The inspiration for this song came from the Super Soul Bros album "Fireball", which has been the music playing in my car for a few weeks now. If you're not familiar with them already, they're a video game cover band who perform funky renditions of video game music, similar to what I do! Their rendition of Aquatic Ruin Zone is one of my favorite tunes of theirs, and I decided I'd give it my own spin! I took inspiration from a track called "Caribe" by Michel Camilo, which was brought to my attention by one of my teachers at Berklee, and Hiromi Uehara's trio!
I haven't played Sonic 2 quite yet, as I just finished playing Breath of the Wild (amazing experience), and am currently finishing Sonic 1! Gotta say, not a fan of Sonic 1's controls so far, feels pretty sluggish to me. I've got high hopes for Sonic 2, though!
One video that helped me a lot in the production of this arrangement was jazztutorial's Salsa jazz piano video ( • How To Play Salsa Jazz... ). I was watching this video while waiting for a doctor's appointment, and I got the idea to use a piano montuno in this arrangement. It was a ton of fun to delve further into salsa piano!
I make jazz covers & remixes of video game music every other Saturday at 12:30 PM EST on my channel! My channel combines my loves of jazz and video game music, creating covers and remixes you'll enjoy.
Video edited by Sunder (he's awesome. Seriously.)

insaneintherainmusic The fact that Sonic can't swim was actually due to a mistake -- the creators thought hedgehogs couldn't swim, when in reality they love water.

SquigglyDigg That's actually wrong, in a way some hedgehogs actually hate water, like mine. He can't swim and he hates bath time so i guess they were right in a way. Sonic is just one of those hedgehogs that can't swim. (Like me... except im not a hedgehog)

Sorry, I know this is an old video, *and* I know you're taking a well-deserved break, but hopefully you don't mind me talking about how much your rendition of this has meant to me. I finished some really big exams a while ago after every exam that went well, I'd play this in my headphones as I walked home. When my mum was sick last year due to cancer and chemotherapy and I needed a break from it all, I'd listen to this and it'd reboot my spirits whenever I needed it to. When lockdown occurred and someone very dear to me had their mental health take a turn for the worst, I'd listen to this. Thank you. Thank you so much for making this beautiful music, as it has done nothing but soothe my soul over the trials of the last year. Regardless of how long your break is (in which I hope you're taking all the time you need), I just wanted to post this here. Just so that you knew how much your music has helped me :)

I was pleasantly surprised by this arrangement. I haven't seen you arrange something for a small jazz combo, and I am super impressed by how hard this grooved. The piano intro was not only super innovative and interesting to listen to, but also featured the best faces I've ever seen you make. The bass and tenor fit perfectly into what was established by the piano and stayed in the pocket the entire time. Solos were very creative and fit well with the backgrounds. 3:44 was a very appreciated reference to the file select music in The Legend of Zelda and I know you planned in advance to pull that out for your piano solo. I tried to find something to leave you for constructive criticism to get better like I always do, but I couldn't find a single thing that I felt you could have improved on. In short, I think this is the best arrangement/cover you have made to date, and I am very impressed with how far you have come these past few years. I am very pleased with how you have progressed as a musician and I hope you continue to do great things with music in your life!

Hey man! I occasionally had listened to a few of your covers before, but I'm really digging that one! I love how it makes you wanna dance, and I like how you always get back to that saxophone phrase, almost like a chorus ☺️ I'll definitely check what you mention in the video's description ! 👍👍

Really seems like you were having fun with this one! Aquatic Ruin Zone is one of my all time favorites, and the music has always been my favorite part...to me, it's a great example of what you can do to express a theme through music, even when you don't have many tracks to use, and have to keep it simple (in this case to work on the console). As for this piece, it felt like you were really letting your own style take over the music at certain points, especially during the solos, which I thought was awesome...it felt very free-flowing, but it always came back to the basic rhythm, almost like you were using the song as a template for you to experiment with your own ideas, rather than just covering the track with a solo in the middle. Kinda different from your usual stuff, but I liked this better! Hope this is a sign of things to come. The ebb and flow of the tempo and dynamics worked really well. I can definitely here the influence from Hiromi Uehara's work. Lots of creativity, I really liked it!

Yo! dude! this cover tho...Its so hype. the piano intro was gorgeous as FUCK. and the second every other part comes in, its just like! HNGGH, YESS! the part at 2:22, sounded so sick, i didnt know what to do with myself! then you did it again, but made it more hype with that half time feel for a sec. YO and the Zekda menu theme quote at 3:44..I see you big dog. You're making it impossible to have 1 favourite cover of yours. but god damn man, incredible work. Keep it up brother!
