These videos are actually pointless as much is misconstrued or ignored, cherry picking what seems to make his case. The maker of this video is a big fan of James White. James White debated Trent Horn... in which he failed so badly that afterwards he had to make another video explaining how to "properly decide who won the debate". Pretty cringe. I personally do not know who is right... but I have learned to trust no one source such as this video. Every point in this video will have at least one counter point equally convincing.

@@culpepper7665 My friend, if it is unwise to trust 'one source such as this video', which you've labeled an example of pointlessness and cherry-picking (without evidence), why do you get to take 'one source' at face value in the Horn Vs. That is so sad that you never read the Bible outside of Mass. You were wrongly catechized. The Church has always encouraged people to read the Bible every day. In fact, Catholic priests are required, at minimum, to read Scripture at least 5 times a day.

OK so here is a question though. How liturgical are protestants allowed to get? Like OK no veneration of icons, got it, but could a protestant church Cover its walls in frescos Biblical figures and post biblical Saints? Can it use incense and build churches with beautiful ornate architecture? I ask this as an Armenian because as much as I might be considering Protestantism, I wouldn't want to practice worship in a generic Apple pie American fashion. I think every country should practice worship in a manner that is natural to their culture, so long as it is not violation of scripture. There is beauty in liturgy and to just dismiss it offhand as emotionalism is unfair.
@ancientpathstv
@ancientpathstv Ай бұрын
Americans have sometimes overreacted and swung the pendulum to the opposite extreme. Historic Protestants didn't believe we should renounce tradition or beauty, but they understood extrabiblical tradition is fallible and our hearts are idol factories. Hezekiah had to destroy the brazen serpent made by Moses, because Israel had made it an idol. They would never have agreed with a praise band or pastor in "skinny jeans," nor would they think there was virtue in ugly architecture. They modeled their liturgies after those of the early church. Their goal was to focus on Christ in His glory. I encourage you to watch our videos critiquing Eastern Orthodoxy and check out www.reformationtoday.org

@@ancientpathstv I have actually seen your video on Eastern Orthodoxy. I am currently in the process of checking the arguments point by point as I myself have a library of the church fathers. I think you do make some fair arguments, especially in regards to some of the more bombastic claims made by EOs, but I don't agree with everything. For example, I disagree with what appears to be your suspicion of mysticism and mystical theology. Mysticism has been part of the very bones of Christianity since the time of Christ himself and varying degrees of asceticism have also been part of the Christian experience. You see this in the writings of St. Paul which are deeply rooted in the mystical theology of Second Temple Judaism. Then this tradition is simply inherited by the desert fathers. I mean the very hermeneutical method the authors of the New Testament used to interpret the Old Testament is inherently mystical in nature because it reveals the mysteries that are not obviously apparent in the plane text. It is essentially a Christian form of midrash. So I would argue that it is disingenuous to fault the church fathers for seeing Mary as the new Eve or the new ark of the covenant, or seeing Joseph in the Old Testament as a type of Jesus, when they are simply using the same hermeneutical method the New Testament uses. There is nothing in scripture that says we have to limit ourselves to the typological examples explicitly stated in the New Testament. That said, I think there is godly mysticism and demonic mysticism. Demonic mysticism revolves around the covetous pursuit of hidden or forbidden knowledge. It is inherently secretive, clandestine and Full of itself. Proper mysticism weights on the Holy Spirit and is inherently submissive to God. I also somewhat disagree with your take on asceticism. However, I do agree with you when you say that some church fathers did take things too far in subordinating married life to asceticism and monasticism. I don't think it's good to be on either extreme of the spectrum. And where asceticism is practiced, I would agree that it shouldn't be to the point of tormenting and causing pain to the body. I think the Benedictine reforms were necessary in this regard. The other thing I disagree with is the assertion that believing in the perpetual virginity of Mary is necessarily tied to asceticism or a distain for healthy marital sex. Personally I do believe in her perpetual virginity, but primarily because I believe she was set aside for the purpose of being the mother of God. While marital sex is good and godly, we do see a separation between it and that which is set aside for God alone. Even those who do not believe she remained a virgin after the birth of our Lord will at least acknowledge that for the time she was pregnant with him, she did not participate in marital sex. While sex is good and godly when it is done within the confines of marriage, it is not holy. It is profane, profane in the more mundane usage of that word. This is why we don't have sex in church. This is why the God of Israel did not have Temple prostitutes. Still, I will agree that perhaps Mary's perpetual virginity should be a matter of personal pius opinion and not dogmatized. Finally, I disagree when it comes to the issue of the intercession of the Saints. While again I might agree that some people might go a little too far in certain cultural practices, we know through the Bible that the Saints and angels are praying for us here on earth. So it's not that big of a jump to actively ask them to do so in particular instances. This doesn't mean we aren't praying directly to God. Eastern Christians have been praying directly to God since the beginnings of the church. This isn't a case of either or. I know you probably heard this many times before, but for me it's just simple and intuitive. I ask for the intercession of the Saints just as I ask for the intercession of my friends and neighbors. And that is all I do. I am very attached to my patron saint and I believe he protects me and intercedes for me. Again this is not at the expense of God. We see throughout holy scripture that God uses people as his instruments to carry out his will. Why does God need armies of angels? Why does he need apostles to spread his gospel? Clearly he doesn't. But he loves to involve his creatures in his Holy work. So that is exactly how I see the Saints. They basically do the same things that the angels do, and you see several hints throughout scripture that glorified humans become part of the heavenly host. So if angels guard and protect humans here on earth, it seems only natural to me that glorified human saints do the same. If angels pray and intercede on behalf of humans, it's only natural that glorified human saints do the same. So I guess if I were to be a protestant, I would be a pretty borderline protestant. I can agree to a very precise understanding of sola scriptura which recognizes the Bible as the only infallible Authority and source of doctrine and morals, but my interpretation of the Bible would be heavily influenced by the church fathers, the councils and historical research and context. That last part is especially true as of late as I have been doing a lot of research into Second Temple Judaism and the ancient near eastern context of the Bible.

@@ancientpathstv Ah and this right here is why even as a Protestant, I could never be a Calvinist, although I do see Calvinism as a necessary counterbalance to those Christians who cringe at Biblical passages that act as a mirror to their own perverse and fallen hearts. Whenever I find that a person is too far in one extreme, I usually like to emphasize the opposite Extreme in order to hopefully bring them back to center. However, I fundamentally disagree with the Calvinist understanding of free will and fallen human nature. I agree with you on depravity, but disagree with you on total. I would argue that your doctrine of complete and total depravity is not in continuity with either the Jewish or early Christian tradition. The heart is corrupt and deceitful, but this is all the more reason why it must be submitted to God. Yes, the Bible does say that the heart of man is inclined towards wickedness, and yes in some places it even says that our thoughts are all wickedness all the time. Still, this must be balanced out by those passages that give examples of people whose hearts do seem to be inclined towards God. The fundamental disagreement between us is the question of whether the free will of man after the fall is completely and irredeemably corrupt so that it only seeks after the evil, or if it still bears the image of God and has the ability to recognize and accept the grace of God. I would argue the numerous figures in the Old and New Testament who are specifically referred to as righteous or good people are a counter to the doctrine of total depravity. It wouldn't call those people righteous if they weren't. At best, it would say simply that they were obedient to God or something along those lines. Some people might ask that if there were righteous people, then what is the point of Christ and His salvation? But I think this misunderstands what righteousness is. Righteousness is not inherent goodness that does not require salvation; it is simply having a heart that is inclined towards the good, and God is the ultimate good. Furthermore, we see from human actions every day both the corrupting influence of the fall, but also the seed of righteousness that is the image of God within us. You have soldiers in the trenches who jump on a grenade out of love for their brothers in arms. In that moment, they don't weigh out the pros and cons; all they can think about is protecting those they love. Humans also have at least a basic understanding of fairness and justice. True, our corrupt hearts do often pervert justice, as we can see with the modern-day cult of social justice in much of the western world, but they aren't automatically inclined towards that particular perversion of justice; it needs to be beaten into them through college indoctrination. Look, I will agree with the position that because the imago Dei is corrupted by the fall, nothing we do is ever truly good from the perspective of God. It's always distorted by at least a little bit of evil. This is where I agree with you. Where I disagree is the assertion that because our righteousness is imperfect, everything we do is automatically displeasing to God. Again, in scripture we see numerous instances where such and such a person is pleasing to God. And it's not because they had perfect righteousness, but it's because God saw the seed of righteousness within them that He could cultivate and grow. The love of God is transformative and purifying. It's the love that gradually turned seriously flawed people like Abraham and Jacob into the righteous fathers of nations. I feel like it's easy for Christians to fall into one of the two extremes when it comes to human nature. Either they take the warm and fuzzy view that the fall wasn't really that serious and that human beings are still inherently good, or they take the view that we are just complete shit with no redeeming qualities. I think the most sober position to take is one that avoids these two extremes. I don't take the fall lightly at all. Whenever I need a reminder of the depths to which our nature has fallen, I need only look at things like the Holocaust, the Cambodian genocide, or even the genocide of my own people. I see the ugly face of fallen humanity staring right back at me in those events and it makes me shudder. And I recognize those same tendencies within my own heart. At the same time, during those same dark chapters in human history, there were men and women who risked and often gave their lives to protect those who were persecuted and give comfort to the orphans and the widows. Those are the people who I would argue are pleasing to God. That is the imago Dei at work in them. Still, I will agree that all our righteousness is as filthy rags before God. But of course it is. There is no way that any finite creature could ever through his own will be perfect before an infinite, all-good and all-holy God. Compared to the goodness of God, the most saintly person is the most grievous of sinners. And you know what? Even those Christian monks and mystics knew this. They said it all their lives. They always recognized that any goodness they had comes from God alone. Far from being in a constant state of happy crappy euphoria, they were constantly and poignantly reminded of their own sinfulness. You see this when you read the writings of the Desert Fathers and the later Eastern and Western monks and hermits. King David is the perfect model of repentance, a beautiful example of a broken and contrite heart, pouring out his soul before God and drenching his bed with tears. When I read the stories and the writings of those monks and hermits, that is exactly what I see. The mystical experience of God is what some Eastern monks call "joyful sorrow." It is a simultaneous unfathomable joy at beholding the glory of God before them while at the same time, an unfathomable sorrow at seeing their sinful nature reflected back at them when in His presence. They are in awe of His infinite perfection, and this forces them to see their filthy rags. So no, I would disagree with the assertion that mysticism necessarily entails going off of your own feelings or what feels good. That might be true for the mysticism or mystical theology of the pagans, grounded as it is in "self-knowledge" and "self-realization," but not so for the mysticism of the Bible and of the many godly men and women throughout Christian history. A proper Christian mysticism does not reject a piety rooted in God's word but deepens our understanding of His transformative power and reminds us of the constant need for repentance and seeking His face.

Instead of making baseless assertions, you need to deal with the evidence. In Acts 20, Paul called the Ephesian elders (presbuteroi) to Miletus and told them to guard the flock over which God had made them overseers (episkopoi). The terms for elder and bishop are repeatedly used interchangeably in Scripture and the early church fathers. Stay Catholic and don't listen to this heretic. He has no brothers and sisters, he is not even Christian. He is someone desperate to destroy Christianity. He trashes in his videos all Christian denominations. From an orthodox Christian, God bless. ✝️

Wrong ! If you’re Catholic that means nothing to you being my brother . The Bible that you never read - we are called out all over the place to judge False teachers . Ephesians 4:14. For an example or Roman’s 16: 17-18. Read it ! Your first pope . 2 verse 1-2. Read it . My brother is a redeemed soul by Faith in Jesus Christ plus nothing . Roman’s 4:5. 2 Corinthians 5 verse 21. You are not my brother .

To - Ancient I'm in Miami, Florida. Yes, you do that. Point me to some. You still are not NAMING the denomination. Oh, I forgot. The one you point to isn't a denomination. It's the True Church.

Please don't set a standard for a true church to which even your own can't live up. Rome has its divisions: Latin Rite, Byzantine Rite, Maronite, and a number of others, as well. Within those, you have Father James Martin, promoting homosexuality, and Mel Gibson, promoting the Latin Mass. The only real unity is they acknowledge the pope as the head of the church. As shown in this video, his is not the biblical faith, nor the historic faith of the church. There are faithful denominations. We are part of one. I asked, because, some are better represented in some areas than others. A solid church in your area is Pinelands Presbyterian Church (10201 Bahia Drive Cutler Bay, FL 33189).

@@danib712 you ignore the Orthodox Christian belief of 1500 years, instead relying on the belief of a gluttonous, arrogant heretic. Peter is the rock and has always been. Jesus didn't speak Greek, he spoke Aramaic. He named Simon Kephas, not Petros.

@@ancientpathstv Francis is just one pope in a line of many, he may not represent the traditional faith, but his office does. No Christian for 1500 years, and no real Christian for 2000, has not recognized the bishop of Rome, the See of Peter, as the shepard of the flock, the one Jesus chose to "feed my sheep". Without the unity the of the papal office we would eventually end up like protestants, leaving one Church to start another, believing in all kinds of heresies.

@Martin Ramsbottom yes I am Catholic. 1 Corinthians 4:3 But to me it is a very small thing to be judged by you, or by man's day; but neither do I judge my own self 4For I am not conscious to myself of any thing, yet am I not hereby justified; but he that judgeth me, is the Lord If were a bible Christian you would know we are not to judge ourselves Justified or Saved. Has my life been changed? Well yes but slowly. For some getting Grace is like being hit by a lightning bolt but for others it's a slow process.

If men are dead in their trespasses and cannot choose God unless they are born again of the Spirit, what good does it do to implore people to choose the true God of the bible? If they are born again, will they not choose? If they are not born again, isn't it futile to ask them to choose? I'm confused...
