except for 4's in APUSH and AP Chem, and more, and still got rejected from Princeton even though she got into the top three ranked colleges in America that year (Harvard, Stanford, and MIT)

@@clairejin1704do you have any other stats
@bd4947
@bd4947 6 күн бұрын
 that’s more stats than you’ll ever need- the lesson here is that stats like this don’t necessarily guarantee anything. In fact- they guarantee almost nothing once you get to a particular threshold of selectivity. The fundamental goal of all these activities is “what was your underlying motivation behind these activities and courses? What value did you gain from them? And how do they demonstrate some vision or objective towards the future?” Basically- ticking off boxes for the sake of “Statting up” is actually the number one way to get denied- because you’re following a template. You can’t match yourself to their template, so do things worthwhile and focus on what you can cobtrol- leaving high school knowing more about yourself, being smarter and having more confidence than when you arrived- and believing that you make your future- not the college you attend. If you focus on that, you’ll actually check off the boxes you’re trying your best to tik via stars. The difference is you’ll have filled in those boxes with substance rather Than stats. @9:40 when they mention admissions can sniff out BS around leadership and fundraising…it’s because it always sounds inauthentic when it is…and it always sounds formed by an uniformed adult or molded by an inauthentic template that is cliche and obvious. These readers aren’t geniuses- they’ve just seen thousands of apps and can sniff out a lack of self confidence or superficiality as a result. Remember this- the wisdom that success can only be measured in relation to previous versions of yourself will get you farther than thousands of dollars if expert advice in college admissions. And Princeton isn’t any less selective or rigid in admissions as compared to schools of similar selectivity. @clairejin1704 simply has yet to identify a more obvious reason for the admission anomalies they’re seeing in at Princeton across whatever sample set from which they are basing their conclusion. The fact that they think rankings 1-5 vs 6-10 will dictate admissibility for one of those schools vs another says all that needs to be said. The fact of the matter is that the US admissions process is a dating game more than a race- and the minutia matters more here than anywhere else I’ve seen by far. Look no further than the C7 of common data set to realize there’s intricacies that sway a college to see a student as a match whereas others don’t. I’ve had a Columbia admit get waitlisted at Barnard, an nyu admit get deferred from Catholic, an early Princeton Denied and admitted to UPenn, an early upenn denied and admitted to Princeton, and another to Harvard…. While I respect both of these individuals attempts at making a living/side hustle and offering valuable information on the college process, I hit every admissions outcome on the nose including the waitlist at Barnard. Getting into elite colleges doesn’t make you an expert at college advising or predicting college admissions.

For all incoming high school seniors/juniors, don't be too worried about your applications. I know there are some crazy applications out there, but tbh, most of the crazy stuff on the applications is either just exaggerated claims, like founded some small organization but making it sound huge, or just having a friend with a nonprofit organization and just ask em to give you a prestigious title within it. Of course, there are many amazing candidates out there, but the expectation to take so many AP classes, maintain a 4.0 GPA, and simultaneously found multiple nonprofits and win numerous awards is simply impossible.

Affirmative Actiom just didn't help Black people but White Women Hispanic people Native American and the disabled. This sounds like such a stressful system, I really feel for kids in the States. I feel so lucky having been brought up in The Netherlands, but I cannot imagine the stress of a minor having to apply to dozens of universities and 'build their cv' from such a young age, just to make sure they have a shot at a fulfilling career later in life. Kids should be kids for as long as possible, while being nudged into the right direction by their parents, the schools (which should all be public, no ivy feeder bullcrap), and the state.

Black students make about 7% of the total population in these Ivy League schools. Most of them major in non stem courses. The probability of these Asians getting denied is still high. There won't be a significant change in the acceptance rate. In fact, it'll be a big win for the smart black kids who'll take pride in their accomplishments without being labeled as beneficiaries of the system.

correct my conclusion if i'm wrong but we now know there's no rhyme or reason as to why one student gets chosen over another? meaning, there aren't any universal acceptance requirements and whether you get in or not depends solely on if the person who read your 'resume' likes it more than others? makes more sense to follow the mr. beast method (start a yt channel to build customer base, launch businesses, use revenue from both to engage in philanthropy). no degree necessary to achieve success and make a difference.

Hi! Yes there are a lot of unknown factors but there are still known things you can do to increase your chances. Most important thing is to be building your own human capital to be able to do things like build your own business later! However, I want to be cautious about recommending entrepreneurship and content creation because they are not for the faint of heart. You must be extremely dedicated, hard working, innovative, luck etc. Thus, education is a more stable way to a good future.

thanks for y'alls input.. i guess we'll just have to agree to disagree. 1. academic institutions are looking for something other than academics and they won't tell us what that is, and they're all different so unless you have inside knowledge you'll never know how to stand out in the eyes of your desired university 2. if you can get into an ivy league school you can probably start a yt channel, so does it really make more sense to spend 4 years and 100k on a degree when you could devote that to a channel/videos that will last like virtual monopoly property the rest of your life? IMHOP i don't think so. :^}

@@_xBrokenxDreamsx_ thanks for your perspective! I think you would be surprised at how it takes something drastically different inside you to get into an Ivy League vs start a YT channel. It is much much harder for an international student to get into an ivy league for example. Only 15% of applicants can be accepted and that is from all around the WORLD.

Calling us poor kids is just too much I mean most people in India are definitely not poor but we just don't have access to do anything extracurricular other than well chess or instruments or something like that. Even if we are volunteering for something our parents will burn us alive I guarantee you. (They would rather make us study more than do extra curricular)

Question why you want to get into an Ivy league. Honestly, there's very little reason unless you want to do specific courses that are significantly better (eg Harvard law, or engineering at MIT (I know it's not an Ivy league but just another example)). If you really need to, also ask yourself why you want to go right out of high school when a lot of poeple have better success going to smaller colleges like community college first then get into Ivy schools easily. My advice: just enjoy high school while you still can and don't worry about the stress of these top tier schools. As long as you get into a good school that's all that matters. Do you really want that debt on your shoulders? I don't live in America which is why I can sit here as a voice of reason. I know that if I did, I would be aspiring to get into one of these schools. But I sit here from someone where uni is solely based on grades, and there's no insane culture like the US. Stop. Breathe. And work out what's going to be the best for you.

Amy is cool, but didn't you do a video with "P" that you were rejected by stanford and later find put that precher P was not a student there neither? Also you mentioned about the Harvard's and the stanfords? Why mention that. I know a couple of student personally. They attend stanford and they are low income. So there not rich at all, but will be someday, also by the way there not Asian, like mentioned on other videos by you Amy. So it's not about how students live now, ita about all the effort work and details in life that are done. Just nit a given pr a list of have toos. So please just don't talk to make videos. Talk what is true. You attend Cal tech, that one very huge university. Alot of students only wished to attend cal tech and don't. So don't make life miserable and take advantage of the opportunities you have in hand. Apologies for any offense but it is offense when mentioned that a student comes from a rich family in order to attend stanford ot Harvard.

“average student” stop the clickbait. an average student is one that gets A’s and B’s, doesn’t get above a 1300 on the SAT, has only a few extracurriculars. profile 3 was average in EC’s, but their test scores made up for it. So they are not average. The “average students” KZbinrs like you are showing are above average. stop giving hope to students who are ACTUALLY average. i hate click-baiters. thought you were better than this, obviously not.

Hi! I appreciate you for taking the time to watch the video and share your thoughts. I spend a lot of time and effort on my thumbnails and titles (maybe too much haha) to ensure more students receive valuable insights, and we landed on this title for several reasons: - As explained in many of my past college admissions videos, typically to be considered for admission into top universities, students need to meet a (soft) threshold for stats such that they can handle the academics. Since there are significantly more students that meet those thresholds than students who can be admitted, then it comes down to ECs, essays, etc., hence in our assessment here, we're supposing she's "average." That is, to optimize for the students who are already working so hard and still feel they're not enough, the combination of this "average" student + showing the stellar students who didn't get into top schools can help assure students that if they're trying their best, they don't have to be so stressed and pressured. - Relating to the above and as mentioned in the video, we see the stress and extreme amounts of pressure on students nowadays in college admissions. If we could reveal the truth with real results to as many students as possible (increasing reach with a more clickable title), then more people would get the value within the video. This increases chances that we reach even that one kid who really needs to know that they are already amazing and one college decision doesn't define their potential. At least, I know I would've found a video like this extremely helpful. - Finally, the ambiguity of average is why we added the "?!" at the end since people's definition of average is subjective (Limmy's comment "I already know people are going to comment she's not average!"). Similar to point 1, people may consider an average student to have good stats and subpar ECs or to have subpar stats and good ECs. We want to show that as evident from the college admissions results, there is no definite "stellar" nor "average" in the eyes of the officers, not when there are so many other factors at play. Thus, even a student who thinks they're "average" (regardless of what that means to them) should still shoot their shot. Students with lesser stats can still get in if they have an outstanding story! P.S. I'm always open to title suggestions if you have any that can help meet the above goals! We were debating whether this title or one that was more negative (like about the first two students) would help reach more people. Titles are tough :)

Hate how she says “Didn’t get into good schools” as though where she the girl ends up just sucks. And not knowing about American. That she is this focused and narrow minded (which prob reflects everyone in her hs school class so isn’t her fault) makes me sad.
