I had trouble with it when I first played too, but it's one of those levels you just keep trying until you get through. I recommend getting air bubbles anytime you see them, you'll probably need it. for the boss, you can cheese it by jumping on one of the poles before they go all the way up and then jumping on Eggman from there. also yeah, agreeing with the other commenter, metropolis is a nightmare but it's very late game so you won't have to worry about it for a while. death egg (final boss) is also very difficult.
