This makes so much sense. Im a high handicap golfer, 6-4 tall, long arms. Im left handed but golf righty. So very lead shoulder dominant already. I have a short backswing, but generate tons of speed and distance and have been struggling to understand why my golf buddies are so much shorter on the course. I played with an old timer the other day, and when our round was over he gave me some encouragement. He said that he was watching my game and said i had very quick hands, and that he would hate to get into a barfight with me, hahaha. He said if i can get more consistent and straiten out my ball flight, that i could be a very good golfer. Watching this lesson cleared up a lot for me, and gave me some insight into how i can improve upon this. Thanks!

Russell, thank you for this! Your ability to get yous ideas across by just getting it out first, that there are many ways to swing the golf club. And no matter how you do it you are going to learn for this video. It's awesome. It quiets all the social media "yeah but". And once you quiet that noise what left is the fruitfull lesson that every golfer can learn from. I believe you the best teacher on KZbin. My big takeaway from this video is. Impliment the change in a short swing, so I can feel it. Then take that feeling to a full swing. I am often not successful so I go back to the short swing and refine the feeling in some way. Then back to the full swing. Then back to the short swing.....at some point I make the break through and that feeling sticks. What a great game!!

Russell, I'm seven weeks into learning the game and you really pulled so much value together in just 6 minutes. Great job clarifying the various swing mechanics of the release on the downswing , the rotation using the legs, and the lead shoulder's role in the follow through and finish. Brilliant. Efficiency (i.e., effortlessness) in a swing is all about knowing how to use the physics of gravity and acceleration to do the work. The best analogy to an efficient golf swing is chopping a V in a horizontal log with a heavy axe. A wide arc is used to swing the axe overhead then gravity and circular momentum around the hands is allowed to accelerate it down. The lumberjack simply needs to grip the handle in a way that allows the axe to whip around the hands. Harry Frankenberg (aka Count Yogi) realized the same cause and effect could be used in a golf swing AND that the wrists could be used in a way that locked them up just as the compressed ball was ready to release off the face. Arrange the club face in the grip so it is facing the target when the club head whips down around the hands and they lock and you get very powerful dead straight shots far more consistently than the conventional swing, which also locks up the wrists but only after impact and release of the ball. Biomechanically the trigger action for locking up the wrist is allowing the club force to pull both wrists thumb down into maxed out ulnar deviation as club head meets ball, not several feet after impact in the finish. Frankenberg learned to do that, so did Hogan and Moe Norman which is why they were all legendary ball strikers renowned for hitting consistently straight and for a distinctly different sound in their ball striking. That difference is sound is the result of how a compressed golf ball decompresses more rapidly off the face of the club when the wrists locking momentarily slow it down. The physics is the same as an unbelted car passenger going through the windscreen in a car crash. I discovered how to do it by studying and then duplicating the swings of Hogan, Frankenberg and Norman. The release of radial deviation lag created when the club force cocks the wrists in the backswing to fully maxed out ulnar deviation is the same biomechanics which allow the acceleration of the tip of a leather bull whip past the sound barrier (what creates the crack). That same action was used by all three of those golfers to accelerate their club heads down to the ball. Simple, effortless, repeatable with three entirely different swing styles but the same efficient use of the physics of mass and momentum.
@jamesflynn42692 жыл бұрын
Fantastic commentary! Does one accomplish this action statically via the gripping of the club initially, or dynamically during the swing? I would imagine it would have to be dynamically during the course of the swing because each of the three golfers you mentioned utilized a different method to grip the golf club. Is there a video that demonstrates your excellent diagnosis? Your description makes so much sense to me. Thank you. I would love to correspond or discuss this more with you if you would be so inclined. ~ Jimmy
@TeddyCavachon2 жыл бұрын
@@jamesflynn4269 Thanks for the comment. The free “cracking the whip” action is the result of the grip established at address allows the wrist to move. The hidden genius of the Vardon and interlaced style of that grip Nicklaus (and I use due to short fingers) allows the rapid change from maxed-out radial to maxed-out ulnar deviation and locking of the wrists just as the compressed ball is ready to fly off the face. The locking of the wrists is like a car slamming on its brakes with the ball flying off the face like a unbelted passenger with more acceleration and velocity that in the conventional swing where the ball is just picked up and released with continuous sweeping action. Try this when gripping your club. Start with it vertical in the air, elbows bent, with just your lead (left) hand holding it. Next place your right hand on it with thumb pad of trail (right) hand up high over the thumb of the lead hand. Now bend forward at the hips and allow the weight and leverage of the club to pull your arms straight BUT DO NOT GROUND THE CLUB YET OR RELAX YOUR GRIP! As your arms are pulled straight you will see and feel the forearms counter-rotate inward and feel the pad of your right thumb press more tightly on the left allowing you to relax the tension in your fingers without any loss of control. That’s due to how separate nerve branches control thumb/index/ring finger and third and little finger. The counter-tension in the arms isn’t due to contraction, just stretching and twisting like torsion bars and it really firms up the shoulder / hand triangle to the point it becomes nearly impossible to swing the club back independently with the arms. You much use shoulders or better just the hips to move everything away from the ball in ‘one piece’. Letting the club hang and freely swing into towards your body before grounding will allow you to find ideal static balance using the counter-weight of the club out past your feet to allow you to balance your body back on your heels, which during the swing will prevent swing force from pulling hands and body towards ball more than at address. While it is hanging an inch or so above the ground just rock you hips laterally an inch or so to get the club moving and observe how it moves back in a shallow arc and feels in perfect balance. Starting in balance like that is the key to finishing in balance. When you get the grip and takeaway right the rest just seems to happen automatically because it is the force generated in the takeaway which powers the club whipping up around the hands and pulling the arms up and shoulders the rest of the way around until the are 90° to target line and club shaft is above the heels parallel with it and in the ideal position to set -up the downswing which is powered by the unwinding if legs and core created effortlessly in the backswing. Gravity does the work on way down and the golfer only needs to control the path by keeping the trail arm tucked into body (with side bend action) so club head lags behind hands and whips around the hands to the ball. If you check my channel I’ve got many videos I’ve made to share my observations and musing about the biomechanics and physics of the swing and how to use them efficiently.

So I used to be a bad flipper and improved it the last 2 years but I still hit the ball too high where I lose distance. I’ve been working again on “holding” my wrist angle and turning more which has brought my ball flight way down but feels very unnatural and feels so hard to maintain that lag especially on shorter shots. Should I not be actively trying to hold the wrist angle till impact but if I don’t I go back to a high ball flight and losing 10-15 yards on irons and 15-20 on driver? One more thing is when I hold that angle and lag with driver especially, the strike feels amazing like how it should feel and I rarely feel that when not trying to hold the lag.

Hi Russel at 74 my one and only downswing thought to abruptly turning the knuckles of my hands clockwise at the top of my downswing just as my body is uncoiling turning counterclockwise. Ground forces naturally takes place and now after 40 years my swing has never been more easier and accurate. With a little practice of feeling the weight of the head of your club twirling at the top of your swing first simply twirl the club full circle clockwise in front of your body with the power of the knuckles of both your hands working altogether. Believe me any one can learn to do this amazing secret that Jack Nicklaus did starting at the top of his downswing. Cheers

@OnTheSnap13 жыл бұрын
Is this why any left arm Break down through impact is such a massive clubhead speed killer? It basically prevents the shoulder from releasing the club hard because the kinetic chain is broken. Slight elbow bend through impact is something I struggle with. All videos and cures, personal coaches have failed for me.
@cscoetzee3 жыл бұрын
Slight right elbow bend is what you should be looking for, as I understand it. Left arm is straight (but not stiff) at impact. Together with left shoulder movement as shown in this video, it whips the clubhead through impact.

Possibly there are other reasons for this but I would suggest for amateur golfers this would bean issue
