Finally someone explains the reason I like having a 24-hr sub-dial - it helps with setting the date! :-)
@flip97gt3 жыл бұрын
The 24-hour sub dial makes it a true field watch. As long as you're in the northern hemisphere and it's daytime, the 24-hour sub dial is a very effective solar compass. As long as the hand on the 24-hour sub dial is pointed at the sun, the 12 o'clock on the main dial points north.
@spoonybard64 Жыл бұрын
Neat tip, thanks for sharing! Apparently you can do the same in the southern hemisphere as well but you do it backwards so you point the 12 o'clock on the main dial towards the sun and the hour hand on the 24 hour dial will point north.

Great review, and a really interesting, handsome piece... but as someone who has done a fair amount of spelunking, IMO tritium should have been used--at least for the hour and minute hands as well as the 12, 3, 6, and 9 markers, would certainly be worth a bump in price. Also, with all the banging around that goes on under ground ( at least when crawling through lava tubes), I'd want crown guards and I'd recess the crystal slightly, the the ability to attach a flip-up cover, though I suppose that could be a strap option. Oh, and I'd get that sucker as thin as possible due to the afore mentioned crawling around--having it catch on an outcrop could have unfortunate consequences, so sorry, but quartz.
@barrettwbenton3 жыл бұрын
Agreed. Also, I'd want that 24H subdial hand lumed as well (which is the case with my Seiko 5 Sports Spacewalk). Tritium tubes, even better.

Yeaah tritium. What watches do spelunkers actually use? I've never done it but my instinct says I would pick a square G-shock, one of those with the automatic electroluminescent backlight that turns on when you tilt the watch. Always perfectly legible without having to use two hands to press a light button, also light, relatively thin and the closest a watch gets to being indestructible.
@terryloh85833 жыл бұрын
@@AleksiJoensuu Well, I have done a fair bit of spelunking. And I mostly agree with you. A 5600 is tougher, and more accurate. I've mainly gone through lava tubes, which are quite rough, so wearing gloves is a thing, and when not wearing gloves, your hands (and most every other part of you) can get really grimy. Also, I prefer a hand-held flashlight over a headlamp (which I also ALWAYS take with me). So finding the light button can be easier said than done. All that said, if your life depends on knowing exactly what time it is at any particular moment... I don't do that kind of caving. Too much of a chicken.

Hi Dave. Great review. Can't sleep so you're keeping me company. I'd never heard of spelunking but in any case I can't see any caver or troglodyte actually wearing one of these. Maybe Bilbo or one of the Dwarves. There's a hint of fashionable-ness about it rather than being totally utilitarian. You'd need something really industrial. It had a ring of the Vario to it ; too pretty for the trench. That white dial though makes it a really lovely watch for just the the thought of crunching through snow. 24 hour dials on the right watch are extremely useful. I'm still considering the Vostok and doubt I'd ever need that. Thank you. Goodnight from old geezer, England. 🙋🏽♂️⌚

I pretty much never a 24hr sub dial. That's why I sort of don't like it when most mecha-quartz chronographs use the version with the 24hr sub as it's pretty useless for me. Prefer the mecha-quartz that doesn't have the 24hr sub and uses another complication for the chronograph function.. I forget the movement ref#, but it's out there and much less commonly used. Anyways, I agree, the most useful use for a 24hr sub is to quickly reference am/pm so u know if u are in the danger zone for setting date or not. Otherwise without one, I'd cycle through the hours to check when I actually cross 12am before attempting to set the date.

Only real downer and deal killer is the use if ab 8000 series Miyota, I'd me more interested, have two regular ventures which use an NH35 movement, probably why the case is 12mm. If they used a 9000 series I'd be far more interested. Boldr makes a great for the money watch, have two Expeditions which use Selita. All of them are well made. A single pass NAT0 would be what I used if I was to get it. I do like the subdial great idea. Thanks for the review.

Nice video Dave. And I'm jealous of that Strap Mill band. Hmm. That's a good colour combination, and I really like the textured dial. They're really purposeful.

I served on a nuclear submarine, and often we were submerged for weeks. That would seem to be an ideal situation for using a 24-hour sub-dial. But we operated on GMT regardless of our actual location, so that sub-dial would be "wrong" most of the time in daylight and darkness terms. It would be unnecessary for normal 24-hour time as the boat's routine makes it impossible to confuse AM for PM and vice-versa.

Excellent review, but with experience of watches with diashield hardened titanium cases, used in my two activities, scuba diving and mountaineering, titanium is NOT the best of materials. Though it's tough, it's not scratch proof even with a protective coating, and mine look pretty bad after just a few uses. Hit an ocean bottom rock, or a dead coral, a quartz stone when climbing, it will scratch very quickly where brushed stainless steel will be unmarked. Titanium is only good for a desk watch. The 24 hr complication would definitely be good for caving. I've only did a little bit in New Zealand, but a G-Shock is the go to watch for spelunkers. And this will definitely get scratched up in caves.

I find 24 hour and day/night complications to be some of the least useful features a watch can have. Make it a 24 hour movement if you really want this information. Now _that's_ a cool feature. If Boldr made a ~10mm titanium field watch with a date then I'd be all in. Have the first gen quartz and it's just OK: lume is terrible (even for a field watch), coarse brushing on the very flat, undifferentiated hands is somewhat hard to read, registration on the ticks is consistently off. Unless I was dead set on a titanium watch, I'd just get one of the (new) Seiko 5 field watches instead of the current Boldr Venture.

24-hour dials are useful in situations where you still need to keep standard time but have no external daylight reference (caves, submarines) or where your daylight reference is no longer in sync with a 24 hour period (low earth orbit). In the latter case, Mercury program Astronaut had his Breitling Navitimer modified to use a 24-hour dial. Where you can see the sky, a 12 hour dial is fine.
